About memories that can’t possibly be real.

Does anyone have any memories from childhood that seem so bizzare that they couldn’t possibly be true but yet you still remember them as clear as day.

I remember my dad taking me to the local pub. Not a rare occasion in 1980s. Anyway I made a friend there and we were running around and playing together. She had long black straight black hair in bunches and was wearing a floral dress. (This is relevant) Anyway fast forward sometime me and my Dad went back into the pub and the said girl was there again. However this time was entirely different. She had short blond hair with a pixie cut and was wearing a leather jacket a white top and a pair of jeans and ankle boots. I know people can change but it wasn’t just her appearance that had changed it was her whole personality. She was sat there with a glass of wine.
I can’t actually remember how I knew it was her. I even remember saying to here. Do you remember when you were a kid like me and we were playing, When was that? “Last year”.she said and I replied How come you’re a lady now and she said “Oh just I turned into an adult.” Therefore in the course of a year she gone from a playful child the same age as me to a grown adult within the course of a year.

What.

MrTwatchester · 10/09/2024 20:06

By "memories that can't possibly be real" do you mean dreams?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/09/2024 20:06

i know it’s insane.

Is everyone on some weird sort of creative writing thing atm?

Anothernamechane · 10/09/2024 20:11

People can have false memories op. Clearly a young child running around playing doesn’t turn into an adult with a glass of wine in a year. If the conversation happened she was obviously just humouring you.

TickingAlongNicely · 10/09/2024 20:12

More likely to have been an older sister or cousin than the same person

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/09/2024 20:09

Yeah, ok.

Well I never claimed it be true, did I. I said myself the memory as vivid and as as it was is so bizarre it obviously wasn’t real.

If this memory is a real thing how old would you have been? It’s perfectly possible for a person to have changed their appearance quite dramatically. But you don’t go from being a child in bunches who plays with other children to a wine drinking adult in the space of a year.
Either you and her were decidedly older than you’re suggesting. Or you have misremembered this even or the time spans.
It does sound much more likely as a dream.

I get what you mean OP. I vividly remember being able to fly, I used to climb up the bookcase and fly round the room. Obviously that can't have happened but I remember it clearly. I guess it was a dream or daydream and my brain kind of mis-filed it as a real memory.

ComeWineWithMeAgain · 10/09/2024 20:19

The adult version was probably related to the little girl in some way and thought it would be funny to 'trick' you, I remember being a young child in the 80's and it was far more common to tease children than it was to explain things properly to them!

loropianalover · 10/09/2024 20:19

Well it’s obviously not a memory, it’s something you’ve made up.

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 10/09/2024 20:21

I think sometimes our dreams get misfiled as memories. This has all the hallmarks of a vivid dream.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying It must be false memory. As I’ve previously stated no where did I say this really happened.

It’s called a dream love. You have them when you sleep.

SonjaBarkerFinch · 10/09/2024 20:25

I remember jumping from the top of the stairs when I was younger. Obviously it didn’t happen but I’ve heard it’s a very common false memory.

These days I don’t remember anything Grin

I have the same false memory! I even remember telling my mum about it as a child, and being so confused when she said it hadn't happened.

It’s common. It’s a very young false memory which is actually a baby/toddler being carried down the stairs

Time for bed OP

About memories that can’t possibly be real.
Strawberrycheesecake7 · 10/09/2024 21:22

Maybe it did happen, but you got confused and convinced yourself it was the same person for some reason when it wasn’t. The adult woman may have just agreed that she knew you because you were a little child and she didn’t want to upset you. I’ve had some odd conversations with children before where they’re talking about things that don’t make any sense and I’m just nodding along and agreeing. It seems a bit mean to tell a random child that they’re wrong about something when you don’t even know them and they seem so excited about it.
