Not where I lived.
I just checked the unemployment rate in the 1980s
In 1984 the rate was 12.9% a record high.
This year's rate is 4.4%

Yes, where I grew up it peaked at just under 18% in 1987. Add in various industrial disputes and strikes, and that equates to a lot of poverty.

A tragic number of people lost their jobs in the North and there are parts that have never really recovered.

In the first half of the 80's when I still lived at home, we didn't have a phone in the house. I spent ages in the pay phone down the street. Any arrangements made to go out couldn't be changed because no one could get in touch with me.
