I choose to not eat halal meat. I avoid it where possible. I’m sure I may have eaten it unknowingly, however it’s been a very long time since I had an Indian Takeaway, and I won’t eat at Popeyes or KFC etc.
Part of my reason comes from personal choice. Just as Muslims can choose to avoid non-halal meat, so do I have the right to choice, based off my beliefs (as a Catholic I don't want my food blessed by another religion) and also simply my personal preference.
I completely respect the Muslim religion and I would never expect a Muslim to eat something they were not comfortable with. I completely respect their right to eat halal. In return, I ask for equal respect.
Expecting people of other cultures, backgrounds or religions, or no religion at all, to just be ok with eating halal meat is not acceptable to me. People seem to think that the majority need to be accommodating, but it’s not about that. True diversity and equality is about mutual respect. One groups practices and beliefs should not be accommodated at the expense of another groups, even if you don’t believe in the validity of their beliefs, or even if you think you’re just trying to be nice and tolerant.
So often when I choose not to eat halal, it’s also out of defiance, as a means to push back against people who would prioritise one groups needs over another. I respect Muslims rights to eat in accordance to their beliefs. I expect the same respect in return.
