What have they done to the humous?

First they messed with the minced beef now there's no lids on the humous. It's meant to be eaten within 2 days do they think I'm whacking it back in the fridge with no lid on??

@llamali

I started a thread on this yesterday...

This was my rant. I hear you 🤦‍♀️

I have million and one big problems going on in my life so it's nice (!) to know I can still get wound up by the trivial stuff too.

I have bought the Sainsbury's organic hummus for years.

Had some yesterday, went to put it back in the fridge and couldn't find the lid. Looked in the recycling in case I had thrown it out etc but to no avail. Gave up.

Opened another new one today and exactly the same thing happened. Then I realised there is NOW NO LID!!

Just one of those pull off things that don't seal it back up afterwards.

I am absolutely sure it's to do with sustainability and I'm in favour of this kind of thing as a rule but this is just annoying.

It can no longer be stacked in the fridge, it will probably go hard more quickly and frankly is just annoying (I know I can transfer it into one of the many small tubs I don't have the correct fitting lids for but it's just a faff)

Anyone else got any minor packaging grievances?

BurbageBrook · 25/09/2024 21:31

I don't have this problem as I eat a tub of hummus all in one go Blush didn't realise I was unusual!

beasmithwentworth · 25/09/2024 21:33

@jamtarty

Yes there are solutions .. (Tupperware, clingfilm, stretchy lids etc) but my rant (and probably the Op's on this thread) is just that it's needless extra hassle that you don't need!

This isn’t sustainability!

This is a cost saving. And with no warning!

Plus if you're decanting there are 2 lots of houmous left on the side of the container, so less product for you...
And guess what? You'll buy more!
It's marketing pure and simple.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 25/09/2024 21:44

This isn't the supermarkets wanting to save the planet - its about the Plastic Packaging Tax they now have to pay on any plastic that they import and use in their processing. It's around £280 a tonne and I imagine the supermarkets were getting through a lot of it in production processes. Only way round it is to use plastic that includes 30% recycled plastic, hence the flimsy lids......

Which hummus? It definitely needs a lid!

Sainsbury's too

bettbburg · 25/09/2024 21:49

Sainsbury's sell one with a lid - Ramona's Heavenly Jalapeno Houmous

It's good. No idea why that's large font sorry.

Well it was a large font in part on my screen anyway..shrug.

Blueuggboots · 25/09/2024 22:00

I'd just use it as an excuse to eat it all in one go....

beasmithwentworth · 25/09/2024 22:03

@BurntBroccoli @jamtarty

Yeas! Also - it's dependant on 'one' having the right size Tupperware with correct lids.whatever the container it's going to be larger than a normal hummus pot and space is limited in my fridge. Then plus more washing up.. grumble grumble

LikeWeUsedToBe · 25/09/2024 22:05

Use old glass jars. Jam jars pasta sauce etc. They go through the dishwasher and you don't have to buy plastic containers. Glass also dries unlike the horrible plastic that you then have to dry before putting away!

Use a white board marker to write the date on. Or just a permanent marker if you get through enough jars you don't have to reuse that much.

You can also get reusable lids. I just prefer jars as like you mentioned there is a worry things will get knocked over 😂

It's really irritating but the situation with plastics needs to be taken seriously. This is the planet we are leaving to our children

As pp have said its not just hummus, I had a yoghurt delivered that had burst and gone all over my shopping and two other trays below . The driver was understandably not a happy chap.

I save all the glass salsa / dip jars and reuse them labeling them with masking tape and sharpies.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 26/09/2024 07:11

Marmite27 · 25/09/2024 20:46

We bought these op, when the yoghurt we bought stopped putting lids on:

Or the ‘food condoms’ as DH calls them 🫣.

63isMe · 26/09/2024 07:14

FlyHalf · 25/09/2024 17:17

I decant things into jam jars. As soon as any food is obscured with foil in our fridge, it's like an invisibility cloak's been thrown over it.

and then everyone squeamishly ignores it until it's left to me to investigate the mould infested crime scene within

😂😂

LifeofBrienne · 26/09/2024 07:17

Just bought Waitrose hummus. It has changed packaging too but has that plastic film AND a lid on top. I’ll save the lid and hope it fits on top of the Tesco one when I next buy it.
The packaging must all be made in the same factory - I have a big collection of old pots and lids that I use for fridge storage and for DS to take carrot sticks to school - they are all interchangeable from different supermarkets.

OnYourTogs · 26/09/2024 07:26

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/09/2024 18:43

Pop it inside an appropriately-sized food container - it doesn't even have to touch the inside of said container. Sorted!

(I have thousands of things like these. Plus glass containers, jam jars.)

I have a small kitchen with very limited storage, can't keep loads of tupperware

ScottBakula · 26/09/2024 08:02

I wish supermarkets still had proper deli counters, that way you could take your own tub in and get them to fill it .
It could work for loads of stuff like
potato salad ,
Coleslaw
Beetroot
Pickles
Olives
Gherkins
Salsa
Mayo
Salad cream
hp
ketchup
Mustard
Horse raddish
And all the dips.

They could even offer a discount for bringing in your own tubs like coffee shops do if you bring your own cup.
Granted it won't work for delivery's but it's a start and gives you the choice.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 26/09/2024 08:11

Use the lid from a pringles tube? They look about the same size.

Bjorkdidit · 26/09/2024 08:37

Lids from Pringles tubes are good for cans but I don't think they're right for hummus tubs.

Maybe they should use a foil lid instead of the film? Sturdier, so can be covered and held in place by the cardboard for those who are unable to put the open tub in a larger container and properly recyclable, unlike the film.

Or <whispers> people could make their own hummus and freeze in small reusable tubs or jars so no need at all for single use plastics.

Same here. It’s a nightmare.

I just grumpily put tinfoil on my hummus pot.
