have you/would you travel UK to Spain uninsured ?

I cannot get insurance at the moment. I have not been told I cannot travel.

I am 45. No history of serious medical problems. The only thing I would want the insurance for is if I got injured and needed medical expenses covered.

I am going to Spain for 3 days.

Can you get cover that excludes your pre existing condition? That might be worth checking but travel with a GHIC too but don't do any risky activities.

GinnyPiggie · 04/10/2024 13:20

It's worth thinking about companies that 'arrange' short trips to Spain - my mother was just covered by an 'old people's' type company and she has terminal cancer. It cost her £50!

I have now managed to find a company who specialise and will cover me. Cost £200. The same price of of the holiday. It's total f'ing dog sh*t.

Yes I have cancer, no I am not ill or needing meds or treatment or medical support and there is no risk I will be ill with the cancer while away

That isn't the point. You could be hit by a bus or caught up in a terror attack. If you ended up in a coma it would bankrupt your family. The government won't help pay for it. That's what insurance is for.

I would if I had a GHIC , that would cover treatment in a state hospital

Its not the treatment thats the issue, although I think the GHIC only covers emergency treatment anyway.
Its repartiation or long term treatment that would be the issue BUT it sound slike OP is sorted now anyway
I NEVER leave the country without Travel Insurance

I have cancer. Grade 1, Not spread. But because I am waiting treatment (not surgery) no one will touch me or if they will they want ££££££££££ for a 3 day trip. I am not ill. I am not on meds.

As others have suggested try Staysure, they cover my DH with cancer. Take out a yearly policy, his was around £200 and he's 67 with other health issues.

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:24

@LostittoBostik someone without cancer would not be charged £200 for the same trip, so why should I be penalised when my specific condition won't require a dr while am away ? I went away earlier this year to Spain for a week, before I was diagnosed, and it cost £30. So why does mine cost so much ?

floooops · 04/10/2024 13:25

staysure and allclear wouldn't touch me - even though I used staysure when I was waiting the diagnosis. I have always used staysure before for many years for both single and annual policies They have now lost my business, their name is mud to me and I will slate them at every opportunity

I would and have.
Only to europe with the EHICS card (or whatever the new equivalent is callled now)

Toddlerteaplease · 04/10/2024 13:27

No absolutely not!

Toddlerteaplease · 04/10/2024 13:28

I don't understand why you can't get insurance, if you've no medical issues.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/10/2024 13:29

So you do have medical issues!

Blessedbunny · 04/10/2024 13:29

Many people seem to, then rely on begging on the internet to get money if they need it, because they didn’t get insurance.

Because that’s just not how insurance works.

I wouldn't since we left the EU!

We have EU passports and they would be of no help if we needed to be medically repatriated

Unfortunately, you have a serious medical condition and it's up to you if you want to take the risk of travelling to another country without full medical coverage.

There is 90% nothing will happen. But the risk of being hospitalised overseas without insurance will make you liable for serious debt. And you can guarantee the hospital will take you to court in Britain to recoup their medical costs.

If you have cancer and don't want to pay the hefty insurance to travel abroad, holiday at home.

Alondra · 04/10/2024 13:44

One more thing regarding Spain....

If you need to be hospitalised as a tourist, they won't treat you unless you have full medical coverage or show you can pay the bill.

The days of travelling overseas without medical cover (specially with a pre existing condition) are long gone.

loveydoveyloon · 04/10/2024 13:49

went to spain last week for a week, took GHIC card (or whatever they are called)

I did not get for travel insurance, i think its personal preference and if you can deal with the consequences should something happen, that's anything from holiday cancelled, lost mobile phone, injury or death

That’s really weird as I used staysure in your exact circumstances. Do you have a particularly unusual cancer? I had breast cancer.

You really need to ask?
It's about risk factor. My friend was given the all clear from Cancer then it came back suddenly and with a vengeance. A Niger risk of that happening to her than someone who had never been diagnosed with cancer.

I take it you have a few million in the bank then to pay for medical costs (which your GHIC will not fully cover) and repatriation should you have needed it? If not, you were just being irresponsible.

Should the worst happen is there someone who could pay and arrange for your body to be returned to The UK - while being fluent in Spanish and being able to navigate Spanish bureaucracy?
Thats what an Insurance company would do.
Being worried about having your phone nicked is the worst reason to have travel insurance

ButtSurgery · 04/10/2024 14:15

Have you checked things like bank account policies? I'm with Lloyds and pay for the fancy pants account with travel insurance etc, and it covered me for everything apart from pre-existing conditional even though under neurology and colorectal surgeons. I rang them to check before travel and they weren't worried at all about them. Worth a look!

Katiesaidthat · 04/10/2024 14:19

Glad you have found someone to insure you. I worked for a medical company in Spain and in 2003 I swiped a guy´s VISA for €12,000 in order to fly his ill wife with nurse in a medicalised jet back to the UK.
When my mum was in hospital she shared a room with an English girl who fell off a terrace and had to have spinal reconstruction and her left foot was seriously mangled and needed very specialist care. Her dad was over and they were at their wits end as to how to get her back to England, the consulate said stuff it, they were on their own. The E-111 back then, and EHIC now, dont cover transfers.

You're mad and irresponsible quite honestly not to have travel insurance in place.
