Can a 17 week boy gender scan be wrong?

Mama2bex · 06/10/2024 18:33

I had a gender scan yesterday which in one image, clearly shows boy parts. However, everything prior was pointing to girl, 2 nub readings, all the wives tales and a medium reading which I know could all be false but I can’t shake the feeling it might be a girl. I’ve included both my 13 week scan and a couple of the gender scans below. Any thoughts if the gender scan could be wrong. It was 17+2 by NHS dates and 16+6 by my dates?

I think that's a boy, ask them to confirm the sex at your 20 weeks scan to be sure if you're not totally convinced

Thank you, it’s definitely looking like that. I will ask them to check for sure and see what they say!

Wives tails and mediums cannot predict the sex of the baby, they just make a 50/50 guess. Scan can be wrong but it's far more accurate and that looks like a boy, hopefully they will check again for you at the 20 week scan

My first words to my DD were "Fuck me you're a girl". Yes they can and do get it wrong.

Thank you … it definitely looks like a boy and maybe I just need to accept it. I think I spent the last 17 weeks believing it was a girl but as long as it’s healthy, that’s all that matters x

Thank you. Did you get told you were having a boy and did the scan look similar?

Her umbilical cord was mistakenly identified as a penis.

You can't have even known you were pregnant 17 weeks ago. Let alone know the babies sex. You'd have only been able to see the nub in the past few weeks (and what is a "nub reading?")

Why were you engaging in medium readings?

I hope you aren't disappointed? You give the sense of wanting the scan to be wrong.

Okay, correction, since I got my positive test as my symptoms were so different this time around.

The medium reading was before I was pregnant but told me it was a girl and was only reminded a couple of months back.

Baby is healthy and that is all that matters. I just don’t want to do a reveal and it be wrong. I already have a little boy so know how amazing they are. It’s just an instinct I can’t shake, nothing more.

Go and get a 3d scan then. But that's a pair of testicles op and a penis by the look of it.

Crunchymum · 06/10/2024 18:56

Well as others say, get it confirmed at your anomaly scan in a few weeks.

FWIW I know a midwife who was told baby was a girl (several scans 16, 17, 18 weeks due to unexplained bleeding) but 20 week scan baby was a boy.

Midwife friend did say the consultant was more concerned with the health of the baby and the cause of bleeding but she was definitely told twice (two of her three scans in fetal medicine unit, by same consultant) that baby was a girl.

CatchingBabies · 06/10/2024 18:58

Nub theory, old wives tales and a medium are not accurate. An ultrasound is. Congratulations on your boy.

@Mama2bex
I know what you mean, I went with my gut feeling in my first and second pregnancies and was right both times.
This time I've no gut feeling and am so excited to have a wee surprise. Hoping so much it's a healthy wee surprise

I will definitely get it reconfirmed. This was more of a ask to know if I should trust my gut even though it clearly could be wrong 😂

I know incorrect scans happen though as happed with your friend so wanted to get thoughts x

It’s exactly this. My gut usually serves me so well but it might not be the case with this one.

fingers crossed for your healthy baby x

My pregnancy with DD2 felt so different from DD1 I was sure she must be a boy. They couldn't tell either way at the scan, so I didn't know until she was born.

The only 100% foolproof way is DNA, but scans can be pretty clear, and IME they only say if the are 99%, if not 100% certain.

MissyPants · 06/10/2024 19:15

You can't prioritise nonsense medium readings and old wives tales over science.
The scan is scientific evidence showing human biology, and a professional identifying that!
Where's the concrete scientific evidence for a medium? There isn't any. I'm not saying 100% that mediums don't exist, there is just a lack of evidence to support it, therefore it must be doubted. It's far more likely to be hot and cold readings, and therefore are just good (sometimes) at what they claim to do.
Yes sex scans can sometimes be wrong, but they are more likely to be right!

Thank you, I’m aware that it could all have been rubbish and looks like it was. I was never taking that as gospel. My instinct was just telling me different but a healthy baby boy is absolutely fine with me :)

You’re asking what’s most reliable - old wives tales/medium or a scan? Really?!

MissyPants · 06/10/2024 19:38

It's just about probability, and what is more likely really.
It's absolutely fine to feel a little disappointed if you do, you're allowed to, we all have preferences and the sex of our babies is no different.
I was a little disappointed with the sex of my baby at the 20 week scan, and that's fine, but now baby is here I'm not.
Huge congratulations on your pregnancy!

MsCactus · 06/10/2024 19:38

It really looks like a boy to me - looks nothing like my DD gender scan photo. However why not pay for a blood test to determine the gender? They identify XX or XY and are more accurate. Scans can be wrong - but in all likelihood your baby is a boy

Muthaofcats · 06/10/2024 19:39

Congrats on your baby boy!

Pandasnacks · 06/10/2024 19:40

Your gut can't tell the sex of the baby though OP, your gut is telling you that you WANT a girl, and that's absolutely fine, you already know you will love your son but wanting one of each is not bad.

Elliebox · 06/10/2024 19:40

Mediums and “nub readings” are theory. Go with the actual evidence as the sonography is unlikely to be wrong at this stage

Ellsx6 · 06/10/2024 19:41

Looks exactly like my boys 12 week nub and potty shot that's definitely a boy! We've had ours confirmed 3 times by 3 different people so I have no doubt
