For example: I just can’t be a passenger in the back of a car. I wouldn’t even contemplate it if the car had no rear doors. The claustrophobia would send me into sheer panic.

Drive !!

TheGoddessFrigg · 24/09/2024 10:00

Flying. I'm generally a confident person. not scared of much but the mere thought of getting on a plane again causes my stomach to plummet. There are places I'd love to go- but the idea of four hours on a plane - I just couldn't 😕

Drive !!

Snap.

On the other hand, I do things that seem to frighten and horrify posters on here without thinking twice — I am perfectly happy public speaking to large numbers, love travelling by myself, am an introvert who has no issues with approaching strangers, or making friends, I pick up languages easily. Even when living somewhere insular and unfriendly, I never regarded the school run as fraught with ‘cliques’ and side-eye.

Yes this is me! Can’t drive (have tried many times) but would (and have) happily speak or perform to a large audience, travel solo, make friends easily, like my body and appearance, speak my mind and say no to things I don’t want to do which seem like rocket science the way some people talk on here and IRL

Same. Can do plenty of other things though! I just have zero coordination and perception of space.

SisterAgatha · 24/09/2024 10:08

Go down an enclosed water slide.

JustFrustrated · 24/09/2024 10:10

See pictures in my mind

Which then means things like interior design, understanding visual concepts etc is impossible for me.

artictern · 24/09/2024 10:11

The tube map 😵‍💫

Well, I’m about to start lessons again, so wish me luck!

Oh, nice to meet other people for whom driving is not possible!

Though I’m starting to take lessons again.

Go down an enclosed water slide.

Strangely, I saw a YouTube video last night of someone getting stuck in one and it's definitely unlocked a new fear for me. The man couldn't get moving again once he'd stopped and then the video ended. 😮

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/09/2024 10:20

Ride a bicycle. I have absolutely no sense of balance.
I also have claustrophobia and did a hypnosis CD (Paul McKenna's Fear of Flying) . It really helped me. He basically tells you that you feel safe like when you were a baby. So I do go on planes and don't freak out when the train goes through a tunnel. I even - just the once - went on the tube in London for a couple of stops, and it was fine., a bit surreal, so i probably won't do it again. But still, if you can get hold of a copy, give it a go!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 24/09/2024 10:22

Go in a lift. I have walked 10 flights of stairs before now, rather than go in a lift. I am claustrophobic yes. If it's glass and sort of open it's not so bad, but otherwise nooooooooooooooooo. The thought of being stuck in an enclosed lift fills me with horror.

coolcahuna · 24/09/2024 10:23

Ride a bike. Just can't do it. Can also no longer drive a manual car after too many years of automatic.

When I was a kid, years ago, I saw a woman get stuck in an enclosed water slide. It took alot of people to get her unstuck. I felt sorry for her because it was see through so she basically had the whole place staring at her😬

Cattery · 24/09/2024 10:25

I don’t love driving but I manage to do it. I’m not great at parking. Couldn’t parallel park. Couldn’t live somewhere where you have to park on the street. I always look in amazement at all the cars lined up and think how did they do that?? I’d have to park on the end

motherofbees · 24/09/2024 10:25

Not a major thing but I hate bridges and I can't walk over anything where I can see the ground underneath. Even in a hotel that had a glass floor panel exposing the ancient underground plumbing that was only a few feet below I had to walk round it.

wizzler · 24/09/2024 10:26

Stand in one leg. I had a physio exercise where I had to stand on one leg and catch a ball. Couldn't do it. Kids thought I was having a laugh as I floundered round the garden.

Cattery · 24/09/2024 10:26

@motherofbees Oh God no. Couldn’t walk over that.

I can’t act calmly around a wasp. In my defence, I am allergic and last time I was stung I passed out in my car (thankfully I managed to pull over first). I carry an epi pen.
How people can sit there and let a wasp buzz around them, I don’t know.
I make a holy show of myself in public when wasps are around, but I can’t help it.

But how did she get stuck? They are the same size all the way down, so really the only way you can get stuck is at the top?

Biggirlnow · 24/09/2024 10:30

Get drunk. I hate the very thought. I'm tee-total and can't stand being around drunk people either.

It was one of those where you're on a rubber ring so there's jets that push you along. she was quite overweight so she stalled and the jet wasn't powerful enough to push her along

Singleandproud · 24/09/2024 10:32

I haven't parallel parked a car since I passed my test a decade or so ago. I struggle with spatial awareness at the best of times and just find a spot I can drive into.

Serencwtch · 24/09/2024 10:33

I hate speaking on the phone to the point I often can't speak at all. Like a phobia. Get feelings of severe anxiety - racing heart, shaking, dry mouth & then just freeze.

I've been like that since childhood. Not exactly sure what it is I'm scared of & often ridiculed for it especially GP surgery.
