Milk - until what age?

How long did you regularly (as in at least once twice daily) give your DC milk as a drink?

OP posts:
Atishooo · 22/09/2024 10:51

Only while they had bottles, they’ve never drank milk out of a cup. Although one of mine had a night time bottle for quite a while.

My DC would never ask for milk as a drink as they don’t like it, neither do I.

bluecomputerscreen · 22/09/2024 10:55

never as a drink past infant milk.
except a hot chocolate on very cold days.

Spomb · 22/09/2024 10:56

Same, only in bottles.

I’m an adult that has milk before bed still 😂

Olika · 22/09/2024 10:58

My DD is 2y5m and she still asks for milk a few times a day, definitely in morning and evening. I am not bothered about it as I come from a country trying to where people often drink milk at meals.

ButterAsADip · 22/09/2024 10:59

Until recently my kids had milk regularly and they’re 6&9. 9 year old has switched to a decaf tea at bedtime and 6 year old has a bottle of water by his bed. Throughout the day generally water but they don’t seem to drink much all! DD is 2.5 and still has milk in a beaker at bed and naptime.

SparkyBlue · 22/09/2024 10:59

My five and nine year olds still love a glass of milk. It goes in phases. On occasions I feel like I need to keep a cow in the house to keep us going.

One of my grown up DC will regularly drink milk.
I gave them a choice of water or milk probably until they were about 6.

AncientBallerina · 22/09/2024 10:59

I still drink milk (I’m in my 50s) 😁
I think my kids drank milk well into primary school. Neither do now apart from hot chocolate. When I was growing up my whole family drank milk in the evening with dinner. Milk is a great source of calcium for growing kids - I wouldn’t stop unless they started to not like it which often happens.

InTheRainOnATrain · 22/09/2024 10:59

My 7YO still drinks it because she likes it, my 3YO isn’t a big fan and will only have it on cereal and has been that way since we ditched the bottles at 12MO. They can get what they need from dairy in their diet but it’s a healthy drink so really comes down to whether or not they want to drink it!

WutheringMights · 22/09/2024 11:00

Both of mine had milk in a bottle upon wake up every morning until they were just over 2.
It was just habit but I quite liked the idea of them having about 6oz of full fat milk first thing. Fluid & calories etc

99RedBallonz · 22/09/2024 11:00

My 6 year old likes a glass of milk with his breakfast each day. The little one has always refused milk so just has water or juice

MillshakePickle · 22/09/2024 11:02

A glass of milk until around 7 with breakfast and dc may have cereal in the morning but that's rare and occasionally at 10 may ask for a glass with a pudding.

GoodVibesHere · 22/09/2024 11:02

One of my DC had a big cup of bedtime milk until about 11 or 12yrs old, then it became a hot chocolate at bedtime. I'm the same, I do love a warm milky drink before bed.

justasoul · 22/09/2024 11:07

DD still has at least one cup of milk a day, she’s 15. She likes to have it with her meals so sometimes I send some in her lunchbox, sometimes she’ll have it at dinner time. She’s amused many restaurant/pub waiters by ordering a glass of milk when she was little Grin (v often it was not on the menu but she has never been refused!)

RockAndRollerskate · 22/09/2024 11:09

I don’t worry too much about it as they eat obscene amounts of cereal with milk on

Fiery30 · 22/09/2024 11:18

I am an adult, I have never stopped having milk as my primary drink in the morning. Infact my mother stopped adding sugar to my milk when I was about 7-8 and I have still stuck with that. Don't see why you have to stop when the child turns a certain age.

Cuwins · 22/09/2024 11:21

I have been wondering this. DD is 2.5, she has a dairy allergy so has oat milk which I give her in the morning and before bed. Lately though she hasn't been drinking it much however I'm concerned about her calcium intake without it as she doesn't eat much other fake dairy stuff.
However I put her vitamin in her morning milk so if she isn't drinking it I really need to rethink so she gets that

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/09/2024 11:22

When we stippled bottles at one year old. None of us drink milk, husband has it on cereal but the kids and I have yogurt and granola.

mogtheexcellent · 22/09/2024 11:25

DD10 only drinks milk, hot choc and water. So at least one or two cups a day for milk.

Had a milk with her mac ds lunch yesterday. If with friends, she will ask for a milk shake but only have a quarter of it.

Scorpion84 · 22/09/2024 11:27

My daughter is 2 and I offer her some milk in a cup before bed . She drinks most if but I don't think she's overly bothered .

Tiredofthewhirring · 22/09/2024 11:28

Mine never drank cows milk, it's a weird post war obession.

They had cheese and yoghurt as part of a normal diet and BF until 18 months

ImNotYourMonstera · 22/09/2024 11:31

@Fiery30 why did your mother give you sugared cow milk?

Fiery30 · 22/09/2024 11:37

ImNotYourMonstera · 22/09/2024 11:31

@Fiery30 why did your mother give you sugared cow milk?

It's very common in my country to give children milk with sugar.

reluctantbrit · 22/09/2024 11:46

Until DD said she doesn't like pure milk anymore, I think she was 14. She will still drink the milk from her Weetos bowl but that's basically chocolate milk.
Otherwise she loves hot chocolate and the Shaken Udder milkshakes.

DH and I drink milk to certain meals and always offered DD one as well.

It's weird to put an age limit to it. Unless milk replaces solid food, I wouldn't worry if they drink it.
