We are on holiday in the canaries.
A family have also brought I presume the husbands father.
This man looks to be in his 80's and is a heavy smoker.

Today the son was going to the shop for a newspaper and more water.
Dad shouted over to his son 'only get the paper from the co-op as I can't read Spanish'

It is the first time he had been abroad.

I don’t understand? What’s the connection between the cigarettes, water, a newspaper, and first trip abroad?

I would have thought most people who aren’t Spanish who holiday in the Canary Islands don’t speak Spanish well enough to read a Spanish language newspaper?

He was on his first holiday abroad.

Eh? I’ve been abroad loads and would assume you can’t get English newspapers from the local shops. I’ve never sought out a newspaper whilst abroad though to be fair.

Co-op? Why would the co-op have English papers more than anywhere else. Any brits aboard resort in the Canaries will have English papers, usually a day late.

He thinks the coop in Spain will sell the same things as a UK coop - so English newspapers.

Spanish coop isn't the same as the Uk. It's like thinking that Lidl in Germany would stock Yorkshire puddings because they do in the UK.

But that's not what he is doing. Coop in the canaries do sell English newspapers. He Appears to know for sure that the coop there sells English newspapers and so is reminding his son to go there rather than another shop which may or not have them.

Weird reaction to this (I thought) quite sweet and funny story, here! I didn't think the OP was being snobby, we've all been confused at things when abroad, and will be confused by more things in our 80s, I guess.
