Fed up of foreign news dominating our news

I do realise the unrest in the Middle East is significant, but every bulletin is dominated by the minutiae of it.

I want to see more of what's going on here, more of what's going on in our government.

Surely there's news here?

OP posts:

SillyTilly2 · 04/10/2024 23:15

Yeah I have not seen any updates on what is happening in the Kardashian
family for ages. Let’s get back to what really matters!

This really sums it up for me, you actually think the OP is talking about the Kardashians you're that unaware of what's happening in your own Country

I guess the bbc news would have to make it headline news every day before people like you understand how many people are dying in hospitals right now because they can't get decent healthcare

FiddlyDiddlyDee · 04/10/2024 23:21

teatimelover · 04/10/2024 23:12

Realtime dehumanisation is happening right in front of our very eyes because of our country's involvement in the past and today! Plus the escalations that could involve many other countries including ours where we could possibly be no different to those poor families pulling out loved ones from the rubble.

I don't want to watch the news about cats getting stuck on a tree or Betty celebrating her 120th birthday, i want to know what the fuck our politicians are doing to stop this atrocity. So far we are watching realtime dehumanisation but all is justified by our political elites and media elites.

Realtime dehumanisation happens every day in corridors in A&E

No protests in the streets for that though. Because people are so involved with what's going on elsewhere they think the worst that happens in this Country is a cat falling out of a tree.

TeenLifeMum · 04/10/2024 23:23

Use the BBC website and you can get your county’s news, England’s news and worldwide.

I personally think that media that only covers local issues with no mix of worldwide atrocities is very damaging. Remembering the wider picture is importance.

Ironically, I was at a conference just before the latest Israel/Palestine conflict began and they reported than Israel had the best/most enviable financial set up for healthcare. Sometimes great healthcare comes with other issues.

GoadyMcBigot · 04/10/2024 23:31

one of the biggest issues our country faces is the sheer stupidity and ignorance of so many of the population who not only don’t have a decent education but also don’t understand the value of education. Consequently, they are not able to comprehend that seemingly distant events have a material impact on life at home.

that is why this country is a little bit fucked.

MeinKraft · 04/10/2024 23:35

This is our news. The UK is sending arms to Israel, our country is aligning with a country that is committing genocide and antagonising a neighbour that’s known to have weapons of mass destruction. The middle East might be as far from us ideologically as it’s possible to be, but geographically they are relatively close.

Orangeandgold · 04/10/2024 23:38

I definitely wish there was more variation of “foreign” news mixed with a little bit of “good” news and something to look forward to.

My family are from a war torn country that doesn’t get a glimmer of the UKs attention - and there are plenty of other bits of news from other countries that could be useful.

it’s the lack of variety that annoys me.

WaterBuffalo · 04/10/2024 23:51

The state of healthcare is shocking and very, very worrying. However, I didn't see a lot of coverage about that even before this current crisis in the middle east, so I don't think it's being pushed aside to make place for reporting on the middle east.

Having said that it is absolutely insane how the situation in the middle east has suddenly escalated and I think considering that you claim there is so much reporting on it you seem to be blissfully unaware how bad the situation there is.

I also find it quite scary that you consider this not to be your news. Apart from our government and our industry being quite directly involved in this and apart from the fact that what happens in the middle east has the potential to directly affect our lives here, it's humans dying and suffering over there.

workplaceshenanigans · 04/10/2024 23:51

I follow the news website of another country, and the vast majority of reporting on there is their national news. I've just had a quick look just now, and of the lead stories on the site (over 20 of them), none at all are international news.

teatimelover · 04/10/2024 23:53

@FiddlyDiddlyDee perhaps one should ask instead of arming Israel, why don't we invest in our own blooming NHS or why we turn a blind eye on our politicians for getting in bed with certain lobby groups who are actively working on building illegal settlements in the region and influencing our fate as a whole country and potentially putting our county's security at risk.

Moving on from the ME, for instance, Zelenskyy and Putin were about to come to an agreement to not go to war until our national treasure Boris Johnson came along and ruined it the night before making promises to Zelenskyy. Cue thousands dead, thousands became refugees, billions of our taxes gone to arm Ukraine, economy gone downhill and many MN threads about their Ukrainian guests.

The ME is a pressure cooker and if it explodes, it will be worse than Russia vs Ukraine and its implications.

LadyDimpletonFrisby · 04/10/2024 23:57

I have a painful eye today. I think this ought to dominate national news.

KenAdams · 05/10/2024 00:51

I stayed up late the other night and listened to the world news. I had no idea about what's going on in Sudan to women and girls until then. So I'd like more diverse global news because we're missing information on some unimaginable atrocities with the 24 hour loop of the same story.

No, it should be me as I definitely have a cold coming on

GildedRage · 05/10/2024 01:02

i'm with you op, maybe a mid week recap 20 minute segment on wednesdays.

MumonabikeE5 · 05/10/2024 01:03

Unrest.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 05/10/2024 01:11

I find social media is best for local news- road closures, new things being built etc

I also see the important national news stories on here like the woman who was raped to death.

I am concerned that the UK arms Israel and contributes to instability in the region. We should not profit from the death of innocent civilians and make the UK a target of future terrorist attacks. We are no longer a global superpower who can solve the world’s problems with aggression. There’s literally millions of other projects that the money could be used to improve the lives of people in the UK.

Our Australian news is currently dominated by the Middle East even though we are so far away. Also, there are protest marches etc in the large cities over here, plus petrol prices are increasing again.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/10/2024 01:36

What channels are you getting your news from @sickofthenews? Both BBC and ITV provide local news programmes alongside national /international ones.

YANBU, globally, the news is awful. I stop watching from time to time. Your regional news shows/sited should keep you up to date with what you need to know.Brew

2MargerinesOnTheGo · 05/10/2024 01:40

For local news for local people, get on to your local Facebook group. There you can learn about happenings in your own neighbourhood. Delights such as

  • dog poo
  • what time the big Tesco stays open until
  • why cant horse riders pick up their horse’s poo
  • why the police helicopter is up
  • anyone recognise this front door?
  • best Chinese food on JustEat
  • which mobile phone company has the best signal.
  • bus timetables
  • more dog poo

Good luck! 🫡

SpiggingBelgium · 05/10/2024 01:43

Look it up then. A grown woman should be able to Google.

rainfallpurevividcat · 05/10/2024 01:44

I don't agree with the OP but I think we get too much on the US and not enough about the rest of Europe.

lavlavbluedillydilly · 05/10/2024 03:41

YADNBU. British news for British people.

Global news is boring and samey. They desperately need a new twist otherwise ratings will go down in the next episodes.

To be fair on OP, that would also count as foreign news.

GiantPigeon · 05/10/2024 05:25

If you read news on Google app, you can click 3 dots next to story you don't like and click not interested in this.

Some perspective, there's literally always been an ongoing war or build up to a war somewhere, the general public can't change that. My life is stressful and I don't have the headspace to absorb stuff like that.

Things I have on my custom news feed is technology (genuine interest), local area news, recipes and entertainment and thats it really. Interesting and harmless.

It wasn't that long ago you only seen the news at 6pm or in papers. Not forced into your brain every waking minute. So sometimes I don't read the news at all.

It doesn't make you a bad person not reading the news. Customise is it or limit yourself.

Savingthehedgehogs · 05/10/2024 05:54

What would you like the news to cover? Do you feel the news doesn’t reflect what is important to you or just you are tired of the war reporting? Fatigued by it all or afraid and therefore avoiding it?
