What do you think happens after you die ?

I’m waiting on “you’ll be dead and that’s that“ 🤣
but genuinely curious as to what everyone else thinks happens , I know it’ll be like before you were born , you won’t know but what if after life/recantation is a thing ? I’ve come to terms with the fact tomorrow isn’t promised but what if there’s afterlife and we get born into a horrible abusive family ? In that case I think I’d rather just be nothing ? What you all think ? Love to read these threads thought I’d make one myself 😆

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear or if I rained on atheists parades

Unless you're the Pope, I think everyone here will be able to cope with your opinion? 😳

Why on earth do you think your opinion has the power to rain on anyone's parade?

@SaffronsMadAboutMe

i was trying to word it is politely, but gave up, so thank you.

Dearblossom · 08/09/2024 23:42

I think numerous things depending on what day it is. I think for some the idea of seeing dead relatives who were nasty is pretty scary frankly so I hope I get a choice on who I see if thats the case. I think the idea of some spark or life force is interesting and wonder where and how that goes/leaves the body.

Sometimes I think we will wake up on some kind of space ship, as if we have been in deep sleep and have to start another life, and another and another like a netflix box set that never ends 😆

Fancy having the arrogance to think that your opinion is the final word on what happens after death 😂

@GalileoHumpkins
@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

& anyone else who said similar.

im glad I wasn't alone in thinking this

I'm a Muslim so I believe when I die I will be brought for judgement of my deeds infront of God. Also believe in angel of death taking souls up. Also to reunite with loved ones that have passed.
This brings me comfort in knowing I will be seeing my dad again in another lifetime. He was a great father and I miss his presence.
Ofcourse I understand someone who doesn't believe in a higher being won't share my view so I get that.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/09/2024 23:49

On FRIDAY 30 August Radio 4 on “P M”
about 10 minutes before the end, there was a riveting discussion with a resuscitation expert about the mind going on living beyond the point at which the rest of the body had died. He said death is not binary- one minute alive, then dead at what appears to be the point of death but a lingering process.

He describedhow people in this state recall every detail if their life etc. It was not about suggesting a soul goes on. But it was certainly astounding I thought.

The man speaking has written a book called, ‘Lucid Dying’.

Actually for whoever is interested in all of this , the BSF , Bible study fellowship is starting a whole year online course on Revelation. It will cover all of it.

@somereallyniceadvice

why would I waste. Year studying something I don't believe in?

you can believe it all you want, it doesn't make it true.

This is fascinating. A scientific study about what does actually happen straight after death and what Death really is. It was on radio 4

@Dmsandfloatydress I am sorry I had nrtft and missed this from you, but have just posted about presumably the same thing I heard on PM.

God needs a better speechwriter.

It's a translation so might sound a bit clunky.

I don't think anything happens as such. Maybe there is some way in which the essence of ones self becomes part of the universe or part of new life, but I don't think one is aware of it.

I'm Jewish (and atheist) and Jewish tradition is kind of 'Life is the bit that matters; after, who knows?'

@Echobelly

i really love the Jewish traditions/sayins & outlook on life!

Really interesting answers , death doesn’t scare me cause I feel like you just won’t know you are but it’s the way you die that scares me . Will it be painful? Like being aware that you’re dying and being aware of it scares me , all I can hope is that I die an old lady in her sleep! But I feel like you’d have to be really lucky .

@Ella2001

yrah, I'm with you. I'm not scared of being dead. But I'm scared if the 'dying' bit.

i choose to believe that we are reunited with lived people & pets.

the logistics are a bit confusing. Say I wa 15 when my Nana died, I'm 55 now / maybe we go back to those ages?! But then we meet up with my Dad and he was 65 when he died, how can he be the last age he was when my Nana died & the age he was to me when he died?

I don't like the idea of us not being in our own bodies, I'm hanging out for actual hugs from them both

im sure it'll all work out 🤗

in reality i think it's just 'nothing' but i let myself build this afterlife fantasy because i can't cope with fully believing I'll never have a bear hug, or hear my Dads voice again 😭

LondonLass61 · 09/09/2024 00:24

I think that we die every night when we go to sleep but at some stage we won't wake up.
I agree with a PP that when I've seen someone who's died, I thought that it looked like their essence/soul had left their body.
I often wonder if death could be a great adventure where we get to start again with all the knowledge and experience that we've accrued....
Interesting thread.

Ubugly · 09/09/2024 00:30

I wonder this but if you have 2 widows, who do you meet? If you die as a baby do you stay a baby or disabled?

If there's something after death then when we can't cope why not leave this world and all join them?

Newsenmum · 08/09/2024 22:15

I feel like we all desperately want something to happen and all hate the idea of our whole lives being for nothing. However I’m pretty sure nothing actually happens. We are one of
billions of animals that come and go.

I feel like this thread proves we don't all desperately want something to happen and we don't all hate the idea of our whole lives being for nothing, which is nice. 😊

I believe in the Jungian idea of universal consciousness

And as a Christian that fits in with what I think, no individually but one consciousness (with God)

I know there is a soul and believe we live on. I had a bereavement last week of someone very close (I've now been with 6 people who have died) and I'm always struck by how they look after death. Just like a vessel, the essence of them (the soul) has gone.

Your words resounded with me. I will look into the Jungian idea and yes, having passed our loved ones don't look the same, their spirit has gone, my reaction was like a human shell. X

Do you feel the same when you see a dead squirrel on the side of the road though? We register a complete lack of animation in a formerly living being but only with humans do we then conclude it's soul must have left the body.

That's interesting what you said about 'a vessel, the essence of them (the soul) has gone." I've seen two corpses at funerals so far and that has always struck me and it's actually convinced me that we do have souls. The corpses just look like empty things. Totally hollow...the life force has gone. Not quite sure how to explain it, but I wonder if it would change the minds of people who don't believe in a soul or spirit if they had actually seen a corpse in real life.

aurynne · 09/09/2024 00:53

"Recantation" sounds great, I'd go for that 😁

Yes - I do feel the same. They look like empty vessels.

Not ‘only humans’ for me.

Nothing

KenAdams · 09/09/2024 01:16

Sciene has the answer. Energy can neither be created or destroyed do we do as every living thing does, we go back to the earth. I believe every religion says this in one way or another, the importance of water and fire as part of death in all religions is interesting to me, given their differing ideologies. Even if this is the only concept my simple human brain can understand, it's still a fact, so any other theory cannot stand against it?

The whole of us doesn't become the whole of something else, we become parts of many different things. A grain of sand at the bottom of the ocean, a fly, a bolt of lightning.

Some of the other religious posters mention conformance, belief and compliance to another person to gain forgiveness and acceptance. These are all human emotional concepts and don't translate to other living things so I can't make head or tail of that. Surely we're not arrogant enough to believe this only applies to our niche species? If so, from how early on? Did neanderthals go to heaven?

I'd be interested to hear from other religions that aren't Christianity. Thank you to the Muslim poster as well.

There plenty of research on child past life memories now. There's a certain consistency to their stories that made me pay attention. Also it's pretty standard in all the cases that children forget these memories by about aged 7. I actually think we do reincarnate and we have a soul but our little monkey brains can't process the mechanisms of that. As a nurse I once experienced a patient telling me about his out of body experience after he had flatlined and resuscitated in coronary care. That was quite weird. I also don't think that reincarnation belongs to any religion as such it's just a part of us as beings and what we do. It's believed to be the case across multiple religions.
