Is your heating on yet?

It's cold here today. Sat with a hot water bottle while working from home. Tempted to pop mine on for an hour or two.

Ours comes on when the rooms we are in drop below 19C (we have the Wiser system). It wasn't on over the weekend when it was warm but since then the temperature outside (NE England) has dropped to 7C so the (old, no cavity insulation) house has cooled and the heating came on in the sitting room in the evening for the first time in months last night. Looking at my stats the heating has come on for 13 out of the last 30 days but most are for very short time periods (< 30 mins) and not every room. By winter that will increase to all day but not the whole house. DH WFH and so the room he works in has the heating on but the rest of the house is allowed to cool until the rest of us come home.

When people's heating come on will depend on the location (yesterday the temperature across the UK varied from 5.7 C to 20.4 C) and the level of insulation the house has. So it's ridiculous for someone in a modern flat in Teddington Bushy Park to make rude comments about someone in a drafty old house in Loch Glascarnoch having the heating on yesterday because there was nearly 15C difference in the outside temperature in those two locations.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 11/09/2024 13:06

We put it on yesterday evening for a couple of hours. It was single figures temp wise. It's only 10 degrees outside now & has been windy.
I'm in Scotland & the local high peaks had snow last night.

Bickybics · 11/09/2024 13:09

The wind where I am is freezing today, my weather app says it feels like 7 degrees.

I have just boosted mine but that’s because I’m already sick of towels not drying inbetween uses.
I’ve got sheets on the line which I suspect will mostly dry as it’s so windy but will need some warmth to get them actually dry.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/09/2024 13:10

Yes, today, mainly as some people are saying to get washing dry.

Starlight1979 · 11/09/2024 13:10

Well we live in the middle of the countryside (in the North!) in an old house and so yes, we've had the heating on this week. And the log burner!

LadyDanburysHat · 11/09/2024 13:11

Mine is on, I'm in Scotland. It is set to come on when the temp drops below 18 in the room I work in. It is starting to get chilly here now.

Mintgum · 11/09/2024 13:19

No heating on yet windows are still open well mine are all year round.
Just had a rain storm and its windy but its lovely best weather.
Cant wait for all the fog frost and bitter chilly days and nights.

Flatulence · 11/09/2024 13:37

Absolutely not.

I'm in the North West and it's not going on til October at the very earliest. It's 11 degrees outside today (single figures at night) but a lot warmer in my Victorian house. I have asthma that's exacerbated by very cold weather... But it isn't very cold here. Just autumnal. N

Unless you're very old, have very young children, or you/someone in your household has a medical reason that means they feel the cold and/or shouldn't get cold then it seems quite extreme to fire up the central heating on 11 September in Cheshire, even if it is a touch chillier than usual for the time of year. Jumpers, socks, a hot drink and a blanket while sitting are surely much more reasonable both in terms of cost and general resilience.

Edited to add that in other locations where the temp is a fair bit colder then obviously different rules apply.

Peonies12 · 11/09/2024 13:42

Of course not! It’s so mild. And it’s unhealthy to be an overly warm house. Get moving to warm up!

Cas112 · 11/09/2024 13:44

First time this morning

RedToothBrush · 11/09/2024 12:05

I think you should see a doctor about poor circulation issues.

Or consider putting on a jumper.

Flipping ridiculous.

Chill out! So many people have anger issues on Mumsnet.

Sidebeforeself · 11/09/2024 13:46

I don’t understand why people feel the need to lecture other adults about what they should/shouldnt do to keep warm in their own homes. There are so many different factors that affect how we feel the cold , there are simply no “shoulds’. I suppose its one of those “performative” topics where people love to show off/fib about how different they are so we are all really impressed “ Ooh I wear shorts and flip flops in the snow!”

coxesorangepippin · 11/09/2024 13:48

What is this disregard for people who feel the cold?!

Sticking a sweater on isn't the same as the air around you being warm

If you can afford it, etc etc

Grmumpy · 11/09/2024 13:55

Yes..one hour to take the chill off..I hate being cold and it was 16 degrees on the thermometer here.

I think there is one upmanship involved, it's a race to the bottom to prove that being cold is just a state of mind. If affordability is the issue then the poster has my sympathy, but every year there seems to be this weird idea that putting on the central heating is a sign of weakness. Having lived in a very cold house as a child, I don't desire to be miserable.

Read the thread! It's not mild everywhere. It's bitterly cold in some places and even with the heating on a little, my house isn't remotely warm let alone overly warm. If money were no issue, I'd have it a good few degrees warmer to actually be comfortable.

spikeandbuffy · 11/09/2024 14:07

No, it's 19c inside and I've got a window open
I'm fine until it's below 16c inside

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 11/09/2024 14:08

Mines been on since early august at least a few hours a day.

Now at the lint of just putting it back on entirely.

It's freezing. 🥶

SirChenjins · 11/09/2024 14:10

Yes - I refuse to be cold or damp so it’s been on for a short while but when needed.

We don't all live where you live. It's not mild where I am. It's cold.

KenIsAnAccessory · 11/09/2024 14:14

It was 5 degrees outside this morning, and going down to 2 overnight where I am. Also live in a big old draughty cold house and (ironically given the post that won dick head bingo 🤣) I do actually have issues with my circulation.

I hadn't realised this would spark such lively debate, was expecting a very British conversation about the weather 🙈

ghostofadog · 11/09/2024 14:19

Was 14 degrees in the bathroom this morning so yes, the heating has been on! I'm in NE Scotland though, always colder here than England so it really depends where you are. I don't mind it being a bit chilly when I'm moving about but sitting still working it feels cold if it's much below 18 inside so I heat the room I'm in.

henlake7 · 11/09/2024 14:53

Have to admit I am feeling the cold at the moment even though I live in the SE (lost alot of weight this year and it seems it really does make you feel chillier!).
No heating on though, Im trying to wait til October until I put the storage heater on in the bathroom and thats just coz it will get damp otherwise.

Rest of the heating will stay off as long as possible but I am digging out all my Oodies, electric blanket and hot water bottle though!

MrsDoylesLipstick · 11/09/2024 15:05

I'm feeling a bit chilly, but the thermostat is saying it's 20degrees still inside. So can't really get away with putting the heating on yet.

I'm in e yorks. It's interesting to hear how warm or cold other people's houses are, though.

Heatherbell1978 · 11/09/2024 15:08

I'm in Scotland and it felt cold this morning. I don't want to put the heating on yet but I'll be digging out my Oodie tonight!
