Fed up of foreign news dominating our news

sickofthenews · 04/10/2024 22:07

I do realise the unrest in the Middle East is significant, but every bulletin is dominated by the minutiae of it.

I want to see more of what's going on here, more of what's going on in our government.

Surely there's news here?

It’s dominating news bulletins at the moment as it’s the most significant news item impacting the whole world.

What news items do you think should have a higher priority?

MotiRoller · 04/10/2024 22:13

YANBU. It’s not affecting the whole world any more than the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq were and unless there was a major development in those they were rarely the first item on the news for most of the decades they were going on.

But a few years ago at Labour Party conference Israel/Palestine was voted the most important topic on the agenda above any local issues. One might ask why they are so mouth frothingly obsessed with one particular foreign conflict when there are many hundreds around the world, including some that are much closer to home (hello Ukraine). There’s a pretty obvious answer.

BruvIDKwtfisgoinonrn · 04/10/2024 22:16

The escalation has serious implications for security far beyond the region.

That's difficult to answer unless there are news items closer to home I'm made aware of by watching the news 🤪

Yanbu. I've barely read the news for the last year because every day the headline is about Israel conflict.
Yes it's important to be talked about, but I agree it is just too much and has completely dominated the headlines for the last 12 months.
People say it has an impact but how exactly? I have noticed any change in my life caused by this war. With the Ukraine situation, it had a huge impact on gas prices, oil and food etc.
War has been raging on in the Middle East for decades, I just don't see why this latest fight is suddenly so important

fiddleleaffig · 04/10/2024 22:33

*haven't noticed any impact

A genocide is happening and you're happy to turn a blind eye and not see it .....

Apparently the world once said never again....turns out that is only the case if it affects you directly.

It's sad.

RoadToRhodes · 04/10/2024 22:37

I don't want that bloody foreign weather either!
Hurricanes, storms, cyclones... damned foreign weather!
If it doesn't stop we should leave the ECHR!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 04/10/2024 22:37

It's a massively important issue, of course it's being covered extensively.

But also, parliament isn't sitting at the moment, which will be having an impact on news I guess - once we get nearer to the budget it will be that that is being discussed endlessly.

There's also barely a functioning opposition at the moment, again probably reducing news a bit. Soon we'll have the excitement of the climax of the Tory leadership contest to fill the news.

BiggerBoat1 · 04/10/2024 22:39

Are you for real? It’s a bloody humanitarian crisis and you’re not interested because the people affected are a bit foreign. We really are in trouble.

BruvIDKwtfisgoinonrn · 04/10/2024 22:39

Please don’t use climax and Tory in the same sentence again 🤮

Circumferences · 04/10/2024 22:41

When the price of oil goes through the roof again, because Israel are now talking about targeting Iran oil facilities, at least you'll know why you can't afford to drive to Tesco anymore.

OMGsamesame · 04/10/2024 22:43

Just click on the UK news section?

Parliament hasn't been sitting for 3 weeks....

And what does being interested in it achieve exactly?
Are you solving this humanitarian crisis, or posting on mumsnet?

Or maybe you're turning a blind eye to the mess your own Country is in, which is something you might actually be able to influence if you weren't preoccupied with things which are completely outside your control.

I know, right??

it’s like, why did we even bother getting into WW2 as hitler had nothing to do with us. We should just have left him to get on with it and the bloody Europeans should have fought their own battles.

we need to focus on making England great again! And that starts with English news for English people!

The uk doesn’t have genocide happening at its front door. Any problems in the uk pale into insignificance compared to Palestinian and Lebanon.

We got into WW2 because we had an agreement with other countries to defend them if they were invaded.

Not because people were sat around reading the bbc news, and ignoring the fact that the dire state of the NHS is a national crisis

So why don't you go over there and fight then. See you.

This is the laziest thing I've ever heard.
You do know how the Internet works right? It's not exactly hard to find local news.

I know right?

stupid bloody agreements where we want to help our allies.

I don’t need to be educated about world affairs thank you very much! I just want to be able to moan about how shit England is thanks to all the bloody forriners.

They weren't stupid bloody agreements, they were made to protect our own interests.

What's stupid is people like you going on about World affairs when you're completely uneducated about the millions of people who are in a precarious situation in this Country. Do tell, what agreements have been made to protect their interests?

Realtime dehumanisation is happening right in front of our very eyes because of our country's involvement in the past and today! Plus the escalations that could involve many other countries including ours where we could possibly be no different to those poor families pulling out loved ones from the rubble.

I don't want to watch the news about cats getting stuck on a tree or Betty celebrating her 120th birthday, i want to know what the fuck our politicians are doing to stop this atrocity. So far we are watching realtime dehumanisation but all is justified by our political elites and media elites.

SillyTilly2 · 04/10/2024 23:15

Yeah I have not seen any updates on what is happening in the Kardashian
family for ages. Let’s get back to what really matters!
