Do people still chain smoke?
I know one person. Very unhealthy and often unwell but can't stop.

Not anymore. I used to chainsmoke though. Surely you'd have to be a millionaire to chainsmoke with the price of cigarettes.

Differentstarts · 27/09/2024 11:35

Yes their one of the healthiest people I know

Good point must cost them a fortune.

Not throughout the day like people used to, but my friend chainsmokes in the evenings. She has a TERRIBLE cough and I've "suggested" she cuts down. She had a traumatic event and started again recently. I hope she can stop again soon.

patsy999 · 27/09/2024 11:45

I used to smoke 60 a day till i gave up in january.
I have severe COPD and asthma from it though.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/09/2024 11:45

Not for a long time.

I doubt that.

catin8oots · 27/09/2024 12:29

I have a friend that still smokes 40 a day so pretty much a chain smoker when she's awake

TomatoSandwiches · 27/09/2024 12:30

Not for a good while, it's a coping mechanism I think.

butterfly0404 · 27/09/2024 12:31

My mum was - 2 primary lung cancers as a result in each lung which eventually killed her. She didn't stop even after having half a lung removed and immunotherapy.

She prioritised nicotine over just about anything else

I also suspect passive smoking (I was her carer) caused my bladder cancer.

Fudgetheparrot · 27/09/2024 12:48

Yes, my FIL. He’s mid 60s and drinks like a fish but seems to be in reasonably good nick all things considered. He tones it down when he’s with us as doesn’t want to smoke around the kids (although he does still pop out for a few) but I think on his own he pretty much constantly has one on the go

Although I'm a strong believer of staying away from drs is good for your health to so might be that

Yeah, I'm sure they're the picture of health. 🙄🙄🙄

DillDanding · 27/09/2024 13:00

I don’t even know anyone who smokes.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/09/2024 13:02

I work on a supermarket cigarette kiosk and can confirm that there are still plenty of people who buy 20 or 40 cigarettes a day, and even more who buy 30g of rolling tobacco every day or two days.

Prolific smokers are still out there.

To be fair, my aunt was like that in her 60s, but died within 6 weeks of a lung cancer that had spread to her brain aged 68.

She was very fit until that point, none of the breathlessness, cough etc that you might have expected from 50 years of smoking.

Her lungs would have been affected massively so it's silly to say she was fit.

Anyway, if people want to pretend that heavy smokers are fit and healthy, whatever.

user86345625434 · 27/09/2024 13:10

I know/knew 3 committed smokers.
Two of them, a husband and wife are now in their late 80’s, various age related health conditions, but still limping on, still smoking, not much point giving up now i guess.
The other, would light the next fag from the one they were smoking. God knows how many they got through a day. They were also type 1 diabetic, which wasn’t very stable, eventually got kidney and heart failure and died. But lungs were about the last thing to give up!
It makes no sense really, when I can think of many people who lived healthy lives and never got to their 70’s, some not to their 60’s…
I think people who vape are the new chain smokers really - seems to have just replaced fags rather than a tool to quit for most I know.

GingerBeverage · 27/09/2024 13:15

Only the neighbours opposite.
It’s about every half hour they have to go outside.

Edingril · 27/09/2024 13:20

Not in about 30 years

Their lungs apart from anything else will be in a terrible state.

Well she was functionally fit in that she could do anything that she wanted to - silly to dispute in someone you didn't know.

Obviously smoking killed her, in a horrible way that was traumatising to her family. She might easily have had 20 more years as her family is very long lived.

Smoking kills 50% of smokers and long term quit rates are woeful, although I think it helps that fewer people do so it's much less socially acceptable. Much better not to start in the first place though.

Greentreesandbushes · 27/09/2024 13:25

I know people who constantly vape, literally every few breaths, can’t be good. Heavy smokers are less common these days, either dead or vaping.

afreshbouquetofpencils · 27/09/2024 13:26

Yea, a relative. 60 a day. It’s horrible.
