We've recently moved into a (dilapidated!) house and I need to take meter readings. Anyone have a clue??

Can someone help me read this meter?!

You guys were so helpful last time, I wonder if you could help me again! I've tried to do it myself, but my bill has come out about £100 more than normal 🫣

Can someone help me read this meter?!

@StainlessSeal I make it 34628, is that what you thought?

StainlessSeal · 18/11/2024 12:31

Ah, yes! Gosh, I have no idea how we've spent £347.53 in electricity in a month!

Agree 34628. Haven’t seen one of those old meters since I was a kid and used to let the man in to read the meter, when I was on my own!!! Can you imagine a little kid now letting a strange man in the house <faints>

That’s expensive OP <faints again>

Agree 34628

I can't get over why it's so high! Our heating is gas!

Have you got a water tank in a cupboard? Sometimes those have an electric switch that can be used to heat the water if your boiler breaks down, but sometimes they get accidentally left on and it uses electric instead of gas constantly.

Assuming you're not running a hot tub or anything like that.

You can do creep a test by turning everything you're aware of off for an hour and see how much the last dial or two have moved in that time.

I'd see about getting that meter replaced asap too. They can lose accuracy and that one is well to of certification.

@doodleschnoodle and yes, we are waiting for Octopus to come and update it!

According to those readings you've used 1461 units from the 7th Oct to 18th Nov - that's over 35 units a day!!

Has someone got a heater (or 2?!) plugged in somewhere? In a garage or something?!

Your meter must be visibly moving on the red circle? I'd switch everything off until it stops then switch everything back on one at a time. If you've a modern consumer unit where you can switch individual circuits off then that would make it easier to isolate.

RememberedBills · 18/11/2024 13:14

Do you have any plans to get the meter replaced? You might be able to get a smart meter for free.

Also if l the consumer unit is very old, it won’t offer RCD protection so there’s more risk of an electrical fire.
