I haven't ever really thought about it. I'm afraid I don't know the processes involved

Usually either a boltgun to the head or a cut to sever major blood vessels. Alternatively, electrocution or gassing. All animal slaughter is unpleasant for the animals. There are different opinions on the least inhumane methods available.

PonyPatter44 · 05/10/2024 21:55

@Huntcole you're wrong, and I don't really know what you mean by 'slice and dice'. Do you think that halal slaughter means that the animal is butchered before its dead? I don't even know how that would work. There are some specialist halal abbatoirs, but it's very unlikely that you'd have access to the meat from those places unless you were buying from specialist butchers.

As someone mentioned upthread, non-halal methods don't exactly involve animals being licked to death by kittens.

Sethera · 05/10/2024 22:04

Most of the takeaway curries, pizzas and kebabs round my way are Halal so I've often had it.

We don’t, I’ll happily buy it for DDs friend, but we only eat organic meat and I can’t find organic halal meat.
we don’t eat take aways really, pizza sometimes and only eat at restaurants where it’s organic or free range chicken or we have fish or veggie option.

Disclaimer - I have one at uni and I doubt he follows the same rules. We’re also quite well off and I wouldn’t do it if it meant my children didn’t have sufficient essential amino acids when they were growing.

XenoBitch · 05/10/2024 22:22

Most kebab places are halal, and most of the KFC where I live are too.
It doesn't bother me.

ProvincialLady2024 · 05/10/2024 22:26

I wouldn't eat it home because I'd have to go out of my way to purchase it.

I assume it's more often than not halal when I eat at an "Indian" restaurant.

gano · 05/10/2024 22:38

Yes I do. I'm not Muslim. It's not something that bothers me.

Well all I say is its not going to happen 😅 love meat too much to give it up!

I am aware YOU won't, but saying that all of humanity will always eat meat is akin to saying you can see 400 years into the future.

No.

tillyandmilly · 06/10/2024 00:07

Barbaric! I hope in the future we will not murder animals for their flesh and that lab grown meat will be the norm - I pray for this to happen!

Growlybear83 · 06/10/2024 00:13

Yes, I eat halal meat regularly. As other people have said, many restaurants use halal meat and you wouldn't know you were eating it. In the local authority where I work, most of the school meals providers use halal meat so that Muslim children aren't confined to the vegetarian option.

My daughter is a Muslim and when she's living at home, she usually buys and cooks her own food, but on occasions when we are all eating together, I will buy and cook halal meat. We all only eat organic meat at home, and it's much harder to find organic halal meat, but my daughter gets deliveries from a reasonably local farm. Although she obviously doesn't celebrate Christmas now, my daughter and son in law do join us for Christmas lunch. The halal turkeys I buy from the farm come from exactly the same provider that I used for my turkey before she converted, but the butchers from the farm travel to the turkey farm and do their own slaughtering.

WhimsicalMoth · 06/10/2024 00:20

Well yes, it tastes the same , and it's killed in a nicer way. Win win.

I'm sure I read something saying that a lot (most?) of New Zealand lamb sold in uk supermarkets is halal.

All of Waitrose lamb is halal, I know that much.

trendingaliens · 06/10/2024 00:29

Not if I know it's halal - I'm Jewish! But I am not strictly Kosher in a sense that I eat all meat apart from pork

SherryBaby11 · 06/10/2024 00:31

exactly the same provider that I used for my turkey before she converted

Sorry Grin

Cobblersorchard · 06/10/2024 00:34

I try and avoid it but I work in Leicester and it’s everywhere unfortunately on campus. I have vegetarian where I can but can’t avoid it completely.

At home we mostly buy meat from the farm shop (we live rurally), that’s most definitely not halal.

BadLad · 06/10/2024 00:44

I never check, so I assume I’ve had it many times. Not bothered either way.

Solent123 · 06/10/2024 00:51

Not knowingly but having eaten in Nando's then probably.

LockForMultiball · 06/10/2024 00:51

I'll happily eat halal meat, I don't really care. But it should absolutely be clearly labelled as such, so that people can make an informed decision. My friend has been raised to believe that as a Sikh, he must not eat ritually killed meat, such as halal and kosher meat. But I guess nobody cares about Sikhs.

This is why I have always said halal should be clearly labelled and not be the only option - for those it really does matter to, such as your friend. Those saying 'why wouldn't you eat it?' clearly think only one set of religious rules matter.

Edingril · 06/10/2024 01:01

Well I eat out and don't check everything I eat so I presume I have

Bananafoster · 06/10/2024 01:08

I choose to not eat halal meat. I avoid it where possible. I’m sure I may have eaten it unknowingly, however it’s been a very long time since I had an Indian Takeaway, and I won’t eat at Popeyes or KFC etc.

Part of my reason comes from personal choice. Just as Muslims can choose to avoid non-halal meat, so do I have the right to choice, based off my beliefs (as a Catholic I don't want my food blessed by another religion) and also simply my personal preference.

I completely respect the Muslim religion and I would never expect a Muslim to eat something they were not comfortable with. I completely respect their right to eat halal. In return, I ask for equal respect.

Expecting people of other cultures, backgrounds or religions, or no religion at all, to just be ok with eating halal meat is not acceptable to me. People seem to think that the majority need to be accommodating, but it’s not about that. True diversity and equality is about mutual respect. One groups practices and beliefs should not be accommodated at the expense of another groups, even if you don’t believe in the validity of their beliefs, or even if you think you’re just trying to be nice and tolerant.

So often when I choose not to eat halal, it’s also out of defiance, as a means to push back against people who would prioritise one groups needs over another. I respect Muslims rights to eat in accordance to their beliefs. I expect the same respect in return.
