Help. What have I done to my knee.

HelpMePlease32 · 16/09/2024 17:23

Was just messing about with DP and he was chasing me into the bedroom, I knocked my self on the end of the bed and my knee did kind of a weird twist which was so painful! It felt like something teared!! And made a loud crack! Been writing in agony for a few mins probs from the shock. It's now very sore and painful. Nothing looks to be out of place. I can bend it and straighten it and put weight on it but it's very painful and feels like it might give way. I can already feel it starting to swell. What the bloody hell have I done? Dp says it doesn't warrant A and E as it's obvs not broken. What shall I do and what could it be.

RICE

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

If you can only do one thing, ice it.

Dilbertian · 16/09/2024 17:35

With a cold pack, not with sugarpaste.

Arghgerroffyabastard · 16/09/2024 17:37

If you heard and felt structural damage happen then you need it looking at. If you can’t get an appt with your gp tomorrow, you need A&E.

Yes to RICE.

Possibly torn meniscus or ligament damage.

If it’s really bad I would try to get it checked. Do you have an Urgent Treatment Centre or similar near you? If not, I wouldn't rule out A&E. just because there isn’t a broken bone, that doesn’t mean there isn’t damage inside your knee. You could phone 111 and see what they advise.

underused · 16/09/2024 17:46

I tore my cruciate ligament and it sounds very much like that. You need to be seen by a doctor. Do you have a minor injuries?

Also - don't get fobbed off. I was told it was "just a sprain" and walked around on it for months (regularly giving way!)

BlackStarryNight · 16/09/2024 17:48

twisting injury, an audible noise and subsequent feeling of instability is an absolutely textbook ACL injury. Go to A&E at a quiet time or an urgent care centre if you have one near you. There's a fairly standard test they do to assess the movement of the knee but likely would confirm the extent of any damage (and check for meniscus damage) with an MRI

OooohAhhhh · 16/09/2024 17:54

I suggest A&E as you probably won't be able to drive tomorrow, it will probably get worse as time goes on.
I dislocated my knee and it popped back into place and it swelled like a melon. I couldn't bend it tho and literally had to drag my leg behind me. I was on morphine and had to have keyhole knee surgery. I was in hospital for a week after recovering, and then was on crutches for some time after.
I really underestimated what I had done and the pain afterwards as the hours went by was unbearable.
I'm not saying you've dislocated it but it needs looking at asap.

We do t have UTC, just a and E. I'll get the kids fed and in bed and see how I am after. The more I walk the easier it is, but it's very sore especially on the inner side and my knee cap has doubled on size and very fat and spongey lol

At the rime ot kind of felt like something came out and then went back in again. Is this a possibility??

OooohAhhhh · 16/09/2024 17:59

@HelpMePlease32 yes, it's called a partial dislocation (not a full one as it immediately popped itself back in) which is what I did.
The swelling sounds like how mine was.
I also lost the use of all of my thigh muscle after which is what the dislocation did. I had to have physiotherapy to build my muscle up again.
So sorry as I don't mean to scare you but you shouldn't just ignore it.

I think this might be what has happened. I did feel it it felt more of a twist but here's no visible dislocation, not hung looks out of place etc

It tore my knee ligaments, so it depends on what you have damaged.

OooohAhhhh · 16/09/2024 18:03

Right as rain now tho, although the doctor said my knee will always be weaker because of what I did and sometime it feels it.

Based on my experience as a clinician, I can tell you that your injury, which involved a twisting motion, is highly likely to have resulted in a meniscal tear. Most meniscal tears heal on their own within six to eight weeks, or at least the symptoms improve or resolve completely. It's unlikely that you have a ligament tear, as that would require quite a strong force. As I suspect there might be pain and swelling, you can also take some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen. As everyone has suggested, you should follow the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). I recommend taking it easy for a few days, and obviously, if the pain progressively worsens, consider consulting a GP or a private physiotherapist.

maimeo · 16/09/2024 18:20

Rest, ice, elevate this evening and see how it is in the morning. Good luck

Thank you. Do you mind if i ask a question, the main is now a really dull and deep ache, the main is now in my knee primarily but feels like it's going up to my hip and thigh with a dull ache sensation. Is this normal lol because I'm starting to worry a bit x

I had this injury after falling down stairs an hour before i was leaving for a holiday flight. I made the flight but I was in agony for the whole week on holiday and wasnt any better on my return. Only now 3 months later it feels almost normal again.. agonising pain. Get it seen to..

HelpMePlease32 · 16/09/2024 19:48

So I did the 111 online and it said see a GP today or tomorrow so I'm guessing I'll ring GP in the morning. It's absolutely killing but not at rest, only with movement. And it's very swollen and spongey. I've fallen down a Google rabbit hole and convinced myself the injury will form a blood clot.
Send help 😂

Ruptured cruciate ligament?

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 16/09/2024 19:58

I fell down the stairs a couple of years ago. I felt my knee ‘tear’ (blinding pain) and broke my leg when I landed. Knee turned out to be a partially ruptured ACL and honestly, that was far worse pain wise and recovery wise than the broken leg! Definitely get it checked as soon as you can. You may need a scan to see the damage. It’s not just broken bones that hurt!

Goatblu · 16/09/2024 20:02

I'm currently nursing a meniscal tear and a ligament strain. I ended up going to MIU as after a few days the pain became unbearable and I couldn't walk.

I've got crutches, painkillers and some pretty heavy strapping (courtesy of the physio I saw today).

Don't leave it. It might feel worse in a couple of days.

OooohAhhhh · 16/09/2024 20:23

I hope you are feeling ok OP. Are you taking anything for the pain?
Do you have plans for tomorrow?

I've taken ibuprofen and paracetamol. The main is more the inner side of my knee now and feels bruised/swollen. I've got full range of motion just very sore. It almost feels like I've had a big knock to it.

OooohAhhhh · 16/09/2024 21:01

Well I literally had no motion with mine, it was like I was dragging around a dead leg, it was awful. I had to go down some flights of stairs too, I had to get a friend to help me.
Just thinking about it now is bringing it all back!
Anyway it doesn't sound as bad as mine which can only be a good thing I guess!
Do update tomorrow and in the mean time rest up and I hope you feel ok 😊
