What have you started doing that tells you Autumn is coming?

I realised today I am moving into Autumn mode. In the last week or so, I have been:
Making lentil soup for lunch
Making vegetable casseroles with beans and other pulses
Painting autumnal landscapes instead of summery scenes
Picked the apples from the tree
Closing the garden doors in the evening
Taking my waterproof hat when I go out walking
Bringing the cats in from the garden about 7.30pm
Put the heating on twice
Having a nice warm bath before bed
Wearing longer leggings so there is no gap around my ankles

All this talk of heating, and blankets and cosying up has surprised me. I'm in the Midlands, have the patio doors open, and am comfortable in PJ shorts and vest.

I work outdoors and am still wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Slightly worried that my body's thermostat is broken!

I'm wondering this, I'm still sweating and wearing my shorts! Sure it's not as warm as it was but it seems a long way from jumpers, hot water bottles and knee high boots weather. How do you all cope in actual cold weather?

This.

The weather is still mild in London, and September is when I do my big end-of-summer holiday.

Off to Rhodes in a few days. Back in late September.

I think we will still get some late summer days up here in the north-east for another 6 weeks or so but autumn is here- our plum tree is dropping its leaves and there is more water around in rain and mists almost every day. The light is lower and paler and days are shorter.
About 12 weeks ago it never seemed pitch black up here and it was light by 4.00am. Now isn't light until 6.30 am. It's darker much earlier too.
The temperature has dropped about 5 degrees on average from about 18 -19C daily high to 13-14C daily high over the last week. I expect we'll still have some warmer days.

I’ve gone through my children’s clothes and uniform and have bagged up the stuff that is now too small for the charity shop.

Hopebridge · 10/09/2024 07:16

Wearing my fluffy slippers :)

liveforsummer · 10/09/2024 07:19

It's been autumn since about April here in Scotland so nothing for me has changed 😏

OminousBirdAWing · 10/09/2024 07:25

Drying the dog's feet twice a day when coming back from a walk.

Sigh. It's a long slog until the 'clean' walks of summer again.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/09/2024 07:38

I have worn tights, boots and a light denim jacket today, but that's because we have 40-45mph wind which makes it a bit chilly.

I'm still using my 2.5 tog duvet though, and definitely no heating yet, as the house (new build) is maintaining 19-21° still. Windows are most definitely open (except when it's super-windy, as it's too loud!).

We're moving past salad now though.

Ordered a new duvet cover - autumn themed!

@Nanny31 Good on you! My gorgeous autumn duvet set goes on at the weekend. 🍁

mondaytosunday · 10/09/2024 09:12

Put the gas fire on a couple times. I've taken the bunting I had across the back (put up for DDs birthday and it looked so nice kept it up) and replaced it with a garland if Autumn leaves (sounds tacky but even my judgemental teen approves). Wore a cardigan on a dog walk yesterday!

GalileoHumpkins · 10/09/2024 09:24

Nothing. It's still warm here and we're sleeping without a duvet, eating salad and wearing short sleeves.

Disturbia81 · 10/09/2024 09:32

Giant spiders
Fire on
Big coat on
Leaves on ground
Darker sooner

Chipsahoy · 10/09/2024 09:32

First day wearing tights today since spring. Very cold in Scotland this morning.
Heat came on too!

Not all of Scotland! We’ve had a glorious summer in north east

We don’t all live in the same place? It is currently 6c where I live and I’m in thin tights. We get real cold weather, thermals will be out once it hits minus temperatures. Rural north Scotland here.

liveforsummer · 10/09/2024 09:42

@Chipsahoy lucky you, you are the first person I have heard saying this so must have a micro climate. Here in Edinburgh even over last weekend when the rest of the country was basking in some long awaited sun we were stuck under heavy haar. There has of course been an occasional decent day but no spell of nice weather at all. We have a horse and already our fields are turning in to a mud bath which doesn't normally happen til late November. V depressing!

Jealous of your 6°!

Edited to add: because I love chilly weather, I mean. Not like "Jealous of your 6°; it's -20° here...

Arraminta · 10/09/2024 09:48

Winter weight duvet back on the bed. Velvetiser out of the cupboard. 'Autumn' aromatherapy oil from The White Company in diffuser. Sweaters refreshed and back in drawers.

This is my favourite time of year x

kittykarate · 10/09/2024 09:57

Dug through my wool stash for bits to use to crochet a blanket. I usually start one in late September, so that at my slow crochet pace it's heading to lap blanket size by November...

Sprogonthetyne · 10/09/2024 10:06

Swapped the summer bedding for thicker quilts

Put away all the shorts & saddles for me to year.

Got out all the winter coats

Found out the kids warmer PJ'S

Had to hang washing on the inside airer

GameOfJones · 10/09/2024 10:30

It is definitely turning.

I have been washing the blankets the past couple of days to add to the sofa and the beds (we have 4.5 tog duvets year round but add blankets as it gets colder.)

I just said to DH today I need to bring my jumpers and winter clothes out of the spare bedroom and swap over my summer clothes as I don't think I'll be wearing sandals or summer dresses until next year unfortunately.

Contemplating porridge for breakfasts and soup for lunches but still buying cereal, falafel and salads as I'm not quite ready to switch over.

The heating is still not on and we're still sleeping with windows open but that may change soon.

PandorasTin · 10/09/2024 10:37

Summer has mostly.passed us by this year so not.much. stew in the slow cooker today but my woolly socks and electric blanket never got put away this summer.

Onemorepenny · 10/09/2024 10:39

I was just thinking the same! Really want some hot soup for lunch today, take the chill out of the bones.

OrdsallChord · 10/09/2024 10:52

Definitely the soup for me! Still keeping windows open and in t shirts for now, it's the food cue.

AutumHarvestGlow · 10/09/2024 11:09

MiddleAgedDread · 09/09/2024 21:24

I had to wipe condensation off the bedroom window this morning!! It’s so autumnal here it’s ridiculous, we’ve barely had a summer and since 1st September it’s like a switch has been flicked.

Yes ! That's the sign for me that Autumn is here . I personally love Autumn 🍂

dierama · 10/09/2024 11:14

It really really cold here today (midlands). DS1 is just lighting the log burner
