What have they done to the humous?

First they messed with the minced beef now there's no lids on the humous. It's meant to be eaten within 2 days do they think I'm whacking it back in the fridge with no lid on??

decant! I think a few brands have been like that for a while, I decant to little tupperwares either back into the fridge or into the freezer.

Nemasu · 25/09/2024 17:40

Those large tubs of yoghurt with only a thin film lid are a total hazard in online shopping. So often get punctured and leak contents over everything. I've had to stop buying my favourite brand because of that.

Alicana · 25/09/2024 17:06

But, if you really like the hummus, can’t you just decant into a reusable pot with a lid?

Yes but I'm going to have to buy more tupperware.

It’s not just hummus! It’s large tubs of yoghurt, coleslaw, cream…basically pretty much anything that had a plastic lid before now has a peel back piece of plastic (which doesn’t reseal!).

Coleslaw! Madness

I've often had to dig out a lid out of my left over yoghurt where nobody can be bothered to find the cling film or the foil to make a top for it themselves. It is annoying

Catandsquirrel · 25/09/2024 18:02

The idea is reducing single use plastic. This is a really good thing for the environment. Decant into multi use containers. Glass jars or takeaway containers can be used. Doesn't need to be tupperware specifically if you don't have any.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2024 18:03

Tupperware is now bankrupt they said on the news at the weekend ! Anyone with any might be sitting on a gold mine once it's finally out of circulation ( especially with this lid problem)

It is a good thing for the environment but it's a bad thing in terms of usability for people who find decanting stuff tricky.

Coleslaw rarely has lids now.
Especially the cheaper makes

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/09/2024 18:12

Sabra is like the hummous I grew up on in the ME. More tahini, and much much smoother.

I have to stop myself from eating a tiny a day.

For one thing, you've got to find space in your kitchen to store a variety of different sized storage containers. You've got to faff about decanting, and somehow find a way to remember the date on the original packaging. Then you've got a load of extra washing up of reusable containers to deal with. They need to make decent recyclable packaging. The product needs some kind of lid to begin with, so very little plastic is saved in the scheme of things.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2024 18:27

You can buy stickers to put on the tops with the use by / eat by dates. Or tape some paper on the home made lids out of cling film or foil or lids you have bought yourself ( or on the Tupperware you might not be able to purchase anymore )
( I haven't got any stickers myself , but again Amazon might have some !)
It is creating more work ( if you can be bothered with all this !)
I've actually given up buying coleslaw or potato salads etc because of the flimsy tops.

So now everyone just uses cling film aka disposable plastic. Which totally solves the 'less plastic' issue...

Just decant it into a reusable pot or put the original pot inside a tupperware box?

llamali · 25/09/2024 16:56

Ah I've seen that. Might have to switch if it tastes nice. I'm guessing as it looks a bit posher it's less watery?

Sabra is great, really smooth and creamy. Unfortunately it’s not suitable if you’re boycotting Israeli goods.

halava · 25/09/2024 18:40

I now save the lids of any yogurt/hummus/coleslaw etc. that has one. My collection is a lifesaver for the new flimsy topped pots and one of the lids always fits!

hexsnidgett · 25/09/2024 18:40

I just have little silicone stretchy lids.
I bought them from sainsbury, I don't miss the lids at all.

Pop it inside an appropriately-sized food container - it doesn't even have to touch the inside of said container. Sorted!

(I have thousands of things like these. Plus glass containers, jam jars.)

What have they done to the humous?
TheFormidableMrsC · 25/09/2024 18:43

I use silicone stretch lids for things like this. Cheap and reusable.

MyNameIsBatty · 25/09/2024 18:45

Ramona's hummus is my favourite and has a lid! But I agree that it is a pain, mostly coz I'm lazy and can't be arsed to find pots or cling film to reseal.

It really isn't a small amount of plastic at all across all the pots that get sold. And even if it is, it all adds up. Reducing use is far better than recycling (which doesn't always happen, even when householders do their bit correctly). The tiny inconveniences you mention don't outweigh the pointless impact. That said, I think Sainsbury's still do lids. Perhaps buy one and keep hold of it? I imagine the pots are the same size. get a pen that rubs off to write the date or employ a sniff test? Do people really require so much spoon feeding through life?

Apart from those who have issues decanting (which is a bit of a drip feed), I'm really surprised people are defending the use of single use plastic in favour of a negligible inconvenience.

dropoutin · 25/09/2024 17:30

Ah, glad to see I'm not in fact going mad! Opened a pot of houmus last night, put some on bread and then spent about 10 minutes trying to work out what I'd done with the lid!

The less plastic thing doesn't make sense to me: The lids were recyclable, whereas the film used now I presume isn't (as those sorts of thin flexible plastic normally aren't)?

You can recycle that sort of soft plastic in supermarkets these days (also takes things like crisp packets and cat food pouches). There is usually a collection point just inside the door.

Difficultworkdecision · 25/09/2024 19:35

We’ve got some silicone pot covers for this dilemma!

Nah I pop it inside a tupperware, in the container it came in. DH uses silicone lids but I find them a faff.

I don't have cling film in my house. Haven't for years.
