Keir Starmer "not naming my children"

Misthios · 08/09/2024 09:35

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 08/09/2024 10:19

I support this. Keir Starmer acknowledges the number of children he has, is married to their mother, that is all we need to know. Agree about the observation about the possibilities of anti-semitism towards them.

Whereas with Boris Johnson, the issue was (and maybe still is if allegations are correct) that not all his children were/are acknowledged and the disgraceful treatment towards their mothers. The current wife he has 'buyers remorse' over, and far worse.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/09/2024 09:48

But why would you want to print names of kids in the first place? What does it matter?

I wasn't commenting specifically on this issue, but journalism likes to print everything, because it's all information, and the public like to know. If when reading a story the reader would ask a question, then the job of the journalist is to answer that question. If people are mentioned, readers like to know who they are.

igivein · 08/09/2024 10:19

Now you see I don’t think he’s gone far enough - if he doesn’t want to discuss his kids (which I agree with) then he shouldn’t- at all.
I don’t want to know their names, but neither do I want to know that they spent the summer ‘negotiating hard for a German shepherd dog, but have settled for a Siberian kitten’
I want him to use interview time to tell us about his policies and intentions, and this sort of fluff stops him (or more probably excuses him) from doing that.

  • We never did for Boris either.

Slightly different circumstances, grant you...*

Nor did he.

😂

I wouldn't say I care enough, but it's what I do for a living and know it takes seconds. Especially with a relatively unusual surname. So it's not "we're keeping it private", it's "we're relying on the goodwill of the press not to disclose".

Get a hobby, OP.

That's about pets, though.

Not sure what that has to do with my post? Or how you leap from what I’ve said to pedophilia? That says more about you than whoever you are trying to malign in your comment.

I’m not advocating for finding their names out - just stating that by not naming his children (ie or clarifying whether he has two boys/girls etc, given his conflicting references to them) makes people suspicious of his position on certain political issues. Issues and positions on them that, as the PM, voters have a right to understand.

If one of his children is trans it's no-one's business to know so it's understandable that Starmer chooses not to refer to his DC's names.

If the children were once Jack and Jill and are now Jane and Jill then that would confirm the rumours. And if in the future the child de-trans that would lead to further speculation as to the names, etc.

We don't need to know either way.

Am I the only one who is more interested in names and pictures of his pets?

he said the kitten was called Prince, if that helps!

How sad would you have to be to go and look this up?

I give no shits about his personal family set up and dynamics.

I care about HIS skills how he runs the country.

No. It doesn't make "most people suspicious".
I don't care about his children. I don't care if they're Goths or into Cottage Core or press wild flowers or dress like unicorns for parties.
None of our business.

Not at the expense of his children we don't.

Yes and it would be a GDPR breach, so the UK press won’t do it. Sensible of him.

Is it really? To publish public information like someone's full name?

Why would anyone do that, though?
No need.

Nah he said that was a slip of the tongue. Which you wouldn’t in those circumstances, probably.

Try to read it again - I did not say ‘Most’ people.

And yes, it does make SOME people, especially those advocating for women’s rights and the safe medical and psychological support for vulnerable children.

PandoraSox · 08/09/2024 10:23

Why did you start this thread @Misthios? What were you hoping to get out of it?

Orangeandgold · 08/09/2024 10:23

I wouldn’t name my children either. Are they my employees? Don’t they have their own lives?

If a creepy stalker type person wants to look them up - so be it. But what’s the problem? People end up gossiping and focusing on the wrong things. We’ve had enough PM dragging their personal lives into work and that hasn’t served us at all - it just means the public can focus on useless news whilst they played games.

pizzaHeart · 08/09/2024 10:23

StuckOnTheCeiling · 08/09/2024 10:18

There’s a difference between private and secret. He’s keeping it private, he knows it’s not secret.

All politicians have human dimensions. Complaining that if his kid is trans he will be influenced by that is like complaining that he’ll be influenced by his wife being Jewish, or complaining that he’ll be influenced by having children at all. Maybe one of his kids is trans, all I know about that is that it is none of our business.

This^
Gavin Wiliamson’s wife was TA when he was Secretary of State for education. I don’t think he was influenced by that judging by his decisions. Not much good was done for TAs

It’s also probably not true.

BornToBeWokeFree · 08/09/2024 10:24

People might not know this, but his father was a toolmaker.

Zanatdy · 08/09/2024 10:25

Pretty sure his son has been named in the press before but other child not. Of course anyone can access public records but why would you? He’s smart to keep them out of the public eye whilst they are growing up. Their father’s public life is his choice. Boris and Carrie kept the little ones out of the public eye too, very sensible

Zonder · 08/09/2024 10:25

It's quite funny that some people are more concerned about Starmer not naming his children than about Johnson not acknowledging his.

Exactly. Easier to answer questions about some nonsense than a serious question.

I guess it’s different for minors. You need parental consent.
