I think we need to listen to the reasons why a man like Trump is so popular. What isn't being dealt with in the political arena that has led to a walking ego with not a lot going on between his ears becoming so popular? It's not scary that he's had attempted assassinations, it is scary that a man like him can become so popular.

Maybe because, despite his shortcomings, a lot of people still find him and his political views a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

I can't believe some of the comments on this thread.

This is a person. A human. A Father. A husband.

You can disagree with his opinions but to act like being a shitty person means you deserve to die is gross.

So we justify murdering people with different opinions now??

I know disgusting isn’t it. Fucking free speech is on the decline it seems. Don’t like someone’s views? Instead of trying to defend them you want them dead. Nice.

Pythag · 15/09/2024 22:59

His ear was literally shot! How could he have staged that? Are you stupid?!

Yes, really stupid and desperate. They hate Trump to death but can’t believed some other hater a bit more cuckoo can attempt to kill him.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/09/2024 23:01

I hate this sort of comment. It’s a worse version of “childless cat lady” but I guess you intended that. Dehumanising people who don’t have children.

Anyway, I’m guessing he’s going to have some concerns around the security detail. A former president, running again, should have better security surely.

I love Mumsnet for this batshittery.

Or Trump staging something...again

This 100%!

After the first assassination attempt Trump's popularity rocketed 🤔

daisychain01 · 15/09/2024 22:59

This is a person. A human. A Father. A husband.

a worthy and laudable reminder.

except, forgive me for the massive eye roll

he's a felon, a cheat, was accountable for the deaths of many people during the insurrection, took weeks to conceded defeat in the last Presidential election, behaved disgracefully to the UK monarch, Queen Elizabeth, walking in front of her and literally blocking the light from her, talked about grabbing a woman by the pussy, a tax fraud, a complete embarrassment to his family, and cannot string a sensible coherent sentence together.

and this is a candidate for the US presidency. How the hell did that happen!?

Yeah but, remember to be sad if he is assassinated.

Your post and others like them is part of the problem. You're insulting a large number of people and dismissing their views and concerns out of what, hatred, fear, ignorance, indifference?

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle. - SunTzu

You know when you're parenting a small child, and they have a tantrum because the pencil is red and they want blue, but then blue isnt good enough and now its all gone wrong.

Some humans are like that, their 'views and concerns' are like that tantrum. A good society shuts that down, doesnt embolden them, doesnt give it the time of day. Unfortunately modern western society invites us to consider that everyone's views are valid and justified and we must listen and consider them and act upon them too, for fear of offence.

Well no.

Blackandbluesed · 15/09/2024 23:08

It speaks volumes about how broken America is and an insight into why extremist politics is proving popular. He shouldnt have been able to run. He should be in prison. America needs radical political reform to prevent the likes of Trump but given it's as large and as diverse as a whole continent, how on earth will that happen?

So he got hit, you think it’s not in the realms of reality that he still could have staged it…? Could have gone wrong but I wouldn’t put it past him whatsoever ever. He has the money and the means to do so. So it’s not really that far fetched if you broaden your mind a little. and I’m the one that’s stupid?
It literally makes him look like a martyr. The fact that he’s even still allowed to run for president whilst having a criminal case against him is wild.

BruFord · 15/09/2024 23:10

@daisychain01 Unfortunately, that type of behavior isn't uncommon among politicians, look at the Kennedy family.

Anyway, I'm in the US and while I'm no fan of the man, these assassination attempts are alarming. We're politically divided and we desperately need gun controls, because human beings aren't stable, any of us can tip over the edge and turn into killers. It won't happen though.Sad

So we should just insult and other those we disagree with and dismiss them as being less than until such time as they become the majority and elect the likes of Trump in?

Neves7 · 15/09/2024 22:48

Interesting thought. I hadn’t considered that but now that you mention it does kind of makes sense. If he thinks he’s going to lose or just doesn’t want to deal with it - maybe this would be a convenient excuse?

Edited

Even if he loses it will be the same as last time - he won't accept he lost!

Sexyshrek · 15/09/2024 23:10

Imagine if Trump was assassinated and JD Vance won the election on 5th November 😳😳😳

BBC report says Trump was a couple of holes back (several hundred feet away) and that his security spotted a gun poking out the bushes.

We know the reasons; racism, xenophobia, misogyny, evangelicalism and the cult of personality. He's a con man who has people believing he can turn back the clock to the 1950s. That's what "make America great again" means. It's about a return to white male supremacy and rapid economic growth. Look at who his base is mostly comprised of- white men without a college degree. The economy has changed and they don't want to accept it. There used to be manufacturing jobs for those men, but the US is no longer a manufacturing based economy, and that'd due to how cheaply goods can be produced in Asia. These men see college educated women and POC surpassing them economically and interpret it as a deliberate economic assault on the white man. Tump is telling them exactly what they want to hear to feed this delusion and their sense of victimhood.

There isn't much to be done about any of that because it's not based on anything rational.

BruFord · 15/09/2024 23:18

@soupfiend

@Blackandbluesed is simply making the valid point that a number of people who now support Trump are from areas that traditionally voted Democrat. JD Vance's family voted Democrat, for example. But they've switched their allegiance to Trump and the Democrats need to pay attention to why this has happened - and regain their support.

@XChrome Yes, economic reasons are a big factor, and they need to be addressed. I've driven through some of those former industrial/manufacturing areas and they're grim, there's literally nothing for miles around.

soupfiend · 15/09/2024 23:20

You can only regain their support by having the same views and messages, its the same with the Brexit issue here. Labour losing what they considered to be their voters in the referendum.

So whats the answer, to be as racist and xenophobic so you get your voters back?

Exactly this and exactly like that tantrum about the red pencil

It has an incel vibe to me, these sorts of suggestions, lets listen to the person that considers themselves a victim (even though they;re not) and see how we can placate them by changing ourselves and our society rather than them change or just be left behind.

Which is what has happened throughout history. The economy tanks, the skilled/unskilled labour lose their jobs, they see migration still happening so point the finger and from a place of total ignorance shout "it's them! It's them!" And will vote in anyone who will come along and pat their backs, tell them it's all ok and they'll fix it.

US absolutely needs gun controls.

Trump did absolutely zero to address the problem, in fact he purposefully pandered to the gun lobby, illegally undermining the legislation by having 500,000 records deleted from the federal background check system

https://democracyforward.org/work/sidebar-trump-done-guns-lot/

he now reaps what he sowed.

What Has Trump Done on Guns? A Lot.

In the wake of repeated mass shootings, he's systematically gutted existing gun laws in ways that make kids and communities less safe.
