have you/would you travel UK to Spain uninsured ?

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:05

I cannot get insurance at the moment. I have not been told I cannot travel.

I am 45. No history of serious medical problems. The only thing I would want the insurance for is if I got injured and needed medical expenses covered.

I am going to Spain for 3 days.

Only if I had the savings to cover a hefty hospital bill if necessary.

canyon2000 · 04/10/2024 13:08

Why can't you get insurance at the moment? There must be a reason! Are you doing a sport/activity that could cause you to get injured?

SilverPiscis · 04/10/2024 13:08

If you have no serious medical issues and not have been told you cannot travel, why cannot you get insurance?
Have you got a GHIC card?

No, I would never travel abroad without insurance, it's utter madness. What if you had an accident and needed to be flown home? Extreme example but it could happen.

Why cant you get insured?

SillyTilly2 · 04/10/2024 13:10

No I would not travel without insurance

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:10

I have cancer. Grade 1, Not spread. But because I am waiting treatment (not surgery) no one will touch me or if they will they want ££££££££££ for a 3 day trip. I am not ill. I am not on meds.

3 days insurance would only be a few quid Confused It would cover repatriation costs. It isn't just being in hospital you need to think about, which GHIC would cover, it's any special requirements to bring you home.

TheBelleOfBelfastCity · 04/10/2024 13:10

Nope. Nor do I have sympathy for the people who travel uninsured and then start GoFundMe accounts begging for people to pay for their hospital expenses etc. Ridiculous, entitled and irresponsible.

Anything can happen OP. Don’t risk it.

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:11

@titchy I have been quoted £900 for 3 days.

titchy · 04/10/2024 13:12

Ah cross post. Sorry to hear that. Sad I'd probably risk it tbh in that case.

No, it’s not “only a few quid”. She’s uninsurable, so not even a million quid would sort it.

I have cancer. Getting insurance is difficult. There are specialist ones such as Insurance With or Stay Sure. But if you can’t, I would just go with a global health card.

AceOfCups · 04/10/2024 13:13

What if you died?

will your relatives be able to afford the thousands of pounds to get you home for burial?

or if you ended up with a very complex medical problem needing an expensive flight home with an onboard doctor?

or even if you just broke your leg could you easily afford to upgrade to business class for the journey back?

personally I wouldn’t - I used to work in travel insurance and have seen too many horror stories where people are under-insured for their needs or got the dates wrong so weren’t covered

Viviennemary · 04/10/2024 13:13

No I wouldn't go. Not worth the risk. The premium is high for a reasonl costs if something goes wrong costs would be astronomical.

AllThePotatoesAreSingingJingleBells · 04/10/2024 13:13

No. My appendix burst in Spain and I nearly died. We were insured and got a copy of the bill. It would have bought a small house outright. There was a woman brought in the day after me. She’d literally just got off the bus arriving for her holiday and always hit by a speeding taxi. Broke both legs, among other injuries. Was told she was going to be in hospital there for at least 8 weeks.

In case you wondered, it’s much much cheaper to transport a dead body home than a living one with medical needs. It’s typically charged a £200 to £400 per mile.

Don’t risk it. Needing medical treatment usually is outside of your control.

edit - missed your update. Frustrating but not worth the risk.

SilverPiscis · 04/10/2024 13:15

When are you going? Cannot you get a GHIC?
It has be so upsetting for you if you are feeling well...

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:16

I have now managed to find a company who specialise and will cover me. Cost £200. The same price of of the holiday. It's total f'ing dog sh*t.

Yes I have cancer, no I am not ill or needing meds or treatment or medical support and there is no risk I will be ill with the cancer while away

Only the other week a friend broke her hip before she got out the airport at the other end.

Ask about cost of annual policy it might not be much more, also speak with Maggies Centre they might be able to point you in the direction of a cheaper company

It’s shit but it’s life OP. We’ve paid similar for DD - she’s perfectly healthy but had spinal surgery years ago that insurance companies don’t like the look of.

Glad to hear it. That’s more in line with what I would expect to pay!! X

Needanewname42 · 04/10/2024 13:18

Cross post.
Ask how much more for annual policy so any other trips are covered.
But it's stupid to go with out it.

Did you try Post Office insurance? Pre-existing medical conditions are sort of their USP.

LostittoBostik · 04/10/2024 13:18

No, because an unexpected death can bankrupt the rest of your family (body repatriation etc)

aodirjjd · 04/10/2024 13:18

Have you checked staysure? They only charged me £45 for a weeks European holiday. I had cancer but had only just got diagnosed so hadn’t started any treatment.

it did exclude cover for anything related to the cancer, but again it was so early the only thing that might have happened was the biopsy sites got infected which I figured I could cover if needed!

CoastalCalm · 04/10/2024 13:19

I would if I had a GHIC , that would cover treatment in a state hospital
