Blackpool or London for a weekend away ?

ringisly · 23/09/2024 13:25

I know they are worlds apart but we are thinking of either going to Blackpool for two nights on Saturday till Monday or London
Blackpool because of illuminations or London to see a show on Saturday night and then some touristy things Sunday.

It's 3 of us
Me and partner and 14 year old daughter

What do you think ?

Do you have a lot of weekends away! I ask because I quite enjoyed Blackpool in an ironic way. I do go away quite a lot though. If it was my only mini break I would have preferred something a bit nicer.

Bjorkdidit · 23/09/2024 13:44

Well it would depend which is easier to get to, which you'd prefer, what the weather forecast in either place is, budget, because Blackpool is likely to be cheaper and the price and availability of shows.

That's how I'd decide rather than asking Mumsnet, which is akin to tossing a coin that's heavily skewed towards London.

Twiglets1 · 23/09/2024 13:48

If you like illuminations why not wait until closer to Christmas when the Christmas lights are up in central London and you can combine seeing the lights with going to a show.

A bit more exciting than going to Blackpool I imagine. But considerably more expensive with the cost of London hotels and theatre tickets.

ringisly · 23/09/2024 13:50

Well weirdly the show we want to see is playing in our local city see but we thought it would be so much nicer to see it in London
So the ticket cost is the same

I'd take a 14 year old to London, she's too young to enjoy Blackpool ironically but not old enough to drink! Also the weather could make it seriously bleak in Blackpool.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 23/09/2024 13:58

Seriously? Why are you even asking? The illuminations are not very exciting at all. You sit in crawling traffic for about four miles and have little lights overhead to look at. When you get to Gynn Square, it's a bit better as you can park (somewhere) and walk the mile to Bispham and look at the mural displays.

I have walked the illuminations more times than I can remember and would pick London every single time.

The idea to combine London with the Christmas lights displays is perfect. Please do this instead. The idea of walking around a grim and grey Blackpool for two days is depressing me and I'm not even going!

samedifferent · 23/09/2024 14:06

If you can manage the extra cost I would absolutely choose London, unless you have already visited a lot and have never been to Blackpool. ( Although even then I would probably still go for London)

ringisly · 23/09/2024 14:07

Well it's only going to be a extra £140 for London and we haven't been in 10 years
We were in Blackpool for two years running for illuminations
Obviously the cost of things in London will be higher

Team Blackpool here! Release your inner child and have a fun weekend. I’m old and I still love it. My happy place.

Really? Where’s your miserable place?

Cas112 · 23/09/2024 14:27

The illuminations are really overrated

KenAdams · 23/09/2024 14:42

Are the Blackpool tourist board spamming MN or something?

Definitely London!

TealTraybake · 23/09/2024 14:44

Blackpool is a dump. London is one of the best cities in the world. No brainer..

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 23/09/2024 14:44

London. You can find cheaper hotels out a bit (eg Earl's Court).

SauvignonBlonk · 23/09/2024 14:44

I hate London but I’d still go there in preference to Blackpool.

Seriously, Blackpool has nothing on London.

London. There is no conceivable reason for a sane person to go to Blackpool.

samedifferent · 23/09/2024 16:21

Enjoy, I'm sure you will
