Fraud on tax code HMRC

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:18

I've just registered to look at my tax code and paid employment on the Gov.co.uk website, and have found that a fraudulent company (B&D Transport, Midlands, multiple Romanian names running it and other businesses from a normal house address) have me down as THEIR EMPLOYEE and say they are paying me! And I'm paying them tax!!
How so?
I've only ever worked for the County Council as PAYE.

Help!
I've checked my Credit report - nothing weird and still an almost 100% (for what it's worth?!)

use the paid option of Equifax (think you can get a free trial) and lock down your credit record. It'll stop some but not all credit searches/applications going through

it didn’t stop me getting my 0% loan on some new windows a few months ago when I’d forgotten I had it was locked down when I applied. Should stop some hopefully if something dodgy going on

Not at a transport company registered to a Romanian semi-detached miles from my house, no, probably not.

on the Gov Companies website… it’s registered to an address in coventry

where did you get Romania from?

How could someone take loan or even mortgage with a payslip only....

Is it just for a month?
It's only September how do we know how many more times it's going to be used.
This can be a trial run.

You can doctor that one wage slip and produce many.

StMarieforme · 29/09/2024 14:46

@hillroad the people listed are Romanian if you click on the people link.

The 'people' part specifies Romanian. Also there are other 'companies' registered at that address, also Romanian.
It's all there to see on Companies House website.

Aaargh, so hard to wait until tomorrow for HMRC to open!

the business has been registered on Companies website every year since 2016 and has submitted accounts so i doubt its fraudulent

Yea but you cannot take finance with payslips only.
While it's good idea to keep an eye on the credit file (always) , they would need way more than payslips to take out finance

Notreat · 29/09/2024 14:49

You should phone HMRC and tell them you have never worked for that company and you have not received any money from them.
Also on the HMRC site I think there is Somewhere you can log that the information is incorrect

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:50

If they have my NI number, surely they can get into the HMRC app too, and ultimately find my address / history etc? Even child benefit & DoBs are on there.
Can I have a new NI number ~without entering witness protection~ ?

You get a letter through the door to say tax code has been changed, yes.

Unless you're on the online portal.
When did you register to go online?
Then you get an alert via email if your email is on there, which it should be.

I've had a lot of jobs, agencies, contractor etc - so I'm always looking at my tax code as I always over pay.
There letters and emails are what usually alerts me to log in.

I can say online that I NO LONGER work for them, but I want to speak tomorrow to a person.
I've already left an online report to HMRC, for what it's worth.

They don't always write to you about a tax code change, you may have opted out of written correspondence but they always email you to say their has been a change and to log onto your tax account, they don't generally say what the change is, there are never any links in the email.

Peasnbeans · 29/09/2024 14:53

It was only changed 11 days ago, so 7 working days max.
No letter yet.
Everything else comes through the door.

Tell HMRC immediately - you'll pay higher taxes because of this.
Some illegal immigrant is using your name and national insurance number.
They will eventually use these payslips to get credit maybe even a mortgage so alert all credit agencies - 3 main ones - Equifax etc

This. Definitely ring HMRC and tell them. I know it's often a long wait but you'll pay additional tax if you don't.

No you need more information that your NI number to log in. You need a code and password. The system would be extremely insecure if all you needed was an NI number.

The best fraudulent companies are the ones registered!

Best case scenario regarding the company their employee is the one that is solely lying and the company isn't involved.

Thay is more worrying actually, then they would have had to produce a driver's license or passport and bank account statement all with the same name to prove who they are.

If the company overlooked that then they are just as guilty and maybe part of identity fraud.

Arafon · 29/09/2024 14:55

It sounds like you haven't opted out of receiving letters so you should get them regarding tax code changes, DH does and he has an online account.

Absolutely.

So while be aware, don't panic

I've known people to take whole mortgages with less.
Also, finance if they are using the OP ID they can take out finance easier - all they have to do is give another bank account with the same name which is their aim anyway to keep that name / ID.
A new email to receive correspondence.

Thanks @Arafon @caringcarer @DadJoke @hillroad @Justice4Friend @Sparklesandbeer @StMarieforme @LostOnTheWayToManderley @OnTheBoardwalk @Mindymomo
But I am definitely worrying!

You don't want a new insurance number you want your old one.

Stop with the witness protection nonsense - makes me not want to bother with you.

If you have access to your portal they cannot. Change your password if it makes you feel better make sure it's your phone number and email on it.

Ring HMRC tomorrow, inform all credit agencies, it's all you can do.
Keep an eye on these platforms as well, monthly.
Let your employer know so they can advise others and see if anyone else you work with has and the same issue.

If you know banks who give finance without doing correct AML checks and without correct paperwork, report them.

Having someone's NIC does not necessarily mean having IDs in OP's name. As I am saying, op should be aware and keep an eye on credit file, but no need to fully panic that she will end up with someone else's debt.
