Non alcoholic evening drinks (for adults!)

Probably seems a daft question but what do you drink of an evening that doesn't contain alcohol? Going into winter it feels like red wine season will be upon us soon and the days of something fizzy with ice are perhaps behind me with the summer. As well as the benefit of not slipping into evenings with alcohol I'd like to avoid the extra calories and lose a little weight. I do like grapefruit juice with tonic but not sure I can drink it every night. Also ruling out flavoured teas thanks to overdoing those during pregnancy and not getting over it 🤢🤢🤢

I love elderflower cordial, a soda water, cucumber and mint. Not very wintery but it's lovely and refreshing and low in sugar!

Sparkling water with ice and lemon or lime
Fruit cordial
Tonic water
Fruit juice
Iced tea
Schloer do quite a nice non alcoholic sparkling wine

Fruit and herbal tea when the weather gets cold enough.

There are often winter spice versions available.

(Edit - I see you’ve ruled flavoured teas out, but might help others! How about non-alcoholic versions of spirits?)

Bud Zero

AsparagusGirl · 21/09/2024 21:08

I have a nice tonic water with fancy garnishes. DH bought me a tin of g&t garnishes- pink peppercorns, juniper berries, star anise, cardamon pods, rose petals etc. So I throw a few of those in maybe with angostura bitters.
I do like a herbal tea too but understand if you've been put off in pregnancy!

helpfulperson · 21/09/2024 21:08

Lidls do a non alcoholic mulled wine. Not sure on calorie count.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 21/09/2024 21:10

Water .

Honestly, everything else is a glass of disappointment.

Save the kcal and pounds for a decent red at the weekend.

Teajenny7 · 21/09/2024 21:10

Ginger beer with cranberry juice.
Or warm cranberry with spices

Icanttakethisanymore · 21/09/2024 21:11

Ginger beer
kombucha
orange juice and tonic water
fizzy water and any juice / cordial
AF beer (don’t bother with the wine, it’s vile in my experience)

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 21/09/2024 21:11

Goodrays CBD drinks

GiddyRobin · 21/09/2024 21:15

Lots of herbal teas! I've got a bit of an obsession, and have a few slightly excessive tea sets. Jasmine is my favourite. That's not very helpful if you don't like them though!

I quite like kombucha, too, but not the stuff in cans. The ones in glass bottles are nice. Earl Grey with lemon or orange. Hot lemon and honey water is nice, so is hot orange and honey. Just boil up lemons/orange and when the water is tasty pour into a cup with honey.

There are a few non-alcoholic wines that aren't too bad. I don't mind the Nosecco stuff. Seedlip makes a nice cocktail. I'm yet to find a red that tastes nice out of the bottle, but they do make for quite nice mulled wine if you make one up from scratch. I don't like the pre-made mulled wines.

TheChosenTwo · 21/09/2024 21:19

I only drink water! Everything else is either sugary or artificial.
Happy to be considered boring 😂
I love an alcoholic drink but mostly stick to just plain water.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 21/09/2024 21:21

I’ve recently discovered Botivo, it’s an interesting flavour I’m not sure I could describe but it’s a grown up mocktail ie not just sweet and fruity

muffledvoice · 21/09/2024 21:21

Peppermint cordial and water either over ice or with warm water or a splash in a cup of tea or hot chocolate!

FiveLoadsFourLiftsThreeMeals · 21/09/2024 21:21

We mostly drink tea in the evening (not flavoured, just regular Yorkshire tea) but that's probably not the suggestion you're looking for!

We used to drink probably more alcohol than was healthy on Friday and Saturday evening and switched to alcohol free beers which can be a nice change - lots of alcohol free beers are really good, and some are more wintery (our local microbrewery does seasonal beers including alcohol free ones). Unfortunately alcohol free wines don't seem as good and we rarely have wine any more. Obviously there are still calories in alcohol free beers.

I don't really ever drink anything other than water, black coffee, tea, (alcohol free) beer and wine... my teen and young adult children still sometimes drink hot chocolate - you can get low calorie ones but I don't think those are as nice as proper hot chocolate made with milk and whipped cream 😜.

Some people drink things like hot ribena or apple or cranberry juice topped up with the same volume of hot water, that might be nice in winter.

Oldraver · 21/09/2024 21:23

If you can get hold of it and don't mind the sugar, Bensons do a mulled apple, lovely warmed up

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2024 21:27

I don't drink any alcohol anyway but if I wanted something nice it'd be either soda and Roses Lime or Fentimans Ginger Beer and Roses.

I bought some mixer tins of Britvic soda water which are nice (bought for DDs Aperol Spritz)

ElleWoods15 · 21/09/2024 21:29

Bottlegreen do a lovely ginger cordial- lovely with fizzy water. Perfect for an autumn evening!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 21/09/2024 21:31

M&S do a nice pre- mixed alcohol free gin and tonic.

In the evening, I usually have a caffeine free tea or ginger tea. Also hot chocolate with 80% dark chocolate, but that's not going to fit your lower calories requirement.

elastamum · 21/09/2024 21:31

Rose lemonade or elderflower kombucha. Peach iced tea. Lots of fruit or herbal teas

SwimmingFree · 21/09/2024 21:33

I like kombucha and also trip cbd drinks.

AngelicKaty · 21/09/2024 21:35

I used to have a 150ml glass of wine with my dinner every single night, without fail, and like you, I wanted to save the "empty" calories to lose weight. (I also wanted to give my liver a break because, although I've never drunk to excess, I never had a night off from my one glass - OK, very occasionally, two!).
I now routinely drink non-alcholic Gin and Tonic and Rum and Coke:

  • 50ml measure of Gordon's Pink 0% Gin plus slimline tonic = 9 calories
  • 50ml measure of Captain Morgan's 0% Spiced Rum plus Coke Zero = 1 calorie
They both taste like the real thing - just minus the "kick". I did try some 0% wines which were absolutely VILE - they all had exactly the same "chemically" taste, regardless of the colour! I do still have the occasional glass of wine if I really fancy it (or if we go out and the available options aren't to my taste) but that's the exception rather than the rule.
