have you/would you travel UK to Spain uninsured ?

I cannot get insurance at the moment. I have not been told I cannot travel.

I am 45. No history of serious medical problems. The only thing I would want the insurance for is if I got injured and needed medical expenses covered.

I am going to Spain for 3 days.

I wouldn't travel abroad without insurance, no.

We have a Staysure annual travel insurance now, and also our GHIC cards.

I have diabetes and thyroid issues, which were all declared. I went for Staysure because diabetes was making getting decent insurance quite difficult and I could get it with them for just under £200, if I remember rightly.

I'm sorry you are in this position, although it sounds like you have now found a better deal. Take it.

I once broke my right arm badly while on a trip to Paris and needed major surgery on it before I could travel back. It was actually covered by EHIC back in those days (and I did have additional cover if needed) with me only having to pay €70 for use of my hospital room, cleaning and servicing etc. I dread to think what it probably cost and wouldn't chance it.

I would if I had a GHIC , that would cover treatment in a state hospital

But it doesn't cover repatriation

CloseEncountersOfTheTurdKind · 04/10/2024 14:35

I was in a serious, freak accident abroad and spent two weeks critically ill in hospital before being transferred back to the UK by private air ambulance. I was very glad we had health insurance and always tell everyone to get it. We would never have dreamt that what happened was even possible!

No way. You might have a problem with your appendix, stroke, accident. My friend didn't have any one holiday, and she came off the back of the moped. She had to pay alot of money for the hospital. She ended up cutting her holiday short to come home, to be seen on the NHS.

I suppose it would be costly if anything did happen, but the chances of anything happening in 3days, and only for trip a to Spain is very unlikely.

I wouldn't pay for insurance.

And if something did happen eg. A car crash, that meant you needed hospital care and help getting home, what would you do?

I guess I'd have to pay for it

if you have a spare hundred thousand that’s not a bad plan. Could have been prevented by spending £20 or so on insurance.

Do you have the cost of a spare house handy? A friend was hit by a car abroad and the bill for multiple surgery and medical repatriation (if that's the right term) was just shy of £500k.

She (or he)?must! Clearly they’d never dream of relying on luck or internet begging for cash.

Then you'd be very unwise indeed.

Pirri · 04/10/2024 14:55

It's not the minor illnesses or injuries that you need insurance for. It's not the cancer that's not going to give you a problem. It's the unforseen catastrophic thing. Car accident, heart attack. The sort of thing that means you need medevac home and costs £10000s.
I'm not a believer in insuring things I can pay for like washing machines. But I wouldn't skip house building insurance or travel insurance.
GHIC covers you for treatment in most places but be aware some places in Mallorca for example won't honour it even though they should.

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2024 14:55

Thats the whole point of insurance, its unlikely that you will need it, hope you don't but are very glad that you did when you do need it

No serious medical problems and you can't get an insurance? How come?

And no I wouldn't.

Anedina · 04/10/2024 14:57

People spend thousands bringing dead bodies back, is this compulsory, can't they just cremate you there.

Ilovemyshed · 04/10/2024 14:57

No, absolutely would not risk it. Would stay in the UK until I could find some sensibly priced insurance.

Wellll, I've never been hit by a car in my whole life, very unfortunate if I did within 3 days of my holiday. I guess we weight up our own risks, ya know what I'm sayin'

Anedina · 04/10/2024 15:00

Sometimes you can't get insurance if you are awaiting diagnosis or they will insure you but not for any existing medical conditions including unrelated ones.

Anedina · 04/10/2024 15:07

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:25

staysure and allclear wouldn't touch me - even though I used staysure when I was waiting the diagnosis. I have always used staysure before for many years for both single and annual policies They have now lost my business, their name is mud to me and I will slate them at every opportunity

There was a large thread on here a few months ago about insurance and medical conditions, Staysure was mentioned a lot and it wasn't good.

Bimblesalong · 04/10/2024 15:07

I think I see from earlier in the thread that you’ve found insurance for a couple of hundred. I hope you’ve taken it and can have a good few days abroad. I went to Spain just before my first cancer op (insured) and it was just what I needed to help to build some mental resilience.
take care and all the best with your treatment.

kolalumps · 04/10/2024 15:10

So, why not get a quote without disclosing the cancer.
Take a risk they don’t find out.

Your plane crashes … they won’t be looking for the cancer …

If her plane crashes she won't need insurance. A quick Google will show you many many cases where non disclosure has led to a lack of insurance payout and left people in very difficult situations
They is some really daft advice on here and I am glad OP hasn't taken it and has found insurance instead.
