Sober October 2024

Is anyone doing Sober October this year?

I haven't seen any threads yet (I don't want to double up on threads) so forgive me if there is one already!

I'd love to set up a thread where we can all band together and share how it goes (and have support if needed).

So to kick things off, what's made you decide to do sober October this year?

It's my first ever sober October (I did my first ever dry January earlier this year). However, I found my drinking has had a slow creep and I want a bit of a reset.

Eager hopeful bump

I’m planning to do it. I’ve got a few digestive issues which are exacerbated by rich food and alcohol and these have flared up recently after a few too many evenings out. So a month long reset is ideal!

CalmConfident · 30/09/2024 22:02

DH just announced he’s doing it (he needs to) so felt positive to support him !

december2020 · 30/09/2024 23:05

Ah amazing!

Is there anything you are planning to do for the first week? Or taking each day as it comes ?

I've ordered some alcohol free beers in and an assortment of teas as a starting point for any alcohol itches.

I'm joining in! Bored with drinking wine and eating snacks in the evenings! Cups of tea from tomorrow!

middleagedspreading · 01/10/2024 11:13

I'm in :) it will hands down be the first time I've had a break from alcohol in about 5 years.

I've had enough

Just finished reading alcohol lied to me, eye opening

YesIJudge · 01/10/2024 11:17

I'm in. I've cut my drinking waaaaay down over the last couple of years because I know I was drinking far too much. It gets easier over time. I had a drink on Sat evening the the time before that was about 4 weeks before, so I'm hoping it'll be easy. I feel a million times better when I don't drink.n

You'll feel so much better. You won't notice much initially but it'll come.

Hildabaggins · 01/10/2024 11:21

I’m in! I’ve started already. I listened to a podcast recently that talked about how bad any alcohol is for your sleep. My sleep is terrible so I’ve decided to give up the beers for now and see if it improves.

MakingPlans2025 · 01/10/2024 12:13

I'm day 58 or something at the moment so will be hanging on for October and well beyond.
Highly recommend The Sober Diaries by Claire Pooley for anyone who is questioning their relationship with alcohol.

Hi all ooo I've been looking for a thread on here for sober October x
I've done this for the past few years and it's a really good reset for me especially after the summer time drinking I seem to get stuck in!
Have been only been drinking at the weekends for a month so now I'm ready to go drink free for the whole month!
Dh on board aswell so it will make things easier!

I'm in! Drank waaaay too much over the summer and September, and I'm really feeling the burden of it now. First weekend is always the hardest but by the second week I start feeling so much better

How is everyone doing!
We're on Day 3! That is about 9.6% of the month in, so almost double digits now!

I've been trying to drink lots of teas to compensate from having a glass of wine. Though, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get sick of tea fast (I'm not usually a tea drinker).

I am secretly hoping to lose some weight from the lack of alcohol calories but with the way I'm currently reaching for some biscuits or cheese which I don't usually do, it is not looking promising ha!

Ooo, I heard the sober diaries podcast is really good but I haven't listened to it!

How is everyone doing today?
We're about 12.9% through Sober October!

I am finding this evening a bit tricker as it's Friday and I would LOVE a glass (or 2) of red.

Hello decided to do it as a’project’ following DD starting at University- needed something else to think about...
currently not feeling any better for not drinking & would love to lose some weight but really am just missing having a glass of red wine whilst reading/mumsnetting.
Not big drinkers but probably only do 2 nights a week not having something, so thought it would be good to do

Hildabaggins · 05/10/2024 09:31

I am doing well. Most evenings, I still get an urge to drink but I am managing to resist the booze. There is a bottle of wine in the fridge, I am amazed I’ve not given in and opened it yet!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/10/2024 09:54

Happy Saturday! I will be honest, yesterday from about 5-7 I could happily have had a glass of wine, finished work and just wanted to deload- but once that passed I felt fine, and feel so much better for it this morning

middleagedspreading · 05/10/2024 13:51

Afternoon everyone, I've been doing great. Agree with other last night felt abit harder but I kept reminding myself of the beautiful sleep that will be coming my sleep has been awful for a good year now, to the point I've needed meds. Wine knocks me out but then I'm plagued with the 2am wake up thirsty, needing a wee then not being able to drop off. Look at the difference since stopping drinking on Sunday

So two pictures one from the end of September and one from this week

I think my sleep quality is a lot better too!
Today I slept unusually late for me till 8.
Then it was dog walks, swimming lessons (with DS), some errands and then made a giant plate of French toast for DS and I. I'm just about to do another dog walk.
I'm feeling really energetic today so maybe it's the combo of the long sleep and no alcohol?

How is everyone's Sunday?

We are about 19% into Sober October - that's almost one fifth done!

OP posts:
middleagedspreading · 08/10/2024 19:39

100% on the more energy I feel great, less irritable in the mornings too when it's quite stressful in this house.

Treated myself to some nice drinks for the evening, nice ginger beers and sanpellegrino lemon and blood orange.

Think now the first weekend is done I'll be able to complete this.

Are you still on the teas @december2020

Hildabaggins · 09/10/2024 23:28

I can’t believe I’ve made it this far. I have found it easier than I thought I would. I’m having the odd non-alcoholic beer in the evenings. Nearly one third of the way there. I think my sleep has improved.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/10/2024 07:31

My sleep score was 82 last night which is really good for me. The quality of my sleep is improving a lot, it's just the length of time that I could do with improving but I cannot seem to do that. Great intentions to go to bed early never materialise.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/10/2024 08:45

How's everyone feeling? I think tonight will be a test of resolve, it's the 2nd Friday of not drinking, I think dh is ready to crack now. He may hold out til tomorrow, but he's already started saying how he's already done 11 days and that's enough. So I could be sobering on my own from tonight!

I've made a mahoosive list of jobs to smash through this weekend to keep me motivated
