Good to see the children of the rich and famous doing real jobs?

OK I know she shouldn't have done the below but I actually find it refreshing that the children of of the rich and famous do real jobs and don't take advantage of nepotism. So many of the children of celebrities seem to become models or singers (though you haven't heard their music) it beggars belief.

I am glad some celeb offspring aren't too posh to do important jobs that maybe involve tough clinical conditions.

Jamie Oliver's daughter risks being disciplined for graphic posts

The 21-year-old has shared a series of graphic posts - which could be deemed unprofessional - on social media about her work and her patients.

Well, actually, not always. Richard Branson's daughter qualified as a doctor and then chucked the job. I always think of a place she denied to those really wanting to study medicine, knowing full well she did not need the job.

BlueglassesBlondehair · 15/09/2024 08:22

At least she’s being honest about what the job involves. It’s an eye opener for some. Care work is on a similar level , I have friends literally forced by UC towards care roles which aren’t well paid and work conditions literally shit. I was told to consider it once I totally refused due to sensory issues as I can’t touch other people wash them feed them or clean up as I have autism luckily they accepted that. I think although Daisy has perhaps broken some rules people need to realise how hard these type of jobs are

You see nepotism a lot, Bradley Walsh and his personality free son who gets to work along side him off on “ adventures” around America .
Lorraine Kelly’s daughter has just had a baby, her daughter’s partner has now started making insta stories about the Dads side of new parenthood as you can imagine it’s not groundbreaking stuff.
I looked at comments they said oh this is so refreshing you need to bring out a book …. I thought no you really don’t.
Good for her doing nursing I expect lots of youngsters need to be told how to act professionally in this share everything social media age, hopefully she’ll learn.

To be fair, Barney Walsh is a good actor in his own right.

PhoebeFriends · 15/09/2024 08:24

Not sure if you were querying if it was nepotism in private schools @mids2019 . It definitely happened in the local authority.

I worked in one school when the son of the area improvement officer was moved in as an assistant head - he was about to be placed on capability procedures at his previous school
. He was truly terrible but the job he got had been created for him. I wish I’d complained at the time but this was the height of the Gove area and we were all so demoralised we seemed to put up with anything.

OhshutupBarry · 15/09/2024 08:24

She needs to learn fast to guard her tongue of she wants to qualify as a Nurse. This kind of shite is totally unacceptable when entering the profession and can bring Nurses into disrepute, celebrity Dad or not. Hopefully she will have learnt a valuable lesson.

Vintagevixen · 15/09/2024 08:24

Even if they are reasonably talented as, say, an actress there are loads of other non-nepo kids equally as talented.

However, those others have to pay rent, bills, travel and feed themselves. Celeb kids NEVER have to worry about that. That alone gives them a massive advantage.

I often think of McQueen and how talented he was, I don't think a McQueen could rise through the ranks these days. He came from a really poor background, a similar kid these days would be crowded out by nepo kids and the lack of free education/finances/ways to support yourself . It's a pity.

What specifically did she do wrong the posting a picture of herself in uniform? With the other thing she didn’t give any patient details so are nurses not allowed to
talk about their work?

PiddleOfPuppies · 15/09/2024 08:28

I think there's going to be an avalanche of influencer's offspring expecting to continue the family business in the next few years. They're not rich by the same standards as the Olivers, but won't have seen how money is earned through work and have grown up with a camera following their every move (whether they like it or not). It's got to cloud your level of entitlement and value of education.

I’ll leave this here and say no more…..

I visited the Picasso museum and this is amazing in comparison!

She didn't need it exactly (though she obviously needed to do something), but she wanted to be a doctor at the time, and was for a while. I don't see how her being accepted as a medical student denied somebody else the chance, the selection process is quite stringent.

People are allowed to change career direction. Both I and my husband did as did many people we knew.

Sometimes people became disillusioned with what they originally chose, or stale. They want a different challenge. I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all if they can afford it, which not everyone can.

SensibleSigma · 15/09/2024 08:29

Are you all in jobs where you don’t try and help your friends and family? Don’t you send listings to friends who are looking for a job in your field? Don’t you use the plumber/decorator you know rather than the one you don’t?
When you are very close to someone in a profession, you get a good idea what the role is like and whether you’d be suited to it. If it’s your parents then elements of that life style are your family normal, whether that’s shift work, dirty work, or whatever.

Sales people will have grown up surrounded by persuasiveness, musicians’ families will have had gigging christmases as their normal.

Vintagevixen · 15/09/2024 08:29

I'm a nurse and NEVER post any details about my work on social media. I never give details of my work day, or what I've done even without names.

It's just not appropriate IMO. When you do an intimate procedure that's private between you and that patient, the whole world doesn't need to know even if anonymised.

Oh, come on. Every sleb game show involves easier questions, it's obvious. They aren't fixing it, given that they are competing against other slebs and it's all for charity anyway.

Except University Challenge! The 'celebs' on it are usually pretty well educated though.

12FreeRangeEggs · 15/09/2024 08:31

My Dad is famous. Contrary to the media narrative of spoilt nepo babies riding their parents coat tails being a distasteful thing, I have always found the opposite. People tend to seem disappointed when they find out who my Dad is, disappointed in me and the normality of my life when I could have been ‘so much more’. But I didn’t inherit Dad’s talent and my parents didn’t have much of an interest in moulding my adult life. DH and I have actually done very well on our own but our wealth pales into significance compared to my Dad’s. Sometimes you just can’t win.

DanglingMod · 15/09/2024 08:34

Celebrity University Challenge is definitely easier than the regular one. It's generally more arts, politics and cultural questions, the kinds of things which are general knowledge as you age. The regular one is much more heavy on science, maths, obscure history etc, alongside culture questions.

I can beat the Celebrity teams. I definitely don't beat the normal students.

Lots of A list celebs seemed to be wavibg their kids off to college last minth including Adam Sandler and Chris Martin so at least some of them are working hard and getting into college. It must be weird to be on courses and sharing halls with them.

i was talking to an american studentvlast week who told me she was a dorm buddy with Teresa Guildiuces daughter from RHNJ she had no gossip (i tried) but apparently shes finished a degree in law.

It won't be so weird for the students of the kids' generation, though. I went to school with a few kids who had "famous" parents (OK, not Chris Martin famous! But very well-known British 80s pop/TV stars) and I remember being totally shocked at my mum getting properly flustered around them at parents evenings, because to me they were just boring old relics from TOTP2!

I know Bill Gate's daughter is a medic.

This really surprised me. I know from someone who works with her that she actually does all the 12 hour shifts even when pregnant. She is very hard working and nice. She has a beautiful apartment of course but is very committed to her medical training. She could just be “lazy” and hang around. Her brother also works but avoids social media and public appearances.

MovingTooFast121 · 15/09/2024 08:39

The subjective nature of the NMC rules around social media posts is so infuriating. All I can see from that article is she has been honest about the realities of nursing. Clemmie Hooper did far worse with no more than a slap on the wrist.

Musiclover234 · 15/09/2024 08:39

I remember when facebook was in its first year or two, staff sharing status like they had a bad day because of a tricky patient or whatever. No identifying info but enough to get pulled in over it. My profiles went very private.

Now there are loads of policies and guidance over this, they will have been through it at uni. she’s a young student but needs to understand to lock her social media and be mindful because of who her dad is. Other students will be doing the same just they don’t have a famous dad.

Not on socials no! Do you want your nurse or doctor to post about you or your parents after they treated you?!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 15/09/2024 08:43

Quite - there's a high chance her patients will recognise themselves from her descriptions

It's unprofessional. End of.

Lily Collins, not the worst actress, but you have to ask in the extremely competitive world of acting whether old Phil pulled a few strings. To start his daughter's career genesis?

Her mum is an actress and she grew up in LA. That probably helped more than dad Phil. I might be wrong but I didn’t think they had a good or close relationship for ages.

at least she had to work (and I like her in Emily in Paris) what I can’t stand is the whole influencer nepo baby generation like Holly Ramsay, Brooklyn Beckham, Lottie Moss…

I will tell you how she denied somebody a place. In the same way one place was denied, for 2 years running, to somebody at the ........ University, because one applicant, whose mum is one of the directors of studies at the said university, spoke to the head of medical school and this boy was allowed 'to postpone' first year and then, 'unexpectedly' second year, because he has been accepted to represent the UK in one sport. The numbers on the course are limited each year. Each year the calculation was done based on the number, and so were the rejections of all applicants with the relevant BMATs and exam results.

I've heard similar stories from friends too - she simply needs a slap on the wrists for over sharing and to carry on, they're used to posting everything. Good for her for doing a real job.

LinkedIn and the people I've worked with before got me my last two jobs, nepotism is human nature, we want to work with people we feel we know as it's less scary. Agree it's an issue for recruitment but there are all sorts of networks.

But will she get 'a slap on the wrist' if she's J.O daughter or be treated with kid gloves? A nice little calm talking to at best? I doubt she'll be raked over the coils - even considering that it has made the newspapers - in the sane way bog standard Sandra working herself up from nothing for whom a nursing career is a real ticket out of abject poverty would be.

I doubt Sandra would even risk it. I know she's young but there's a flavour of 'I'm really too good for this' in her posing posts.

If I was her potential patient no way would I want her to tend to me knowing my private condition might become fodder for her vapid celebrity adoring social media fans.
