Fraud on tax code HMRC

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:18

I've just registered to look at my tax code and paid employment on the Gov.co.uk website, and have found that a fraudulent company (B&D Transport, Midlands, multiple Romanian names running it and other businesses from a normal house address) have me down as THEIR EMPLOYEE and say they are paying me! And I'm paying them tax!!
How so?
I've only ever worked for the County Council as PAYE.

Help!
I've checked my Credit report - nothing weird and still an almost 100% (for what it's worth?!)

if you blank out anything identifying… can you post a screen shot?

Mindymomo · 29/09/2024 14:27

You definitely need to ring HMRC about this as it could impact the amount of tax and NI you are paying.

Tell HMRC immediately - you'll pay higher taxes because of this.
Some illegal immigrant is using your name and national insurance number.
They will eventually use these payslips to get credit maybe even a mortgage so alert all credit agencies - 3 main ones - Equifax etc

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:36

Ok. I just checked Equifax and so far there's nothing on there.
Who else should I check?
And how do I tell them? I looked at Equifax and it said that my positive could move to a negative if it was associated with someone else's fraud 😞

OP posts:
hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:36

could it be a placement?

NeedingCoffee · 29/09/2024 14:36

Well done for noticing OP- much better to sort this out soon as per PP comments - you are almost certainly the victim of identity fraud here.

Sparklesandbeer · 29/09/2024 14:36

Yeah they run someone who is not allowed to work full hours or allowed to work at all on you.
I would have thought having everything digotal would have stopped that by now. Happened at my work in 2008....

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:36

Not at a transport company registered to a Romanian semi-detached miles from my house, no, probably not.

OP posts:
Sparklesandbeer · 29/09/2024 14:37

They can't get loans on you though. They just use you to run the hours through

hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:37

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:33

Yes, Council for twenty years.

but says you started at CC in 2020?

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:37

@Sparklesandbeer how did they find / choose me?
Even I struggle to register with HMRC! And I've never done a self assessment.

Tell them. It's better than being saddled with someone else's debt.
Do some research yourself OP! - google credit agencies.

Your national insurance number was somewhere. Where I was they run former employee's ones 🤦 I left swiftly when thsese things came out and kept an eye ever since

hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:39

apologies

NeedingCoffee · 29/09/2024 14:40

The digital aspect has helped a little (the economy generally) because HMRC are taxing the fraudulent individual very heavily as they "know" that they already have another job at the Council. So at least there is plenty tax flowing into the system from them....

How could someone take loan or even mortgage with a payslip only....

Should make it easier for you to work out who has leaked your national insurance number.
If you've been at the same place for 20 years so you haven't given out to many work places or recruitment agencies.
So the leak has come from the council or somewhere recently that you had to give your national insurance number to.
Maybe even someone you know.
