What have you started doing that tells you Autumn is coming?

I realised today I am moving into Autumn mode. In the last week or so, I have been:
Making lentil soup for lunch
Making vegetable casseroles with beans and other pulses
Painting autumnal landscapes instead of summery scenes
Picked the apples from the tree
Closing the garden doors in the evening
Taking my waterproof hat when I go out walking
Bringing the cats in from the garden about 7.30pm
Put the heating on twice
Having a nice warm bath before bed
Wearing longer leggings so there is no gap around my ankles

Waering trousers instead of shorts and taking a hoodie out with me (havent had to wear it yet). Washing the living room fleece blankets to freshen them up for hibernating.

The hanging baskets and planters are starting to go over. They've been so pretty this summer because it never got warm enough to frazzle them

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 10/09/2024 13:02

Not much other than putting the heating on.
I suppose wearing longer leggings trackies rather than shorts all the time.
Trainers over sliders.
Got my coat out the cupboard.

Lalalacrosse · 10/09/2024 13:06

Started planning next years holiday

WingingItMam48 · 10/09/2024 13:07

Had a hot latte from Costa instead of my usual iced one. Put the big fan away in the cupboard. Got my big cardigan out while WFH. Looked at boots on Skechers website. Determine to get a comfy pair this year, don't think trainers will cut it this winter.

JustSaltPlease · 10/09/2024 13:09

I have started packing away the garden, all the summer toys etc. Covered up my patio table

DiscoBeat · 10/09/2024 13:11

Put my Birkenstocks away and I'm making a vegetable moussaka tonight instead of a nice summery dish. Eyeing up the barbecue to think about putting it away :-(

DaveWatts · 10/09/2024 13:15

Made dal, stewed apples, soup, curry, crumbles
Put on a wool wash
Summer clothes put away in bags
Started turning on the light and wearing a cardie in the mornings
Bought new winter boots and coat
Chimney sweep coming this week

hookiewookie29 · 10/09/2024 13:30

Crocheting pumpkins.....

Allnewtometoo · 10/09/2024 13:37

Put tights and shoes on.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/09/2024 13:52

I've brought the house plants back indoors. They loved their summer holiday on the balcony. They're all looking much healthier.

GalaticalFarce · 10/09/2024 13:57

Well I have made soup today!
A lovely tomato soup with some home made olive bread.
Very autumnal and delicious.

handslikecowstits · 10/09/2024 14:09

I've stripped all the leaves from my tomato plants so they can get maximum sunlight before 22nd September. Ditto the aubergines and peppers. The greenhouse doors and windows are now staying closed. Planted out the last of the kale, harvested what might be the last of the french beans if we do get a frost this week, collected the apples and attempted to harvest some pears but they're no where near ready yet and made notes on what worked this year and what didn't as per usual.

DH and I are preserving like mad and eating what is already in the freezers ready for stews and casseroles to be added.

Generally I'm going to bed a bit earlier as it's getting dark and I'm drinking more red wine. Every cloud... 😜

benid · 10/09/2024 14:10

Thought about asking my dad to start saving his newspapers for me again so I can stuff them in my wet trainers to dry them out after a dog walk!

ImInACage · 10/09/2024 14:11

Today I started shivering Grin

benid · 10/09/2024 14:32

OminousBirdAWing · 10/09/2024 07:25

Drying the dog's feet twice a day when coming back from a walk.

Sigh. It's a long slog until the 'clean' walks of summer again.

Oh yeahhh the muddy footprints have started here too 😲

GalaticalFarce · 10/09/2024 14:46

@ImInACage the most sure sign. Get those nice big cardis out.

poppymango · 10/09/2024 14:47

Getting impatient for the new season of Bake Off 😆I am SO ready!

longtompot · 10/09/2024 15:53

A stark reminder of the change in the seasons happened a couple of Sundays ago. We'd just finished a lovely roast dinner and I said I was going to sit out in the garden I'd been working on all day to finish my glass of wine. I turned around and look out of the kitchen window and it was pitch black! I'm not ready for autumn just yet...

But, in answer to your op I have started lighting the tealights on my mantle shelf and have put batteries in the fairy lights.

Norugratsatall · 10/09/2024 16:32

Looking for new courses to study, getting excited for Strictly.

Mermaidsarereal · 10/09/2024 16:34

For the past 2 days I've wore my boots because my feet were freezing! It definitely seems unseasonably cold in the NE anyway!

Wakemeuuuup · 10/09/2024 16:48

Massive spiders in the house
Wearing jeans, socks and trainers
Took nail varnish off toe nails
Wearing a jacket when out
Complaining about how dark it is (really feels like November)
Duvet on bed
Closing windows and back door

Loads of others. Can you tell I'm not happy about autumn closing in so quickly

pumpkinNspice · 10/09/2024 16:55

Freezing, but blinding sunshine, in my part of Scotland now ❄☀

-wet dog paws
-'Autumn' oil (from The White Company) in the diffuser
-winter duvet on with autumn cover
-electric blanket came out today for the sofa!
-not quite Oodie weather yet but I got it out and washed it

Also did my annual trip to TK Maxx for an autumn candle at the weekend, have a gorgeous one that looks and smells lovely.

What have you started doing that tells you Autumn is coming?
LeontineFrance · 10/09/2024 16:55

Socks & cardigan.

Bohomovies · 10/09/2024 16:56

There’s a towel by the front door to dry wet and muddy dogs off when coming home from a walk.
I’m buying less salad, and more vegetables. Starting to make soups again.
Every time I pick something up I stand back and shake it at arm’s length in case there’s a spider on it.
I’m attending yoga classes more often. I’m usually too busy to keep up with yoga in the summer.
My waterproofs are always to hand (although they have been for most of the summer tbh).
I’ve just ordered a milk frother and some new socks.
I’ve been browsing properties overseas, dreaming of a life in a better climate. It’s just a fantasy but it keeps me (kind of) sane.
