What have they done to the humous?

First they messed with the minced beef now there's no lids on the humous. It's meant to be eaten within 2 days do they think I'm whacking it back in the fridge with no lid on??

I don’t understand why it is saving plastic as you could recycle the plastic lids. You mostly can’t recycle the plastic film so that goes into landfill.

LunaLibrarian · 25/09/2024 19:39

We don’t have space to store even more resusable containers for all these pots. We need to keep the original packaging to retain the ingredients information. And as another poster said, half of these are so flimsy they buckle under those reusable stretchy lids.

Buy reusable plastic covers !

Yes! We bought packs of reusable silicone lids that come in 3 different sizes.

It's so annoying! Took me ages to realise I hadn't thrown the lid the other day because I'd forgotten there wasn't one.

It really isn't a small amount of plastic at all across all the pots that get sold. And even if it is, it all adds up. Reducing use is far better than recycling (which doesn't always happen, even when householders do their bit correctly). The tiny inconveniences you mention don't outweigh the pointless impact. That said, I think Sainsbury's still do lids. Perhaps buy one and keep hold of it? I imagine the pots are the same size. get a pen that rubs off to write the date or employ a sniff test? Do people really require so much spoon feeding through life?

Apart from those who have issues decanting (which is a bit of a drip feed), I'm really surprised people are defending the use of single use plastic in favour of a negligible inconvenience.

Loads of people struggle with packaging it shouldn't need declaring. It shouldn't be an exception to packaging design

Sabra is the best and has a lid.

I'll second that. Although it doesn't actually need a lid in my case cos it's that moreish it's gone pretty quick

GameOfJones · 25/09/2024 20:03

Sabra has lids (and is the only hummus worth buying IMO!)

evtheria · 25/09/2024 20:05

Nonbio46 · 25/09/2024 17:15

I either sit a small saucer on the top or decant into a small Tupperware type tub with a lid

Yes, my solutions too (though I'm still annoyed by the new "designs", which surely create more food waste).

llamali · 25/09/2024 16:47

That's what I've done but it's a matter of time before someone accidentally knocks it over in our fridge.

Oh the humanity!

Now imagining little people in your fridge struggling to knock things over Borrower style.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 25/09/2024 20:08

Sainsbury’s have done it too and Waitrose have a nice one made from olive oil with no lid! They go crusty so quickly, it’s horrid! I have these stretchy plastic things from ikea that are like reusable lids that are quite handy though.

Heartbreaktuna · 25/09/2024 20:15

It's very bloody annoying. Also this houmous is tasteless.....

What have they done to the humous?
RightSedFred · 25/09/2024 20:26

That's a pain in the arse. Those hummus pots are an ideal size for me to re-use as containers with my hobby, and they last for ages. I have some that are several years old. Without lids, they will be useless, and I will have to throw them in the recycling.

I'd much rather repurpose these things than chuck them out, and I won't be able to do that any more.😡

OnceUponATimeInTheWest · 25/09/2024 20:30

BurntBroccoli · 25/09/2024 16:57

Yes! Opened a Sainsbury's day before yesterday and no bloody lid!

Tried to squash the cellophane back on and slot into the sleeve but failed!
Apparently it's 30% less plastic (and probably much cheaper for them to produce now they don't have to manufacture lids, plus a lot more food waste!

And it went down in price, right?

BurntBroccoli · 25/09/2024 20:40

MadisonAvenue · 25/09/2024 17:06

It’s not just hummus! It’s large tubs of yoghurt, coleslaw, cream…basically pretty much anything that had a plastic lid before now has a peel back piece of plastic (which doesn’t reseal!).

Yes especially coleslaw ! Who eats a whole tub at once!
I don't want to use clingfilm either!

BurntBroccoli · 25/09/2024 20:41

EternallyDelighted · 25/09/2024 17:12

We have the universal stretchy lids but never seem to have one exactly the right size, if they are too tight they buckle the now very thin tubs. We also don't always have plastic reusable tubs in the right sizes and my (ND) family all seem to have this thing that if it's not in it's original packaging they don't recognise it and it doesn't get used. So I find this very annoying.

Yes I gave those but they don't work with plastic pots unless you put an elastic band round the top. I always think they smell a bit weird too so stopped using mine.

This!

You can buy stickers to put on the tops with the use by / eat by dates. Or tape some paper on the home made lids out of cling film or foil or lids you have bought yourself ( or on the Tupperware you might not be able to purchase anymore )
( I haven't got any stickers myself , but again Amazon might have some !)
It is creating more work ( if you can be bothered with all this !)
I've actually given up buying coleslaw or potato salads etc because of the flimsy tops.

Use masking tape to write on... cheaper too!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2024 20:46

This is doing my head in.

2 weeks ago my Hummus from Sains had a lid. Now it doesn’t. Crazy.

BurntBroccoli · 25/09/2024 20:54

The unlidded Sainsbury's Moroccan style houmous...
Now with a film lid you can't recycle...

It's definitely cheaper for the manufacturer.

What have they done to the humous?

I imagine that film is a right pain for wildlife too

IKEA ÖVERMÄTT food covers work for this

BurntBroccoli · 25/09/2024 21:26

@llamali
Yes very flimsy so could easily end up blowing away before it reaches the incinerator.

I had a look in my plastic pot collection (I reuse these for batch cooking and freezing) and have found a large Greek Yoghurt pot that can contain the whole humous tub. I may need to relabel it clearly though!

jamtarty · 25/09/2024 21:26

This is the second thread about missing hummus lids in two days! Just put it in a Tupperware!
