Things you are just unable to/just cant do and others think you’re being silly

For example: I just can’t be a passenger in the back of a car. I wouldn’t even contemplate it if the car had no rear doors. The claustrophobia would send me into sheer panic.

Swim in the sea. I’m terrified of what might be beneath me eg jellyfish or whatever.

I do however love scuba diving, I think because I can see what’s around me.

Windmillsofyourminds · 24/09/2024 10:35

Escalators, deep tube lines and open bridges give me panic attacks. I can just manage enclosed lifts but not open ones. It is getting worse with age.

Cattery · 24/09/2024 10:36

I couldn’t walk up close to a big metal ship in dock. The sheer size would overwhelm me. My legs would go all cold.

I hate speaking on the phone to the point I often can't speak at all. Like a phobia. Get feelings of severe anxiety - racing heart, shaking, dry mouth & then just freeze.

I've been like that since childhood. Not exactly sure what it is I'm scared of & often ridiculed for it especially GP surgery.

I am autistic and phone speaking was a major nemesis for me. I used to write scripts to follow, with possible responses people might give and how I would respond to those.
It was time consuming but enabled me to get over my fear in time. I’m still not 100% comfortable and would never ring someone for a chat, but I can make appointments etc.

I can’t act calmly around a wasp. In my defence, I am allergic and last time I was stung I passed out in my car (thankfully I managed to pull over first). I carry an epi pen.
How people can sit there and let a wasp buzz around them, I don’t know.
I make a holy show of myself in public when wasps are around, but I can’t help it.

Edited

Im allergic to bee and wasp stings too, but you’re far more likely to be stung if you’re flapping about.

Drive !!

Yes, this was me.

I’m 40 next year and finally passed last year 🥴 2nd time lucky but had so many lessons over 8 years, I’ve lost count. I kept stopping & starting lessons, as I just couldn’t get the hang of it - then one day, something just clicked & it all made sense.

Edit: I still don’t particularly love it & you won’t ever find me on the motorway!

PortiasBiscuit · 24/09/2024 10:37

I cannot tell my left from right without really taking time to think, this is despite losing my left breast to a mastectomy 7 years ago. I genuinely have to touch my chest and think “ dead boob means left”.
Drives my DH potty.

Petesbowtie9 · 24/09/2024 10:37

I would genuinely rather walk around my town naked then get in the car and drive ( even though passed my test a few years back )

GameOfJones · 24/09/2024 10:37

Swim in the sea.

This is mine too. I don't mind paddling in the sea, but swimming anywhere where I can't see what is beneath me fills me with absolute dread.

anxietyaardvark · 24/09/2024 10:38

Also autistic and can't speak on phone or open letters.

Not in my experience. Every time I’ve been stung, it’s when I’ve not realised a wasp is there and they’ve landed on me and stung me. I’ve never been stung from flapping and legging it.

ImNunTheWiser · 24/09/2024 10:38

Swim.
Had my head pushed under the water, as a small child, by a swimming teacher of all people (it was the seventies, things were different then 🙄). I’ve had all sorts of well meaning, kind, gentle people try to teach me since then but the sheer terror sets in pretty rapidly. It’s probably my only regret tbh.

Go down an enclosed water slide.

Yes! Me too!! Or tube slides at playgrounds, even when I was a child

I can’t do this either! When I try, some weird gland in my neck puffs up and freaks me out and I have to stop.

isthismylifenow · 24/09/2024 10:46

I can't go on a roller coaster or even a big wheel.

I also can't look down to the ground from a height.

I think it's PTSD from something that happened when I was younger.

No issues in a plane though, as my feet are firmly planted.

They are just temperamental bastards.

Waitingfordoggo · 24/09/2024 10:48

I can’t reliably catch something that is thrown to me. I might sometimes succeed but purely by fluke. My hand-eye coordination for catching is terrible.

I used to have exactly the same problem. Can remember having a panic attack in Primark because the escalator was so steep ,I couldn’t cross footbridges over busy roads stand on high balconies ,Iwould actually go dizzy and legs like jelly!
Interestingly I have got better in the last 10 years so I wonder if it was just life being stressful then .

MingingTiles · 24/09/2024 10:49

Work out which is my side of the bed in a strange room.

DadJoke · 24/09/2024 10:53

Go on any fairground ride which goes round and round. I turn green.

Lincoln24 · 24/09/2024 10:54

Play a musical instrument. I have really poor hand eye coordination and a very poor ear for music and rhythm. I can't sing a note either. Come from a musical family so it was a disappointment!

NCagainandagainandagain · 24/09/2024 10:54

Casually ignore wasps/ bees . Sorry I just run ! I have even stopped my car and jumped out when a wasp came in through the window…did I look to see if a car was likely to hit me ,I don’t think so ,I was so terrified!

Daschund · 24/09/2024 10:54

Park, but my car will do it itself. It's a game changer, getting in spaces I never could.

Mine's go on any funfair/theme park ride full stop! I used to be an adrenaline junkie, then suddenly a few years ago I went on the big one at Blackpool (something I'd done many times before) and I'd never been so terrified in my life! Since then I've realised it extends to pretty much any ride 😂

Also, I can't whistle. I just can't
