Wondering if it's just me who has a brain that retains truly useless information like jingles and entire scripts to adverts from yonks ago

For me its

  • 122 years of hovis
  • legit every word to the cheer up ever green frog singing to the tune of daydream believer
  • accrington stanley milk
  • the entire poem from Comfort Vaporesse
  • orange Wednesdays.... 'baby, we should go every Wednesday!'

Honestly would be way better if I could switch some memory cells for something actually useful 😂

Anyone else?!

Anyone remember something about ‘the piggies are waiting - figaro figaro - waiting for you…’ I think they were Piggy Banks for kids from a bank?

BoilingHotand50something · 21/09/2024 18:05

My favourite ever;

have a happy Christmas, at Woolworths
join us on our Christmas shopping spree
have a happy Christmas, at Woolworths
Woolworths Prices it’s the place to be

i seem to remember it was one of those mega adverts that went on for 5 minutes

(I miss Woolworths)

The NatWest piggy banks! My dad refused to let me open an account because the interest rate was no good. A complete set of the piggy banks is now worth quite a lot 😃

Oh thank you! I obviously remembered the lyrics all wrong!

Theoldcuriosityshop · 21/09/2024 19:29

Well I'm so old I remember times before adverts when we only had one channel. One of the first I remember was for Murray Mints.
Murray mints, Murray mints
Too good to hurry mints.
Bet no one else remembers this.

AtmosAtmos · 21/09/2024 19:53

@Theoldcuriosityshop interesting - did they always (was it BBC?) build in gaps like they do now of trailers or which channel you are on so you can make a cuppa/go to the toilet?

My favourite of that was the BBC fuzzy 2s that jumped like the little toy dogs

Thevelvelletes · 21/09/2024 19:56

Cresta...it's frothy man.

The gaps on BBC used to be:

  • static picture advertising the next show with music in background
  • static list of upcoming programmes with music in background
  • the (famous) test card
  • nothing - there were period when it was off altogether

@Sethera yes! I had the opening an account pig - he was called Woody. I can't recall the other names but the last pig was Sir Nathaniel Westminster.

It started

We are the Westminster Piggies - a fa-mi-leee
Of beautiful porcelain pigs

and then there was something about a 'wobbly wall chart' and a 'wonderful bundle of loot'.

I can't look on YouTube now as the husband is watching a film but I bet it's on there.

I've seen Woodys at car boot sales but not the elder pigs - I think you had to invest a fair whack to receive Sir Nathaniel.

Oh yes, I found the girl on the test card a bit creepy, just looked at it again and it’s the clown,

Sethera · 21/09/2024 21:00

£200 for a full set of piggies on eBay!

Car Finder
If you've got a car to sell and you want to sell it quick
Then we are the people to advertise with
You pay once only then we take a photograph
And advertise until it's sold
Hurry hurry!

Might have been a radio ad late 80s but why is it still in my head? 😂

Frosties: They're gonna taste greeeeaaat! Even the man in the crate, well he knows they taste great!

merryhouse · 21/09/2024 21:49

I bet he drinks Carling Black Label
...nah, he doesn't wash his underpants
(a riff on the Levi's ad)

and I remember when I was quite little there was one with a senior detective summing up what the perpetrator had done (it involved some shinning up a wall, istr) and asking if anyone had any thoughts. One bright spark said "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label" at which they all laughed, and the supervisor said "well, it's a start lad, it's a start" and drew a face with a smile on it

Peter Davison and the Smash aliens and "you can put the dinner on, I'll be home in twenny minutes!"

oh, the come home to a Real Fire (buy a cottage in Wales)

JaneIves · 21/09/2024 21:51

Flip top head (toothpaste)

It's in the saaaaand! The AA

I used to read my dad's copy of Punch, for the cartoons, and remember

the Jeeves and Wooster Croft Original ads - very jolly little stories, which I suspect encouraged me to read Wodehouse years later and definitely left me with the impression that Croft Original is Posh Sherry. I remember explaining this to our erstwhile vicar, who is both younger and more middle-class than me and who was puzzling over the fact that her [in-laws? I think] always bought CO at Christmas

The gorgeous fantastical pictures (castles in the air, flying pigs etc) accompanying "it's about as likely as a duff bottle of Hirondelle" which is fascinating for the sheer fact that Not Being Crap Wine was an advertising point, and also reminds me that at the time I didn't know what duff meant and spent a while imagining that a Duff Bottle was a thing...

Wanda had a Honda; Priscilla had a Porsche; Stephanie Lee's got a PhD, and drives a Colt, of course!

bendmeoverbackwards · 22/09/2024 02:35

Great thread!

Love all the Maureen Lipman ‘Beattie’ BT ads. You got an ology? You’ll have to have one of your turns (with Bernard Bresslaw), it’s not what you call all the rage (Richard Wilson)

farleysrusks · 22/09/2024 05:58

R White’s lemonade ad, with Elvis Costello’s dad as the Secret Lemonade Drinker.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/09/2024 09:18

Do you have a copy of Fly Fishing by J. R. Hartley? Yellow pages ad.

That was such a sweet ad. I was at secondary school when that was on and I remember us liking it and repeating the words.
