We are on holiday in the canaries.
A family have also brought I presume the husbands father.
This man looks to be in his 80's and is a heavy smoker.

Today the son was going to the shop for a newspaper and more water.
Dad shouted over to his son 'only get the paper from the co-op as I can't read Spanish'

It is the first time he had been abroad.

The gentleman in question was a lovely person.
He told us that he honestly thought there were co ops all over the world.
Him and his late wife only went to resorts in the UK.
His excitement of seeing something different was nice to see. (Not sure he'd be happy with the faux confusion on here)

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 26/09/2024 19:23

I still don't get it I'm afraid. Nothing faux about it. Just don't get it.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/09/2024 19:24

Oh - it is that he has used 'Co-op' to mean whatever their equivalent is?

Livinginaclock · 26/09/2024 19:25

Why the smoking detail?
You sound quite stuck up.

Alicana · 26/09/2024 19:26

I can’t see any false confusion? I was genuinely confused. I think it was the way it was worded, it just sounded like he asked his son to get him an English newspaper (which on the face of things doesn’t seem an odd thing to ask at a resort holiday favoured by Brits), and nobody knew why you mentioned him smoking, it read like it had some relevance to the story but it wasn’t obvious.

Hope that’s cleared up the perceived false confusion over the perceived false confusion, or added some genuine confusion to the mix!

Wafflefudge · 26/09/2024 19:33

Genuine confusion here too.
And I don't think I've seen English newspapers whilst abroad. Is there a co op where you are? Or are co ops a uk only shop im not sure. But still don't get why that would be funny if he thought there was a coop and there wasn't. 🤔

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 27/09/2024 10:20

Dear me, has Mumsnet really become filled with so many dementors?

IntheVicinity · 27/09/2024 10:34

Gosh, it’s like someone called on the full comic potential of the heavy-smoking, untraveled working classes with their hilarious bon mots around the pool.

It would be much funnier if you encountered Grandpa Oik happily reading El País later on, while dunking his churros.

Chateauneufdu · 27/09/2024 14:06

Still no.

Aposterhasnoname · 27/09/2024 14:13

God there’s some miseries on here. I thought it was funny op.

ButterAsADip · 27/09/2024 15:06

Miserable, or just a different sense of humour, or just different life experiences so can’t fill in the gaps OP left in her story??

splatmouse · 27/09/2024 15:12

A Canary coop. Like a chicken coop.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 27/09/2024 16:03

@ButterAsADip when you look at a thread like this with all these negative answers to a light hearted thing, the answer to your question is yes, 'miserable'.

Bjorkdidit · 27/09/2024 16:15

I've been to the Canaries loads and I've never seen a Co-op. He must mean Spar or Hiperdino. I don't take any notice of newspapers so don't know if they sell them, I'm too busy looking at the cheap booze and green Lays.

Bjorkdidit · 27/09/2024 16:16

splatmouse · 27/09/2024 15:12

A Canary coop. Like a chicken coop.

But much smaller

YellowphantGrey · 27/09/2024 16:18

There aren't any Co-Op Stores in Spain or the Canaries that are the same Co-Op that we have here.

They also sell English newspapers in Spain and on the Canaries in the shops, along with magazines.

The funny part was supposed to be he asked for a Co-Op.

Instead it turned into a pile on because people on here loath any holiday in Europe and don't consider it a holiday or even travel, bless them, unless you've flown 6 hours to a remote destination, where no one speaks English, where you only eat local food and totally immerse yourself in the local way of life for a week.

Anything that doesn't fall under that remit means you're just an untravelled, uncultured slob 😂

Tbh I read it the other way round, that the OP was being a snob about the other people at the pool.

I found this comment snobby towards the OP

Well she must be well-traveled if she’s at a resort in the Canaries

bringbacksideburns · 27/09/2024 16:26

Jesus. What is wrong with sone of you lot? It’s like you are deliberately spoiling for a fight.

People won’t want to post on here at all soon. I was waiting for a comment about the Canaries to pop up 🙄

I reckon they've all been to the Canaries and loved it!

Some people just love to pretend to the better than others online. Gives them a boost in their everyday normal lives

Mumofmarauders · 26/09/2024 18:55

Weird reaction to this (I thought) quite sweet and funny story, here! I didn't think the OP was being snobby, we've all been confused at things when abroad, and will be confused by more things in our 80s, I guess.

I agree .

Itsfridaytralala · 27/09/2024 16:58

I didn't get the joke at first I had to read it a couple of times but then I understood it. Got there eventually 🤣
I think there's been more meanness than I'm used to reading on here. MN is usually ok but this particular thread makes me think what's wrong with some people?

Alicana · 27/09/2024 17:41

There’s lots I find funny that others don’t get or don’t find funny, but I wouldn’t accuse them of being a misery! People just have a different sense of humour.

Without wishing to make myself sound even more ignorant, I still don’t understand the smoking bit part of the joke?

Laiste · 27/09/2024 18:09

Well - i was going to post a funny overheard convo but i daren't 😂

Wafflefudge · 28/09/2024 13:41

How are people saying they don't understand being negative or mean.
Also there's a few people explaining whats funny and they are nearly all saying something different so I'm not sure anyone actually gets it.
