Happy to see Princess Kate doing so well, but...

I'm really glad to see Kate doing so well, and I am glad she has finished chemo looking so healthy and happy. However my sister and I cannot stop laughing at the video Kensington Palace have just released.

We think the video has a striking resemblance to the Twilight films, only warm toned and shorter.

Narration - check
Holding hands while lying down in a meadow - check
Tree climbing - check
Stacks of logs - check
Dramatic sweeping shots of trees - check

I was waiting for William to say something really cringy while giving Kate a piggy back ride.

I will never understanding the fawning over these two average people. It's so odd.

This. My mum never even got to start chemo before she died a month ago, because the system is in such chaos. So it's pretty bitter-sweet to hear that someone else's mum had a much smoother ride in accessing care because of who she married.

I don't wish Catherine ill at all. I would not wish the ending my mum had on anyone. But it's a hard watch because every moment screams privilege, from instant access to care, to unlimited time off work, to private forests to romp in in her recovery.

If that makes me a bad person, so be it.

@Motorina Hey, I am deeply sorry about your mum. I hope you will find comfort in your daily life and the wound of losing someone dear will heal soon. Sending a hug.

I agree, her grammar was correct.

Yup. You just take out the William and its more obvious the me was correct.

Well I used not to. Then the haters started in and it made me feel defensive of them because actually, yes, they are two normal people trying to juggle a difficult role.

So there might be a lot less of what you call “ fawning” if there was a lot less hating and ceaseless criticism.

Countrylife2002 · 10/09/2024 07:16

As someone who has had cancer, I thought it was perfect. I’m a republican. But the feeling fits how I felt perfectly. I’m guessing those taking the piss haven’t experienced being diagnosed with cancer.

I don't mind the fawning. As long is it's posted in the board provided for it, which can be avoided. Assuming everyone else is interested was the first mistake I think.

Iforgotagain · 10/09/2024 07:18

I found it tone deaf. Not the reality for anyone I know with cancer.
My young colleague with 2 young children can only manage 1 day off after chemo to get over the worst of the vomiting then she's straight back to work as she has no paid sick leave left and can't afford to rest like Kate.
My lovely auntie took so long to get a diagnosis that her tumour is now massive and her op has been put back twice due to lack of staff. It's lovely that Kate managed to rest for 9 months and access health care so quickly but it's also an extremely privileged position to be in.

Countrylife2002 · 10/09/2024 07:25

It’s the feeling of it for me. Even now, I experience things as ‘memories’, which I think was the idea of the film. How lucky those of us who are still here after cancer are to spend time with our families and in nature. And I spent a great deal of time walking in forests after chemo, it’s not a privileged thing. Plenty of countryside out there. The film is about that difficult time when you finish treatment, it’s a very weird time.

HamSad · 10/09/2024 07:29

It would have been a great opportunity to highlight the hard work of the people who treat cancer, and perhaps the continued need to carry out research. Instead it was a smug advert for herself and her picture-perfect family. They live a life of unparalleled luxury based on money we have given and carry on giving them. It's putrid.

Hallamlass · 10/09/2024 07:32

"putrid" 😂
Honestly, the overblown language on here!

SeptemberWitch · 10/09/2024 07:36

Money makes life infinitely easier to navigate. They seem like good people and very family orientated. Sadly most people with cancer will have to battle not just the disease but the failing NHS.

ShiftySquirrel · 10/09/2024 07:41

It was so personal and came from the heart, so I liked it. The best thing was instantly recognising Norfolk before finding out it was filmed there.

Yes, this! I'm not a royalist at all, but I feel the need to defend them.
I had a brief spell of being unfairly torn apart on SM, it was soul destroying and an absolute eye opener.
I wouldn't ever want the royals' role despite the wealth.

Meecrowavay · 10/09/2024 07:43

Find it OTT and tbh, for me, I'm done with this family. Many families dealing with cancer will have to undertake additional work, second jobs etc. to make ends meet. We know they don't have this worry but William does hardly any work as it is and he's done even less in recent months. I can't help feeling it's been a convenient excuse for him to take an extended break. Except when it's been something worth attending that is - Taylor Swift; cup finals etc etc. He also let Kate take the flack with all the photo editing furore too when he could have stepped in there and silenced that noise quickly.

A much stronger message than this contrived film would have been him really stepping up to the plate in recent months and being seen to do much more public facing work, in place of his wife, father and aunt who have all been suffering poor health. Queen Elizabeth would have read the room on this better and have done so in a similar position. Even Charles, in his seventies, and suffering cancer too, is doing more work than the POW.

Hallamlass · 10/09/2024 07:47

@Meecrowavay you don't know how ill she is, or was - it's easy to judge.

Ghilliegums · 10/09/2024 07:51

I am very glad that Kate is now cancer free and I think the kids are very charming.

But I laughed out loud when I first saw the video as it was so corny. I thought it was a piss take. When I realised it was real I pulled myself together a bit.

CurlewKate · 10/09/2024 07:55

Low point-the butterfly. High point-the correct use of objective pronoun.

Actually there is some truth in that last paragraph.

So if she says nothing and asks for privacy conspiracy theorists believe she has been murdered and the royal family are covering it up.
If she opens herself up and shares more personal family videos she is twee, self indulgent and removed from reality.

I'm glad I'm not in the public eye and don't face this constant scrutiny and judgement.

spot on!

Warmfeet · 10/09/2024 08:06

Haven't read all the comments, but live in a forestry area, where there are warnings on all the log stacks warning people not to climb them as it's so dangerous. Not due to falling off, but due to them starting to roll and squashing people.

PeachBlossom1234 · 10/09/2024 08:08

I loved it. I’m so happy she’s doing well and has finished treatment. When you’ve had cancer you look at life differently and you celebrate different things and milestones. You also want to make special memories for your children (my daughter was 5 when I was diagnosed). I thought it was perfect, and showed how close her circle is…I wish I had that amount of love and support when I was going through it.

Nousernameforme · 10/09/2024 08:09

I'm glad she's feeling better but whoever was in charge of scripting and directing that bit of pretentious narrative media needs sacking.
And no I very much doubt that Kate and William were sat up brainstorming ideas right so after jumping on hay bales let's play cards under the tree I've been leaning against while staring at the sky in a knowing manner. Fml

Hallamlass · 10/09/2024 07:47

@Meecrowavay you don't know how ill she is, or was - it's easy to judge.

Correct. And I want to be clear I'm not having a go at Kate personally. But we do know that they have significant family support, the best medical support and access to various royal staff and admin support, and the kids are all in school, so the excuse that William needed to be with her all the time is a stretch. He doesn't have the foresight to see how this looks for him. Or he doesn't care. I think we are really seeing the measure of this man, as a public figure, and it's nothing like his grandmother or even his father (and let's face it, that's a low bar with Charlie!)
