Yorkshire days out

We are very excited to be doing our first holiday to Filey in October. Never been to Yorkshire and we are all excited. We have a 10 and 9 year old. What are the best days out? We don’t mind driving a little distance from Filey to them as this is our main holiday this year so want to make the most of it!

Sorry to hijack your thread! I’m going soon too. Any recommendations for nice places to eat? Are there some car parks not far from the beach?

Oh Filey is one of my favourite East Coast places.
I've put a link up for you.
Filey Brig is great for rock pooling.
Glen Gardens is fabulous( Paddle boats).
If you drive into Scarborough..Peasholm park is a must.

Scarborough has plenty to occupy kids and adults and is quite close by, Whitby is lovely with lots of winding little lanes, a harbour and the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Bridlington is also nice and has a leisure centre with a good pool with slides and a splash zone and there’s plenty of places to eat quite cheaply. Also take a look at Flamborough Heads, just a little way down the coast.
it’s a lovely area where we often take our GC’s and we always have a great time wherever we go there.

Filey is glorious - the beach is fantastic! There are two main car parks on either end of the beach - Filey Brigg at the north end and West Avenue at the south end. Both are only a couple of minutes walk from the beach, but there's a fairly steep path. Out of season it's quite easy to find on-street parking which can mean you can avoid the steep paths if you'd prefer.

In Filey - Inghams is a great F&C shop/cafe, and San Marco is a reliable post for pizza.

Whitby and Scarborough are lovely places to visit.

There's a great (cheap!) swimming pool with slides in Bridlington - best to book if you're going in half term - https://www.eastridingleisure.co.uk/swim/splash-zone/
Cayton Bay is lovely for rockpooling.
The North York Moors Railway runs from Pickering to Whitby www.nymr.co.uk/
Dalby Forest
The Fairground Museum is great (especially in wet weather) www.scarboroughfaircollection.com/
Playdales Farm
Castle Howard
Sledmere House and Farm

And lots of other things too!

York just over an hour away and definitely worth a day visit, definitely recommend park and ride because parking in the city is expensive. There is the railway museum, castle museum, hole in wand is good and you can wander the city walls. Food wise there is a selection of the usual chains Pizza Hut, Bella Italia, Bills, plus loads of independents: great street food options in the Shambles, Rise, my favourite for coffee and cake is Wheldrakes.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 12/09/2024 15:41

If you like outdoors activities (walking/cycling etc), Dalby forest is great and not too far from Filey. Whitby is fantastic for a day out too. We often park at Humnanby gap and walk to Filey along the beach - there is a great doughnut shack at the north end of the beach (in a row with other takeaways), opposite the Lifeboat station.

Chocadoddledoo · 12/09/2024 15:45

If you don't mind driving abit further, the forbidden corner near Middleham is well worth a visit.

Forbidden corner is rubbish, don't bother. It's tired and sad and overrated. If I lived nextdoor I wouldn't bother making the trip. I don't get the love for it

Robin Hood's Bay is lovely. Flamingo Land is really close by and worth a visit if you can find some kind of voucher, otherwise very expensive. Peasholm Park in Scarborough is really nice, you can hire litte pedal boats on the lake and there's a miniature railway (if it's still there!)

Newtrix · 12/09/2024 16:20

I second Robin Hoods Bay, absolutely beautiful little village with a lovely walk along the coast to Boggle Hole to hunt for fossils.

grumpyoldeyeore · 12/09/2024 16:26

North Yorkshire Moors railway

Cupofteaandbiscuits · 12/09/2024 16:34

I think driving up to an hour / hour and a half away from Filey. We need to drive almost 7 hours just to get to Filey so I’m not sure DC will thank me for doing more than this each day. Loving the suggestions :)

Scarborough Art Gallery is lovely.
Most of the beaches around Filey are excellent. Bempton Cliffs is brilliant for a walk and bird watching. They've had an albatross there for a few years which adds to the excitement.

Try a guided fossil walk - various locations along the Yorkshire coast.

I like the walk along the coast path between Robin Hood's Bay and Boggle Hole. There's a hostel there where you can get snacks, and when I stayed there, well-organised families had little bonfires on the shingle.

There's a great cycle path between Scarborough and Whitby, the cinder track. It's 21.7 miles so you mightn't want to do the full thing, but it's worth doing part of it as far as Hayburn Wyke. You can have something to eat at the Hayburn Wyke Inn.

Agreed, and FC is about 2 hours drive from Scarborough/Filey!

Thistooshallpass24 · 12/09/2024 19:48

My link didn't work,
C4 Yorkshire by the sea 😍 ( C4 on demand well worth a watch)
Bempton looks brilliant

Rawrrawr1 · 12/09/2024 20:51

Humble bee farm is a lovely gem
Fossil hunting at runswick bay
We are fans of Sledmere House and sewerby hall

Helplessandheartbroke · 12/09/2024 20:53

Been to Filey twice and we did a day in Scarborough and a day in whitby. Would recommend both

whoami24601 · 12/09/2024 21:21

Falling Foss is my absolute favourite place in the whole world so I definitely recommend there. York is only an hours drive from Filey if you want a city with indoor things. Scarborough is lovely but I'd stick to North Bay for a quieter beach. Yorkshire is great - you'll love it!
