Tiny disappointments in life

Dh has just put on an episode of University Challenge. It disappoints me every time that the teams aren't actually sitting one on top of the other.

They are sitting on top of the other team in the Young Ones episode called Bambi.

Finding out that most weekend / Friday night shows are not live (Graham Norton, Ant and Dec, Saturday Kitchen etc) Or that the Christmas TV specials are usually filmed in the summer. Always kills me a little bit inside.

Aww @CentrifugalBumblePuppy hugs to you. When she was 5, DD had some kid in her class who was wanging on about her special tooth fairy and how she had the only one who was visited by her blah blah. You know the sort of kid - just a bit mean and always trying to create drama where none existed. The tooth fairy was called Cheryl apparently. When DD lost her first tooth I went to the stationery shop that day and bought a set of the metallic pens with the ball bearing in them (like we had in the 80’s) and some really fancy writing paper and matching envelopes. I then used my best 80’s child swirly calligraphy writing to write a letter to DD from Cheryl explaining how she was sooo special that only the really important children got a letter with the money left under the pillow. DD was so thrilled she took it into school for show and tell. The Teacher loved it and made a fuss of her. The mean kid shut up. Everyone was a winner.

My Mum would never have done that for me either.

That the channel tunnel isn’t made of glass. I remember the breakthrough in the middle taking place about the same time I went to the sea life centre for the first time and although by the time I first traveled through it I knew, I am still a little sad every time.

I thought the Channel Tunnel was a train with windows that looked into the sea. That wasn't a tiny disappointment mind you, I was devastated 😂

Fizz bombs do not make you fly. Why say it then? Why say it.

No and red bull doesn’t give you wings either

Miffylou · 13/09/2024 09:04

Aged 6 and we went on holiday to Wales. When we went over the England/Wales border and it looked just the same I was very disappointed. I had expected everything to look different and exotic in a different country. (I think I was vaguely expecting mud huts and roaming tigers.)

Red Bull does not give you wings. Sad about that.

Some panty-liners do, tho

@CentrifugalBumblePuppy : The appearance of the raisin still rankles, and I’m nearly 52. Bastards.
You're dead to me!
The raisins, toffees and chocolate discs were the only decent Revels. Coffee cream? NOOOOO. Peanut? NOOOOO. Orange? THRICE NO!!
4oz of Bonds chocolate raisins were a weekly (and bloody expensive) treat!

😂You should have got one from Ann Summers!

You wouldn't be able to do much nursing in an Anne Summer's outfit!!

M and S sparks card. Never has so underwhelming a loyalty card sat in my purse. When they ask do you have a sparks card I'm embarrassed to say yes I do. I have started to quiz the checkout person each time I'm in there about how many people exactly have got their shopping for free. So far, not many.

This! They serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever. When the staff ask if I have a Sparks card I'm like yeah I do but why? What am I achieving by handing it over? So depressing.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/09/2024 09:14

Biting into a delicious-looking apple and discovering it's floury instead of crisp. Sad

That Stonehenge is soooo small!

id seen it many times from the road as a kid, got there aged 50(ish). Bucket list thing to do. And Ohhhhhh, ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️

in hindsight I suppose to lug stones the size I’d assumed they were would probably have been impossible.

Quite - where was Eddie Stobbart when needed?!

madaboutpurple · 13/09/2024 09:15

When Radio Luxembourg closed down a place was featured on the news that was in London. I always thought all the programmes would be done from Luxembourg. I used to get the Fab 208 magazine and adored Fab 208 ice lollies and nowadays they are just called Fab.

Mutzadell · 13/09/2024 09:16

I always get disappointed when you have to find your country for a form and it's a drop down menu - are we England under E, Great Britain under GB or United Kingdom under UK. Whichever one it is, I am always disappointed with myself when I get it (inevitably) wrong.

I like it when I open it at the end with the leaflet. Makes it easier to pop straight in the (recycling) bin.

(I don't do this for medications that anyone in the house might want to take but be unfamiliar with, and I'm only happy to do it because it's so easy to find patient information leaflets online if necessary. But yet another paracetamol/loperamide/daily prescription medication leaflet? Bin bin binnety bin.)

Why oh why do paracetamol and ibuprofen waste paper and ink by putting instructions in every packet?!?! Who has ever read these?! 😂

Nelliemellie · 13/09/2024 09:18

Every time I go to the town centre and reminisce about all the good department shops like BHS Debenhams all gone now replaced by cheap tacky shops, and that I can’t get a coffee and some lunch without it being a chain like Costa. Also the m and s cafe has closed down in my local one and they keep sending me coffee vouchers.

ProvincialLady2024 · 13/09/2024 09:19

That the a la carte kitchen did not make real food as the TV advert depicted.

Mr Frosty. Just shit.

YES! I got my daughter a set a couple of years ago, except obviously I was really getting it for me. Mum was RIGHT. The only thing that's effectively crushing about it is the disappointment.

It has never been called a Fab 208! This lolly, and a Zoom, were bought out to 'complement' (actually, just merchandising) the Thunderbirds programme

I felt the same when we went to a caravan on the Wirral one year 😂

Jools Holland's Hootenanny is filmed 2 weeks beforehand. That weirdly devastated me when I found out a couple of years ago. I'm not sure why I expected that Jools Holland would spend every single NYE in a TV studio but apparently I did.

Pink Lady. Every time.

I thought I’d tried them but I might be wrong. I’ll give them a go. Thanks!

@SummerLightning I think SummerLightening beer is still around.

I'm partial to a pint or two of Shere Drop.

Good post bike recovery drink Grin

There used to be a ridiculously handsome security guard in my local waitrose. He was so striking even DP couldn't help mentioning it.

He went part time so each visit was a thrill - would he be there? A tiny shard of disappointment if he wasn't.

He left last year but I still look for him. A part of my life will never be the same. I think DP is gutted too but we don't discuss it.
