Keir Starmer "not naming my children"

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

This thread makes me wonder if you should be in the kind of job that involves looking up people's records. Why on earth are you on here telling everyone how easy it is to find out personal information?

It may be that OP is employed to actually be doing something else... but still spends a good part of her working day looking up information about other people. Nosey people are indefatigable, they just will not ever stop.

I wouldn't say I care enough, but it's what I do for a living and know it takes seconds. Especially with a relatively unusual surname. So it's not "we're keeping it private", it's "we're relying on the goodwill of the press not to disclose".

What’s wrong with that?

EdithBond · 08/09/2024 11:25

I assume he meant he doesn’t want to publicly name his kids, even though (technically) we all legally have to publicly name our kids by registering their birth. I despise the entire ‘first family’ approach to politics. I couldn’t care less about a politician’s private life. I don’t want to know who their partner is any more than I’m interested in my doctor’s, train driver’s or cashier’s partner. It’s irrelevant, other than to be friendly to them. All I care about is how they serve me and others.

Yes, that definitely comes across.

Misthios · 08/09/2024 11:26

And we've resorted to the playground name-calling so I'm out.

If Starmer had named his children, he'd be getting flack for that too.

I think OP's job must be ferreting around on Ancestry or Findmypast.

Good. I hope if you're as unethical in your work as you come across as on here, that you get found out and face consequences. It's unacceptable.

So did my late husband, and I DO mind, as he would have done. I'm glad you don't, but you don't speak for everyone either.

In general it's perceived as tasteless to use disabilities and medical conditions as insults. And yes, name tweaking is childish humour anyway.

So instead of lecturing people why not let people just make their own minds up if it's funny or not. Getting offended over such silly things is a waste of your time
People have the right to crack jokes, Ricky Gervais talks about this alot and he's right, it's a choice to be offended.

I used to feel sorry for the Blair kids, reports in the media about which school they were off to, being drunk in the gutter, being a nepo kid millionaire.

imagine you are Euan Blair, I bet when he introduces himself to people a lot will immediately ask if he’s Tony Blair kid. Even now, decades later. Whereas if his name hadn’t been in the press so much people wouldn’t put 2+2 together. Blair is a common surname.

i wouldn’t like to spend my life being known as X’s kid no matter who that person is.

I think that's the point though. They are millionaires children and their dads Prime Minister in charge of the country. I sort of want to know what they're up to. Well I want someone to be able to.

I mean hopefully they won't be up to anything but given some offspring of the rich and famous it's not a given is it.

JessyCarr · 08/09/2024 11:36

Come off it OP. He doesn’t think it’s a secret. He knows what the GRO is. He’s just reminding everyone that despite the fact his kids’ names are officially in the public domain (like everyone else’s), they remain private individuals and he wants that respected.

Why? They’re teenagers at school. What on earth are they going to be doing that is relevant to the country?

Araminta1003 · 08/09/2024 11:38

Unfortunately there is too much politics going on with SEN children in private schools etc. So it is only a matter of time before someone goes on eg Twitter/X and does this and nought the establishment can do about it. Although I completely agree that the names of politicians should be kept out of people’s business. I think because the Royal children have duties some people have expectations that the PM’s children are also wheeled out. Sunday’s children were commented on openly etc. Is there an official press ban on this?

Araminta1003 · 08/09/2024 11:39

Sorry that was meant to say Sunak’s children

StarrySkiesAtMidnight · 08/09/2024 11:40

He’s named his son publicly in the past, but has never disclosed his daughter’s name.

The son had a totally unremarkable name so I can only assume the reason he won’t name his daughter is because whatever she’s called makes Paula Yates’s choice of names look normal & boring! 🤣

And there we have the reason why he has to maintain their privacy.

Whatever they do is none of your business and nothing to do with the UK public.

RichardsGear · 08/09/2024 11:41

Why the f would anyone be interested in what a PM or former PM's children are up to?
And if someone goes to the bother of arse farting around on official websites to find out the names of the Starmer children, then I'd think they were pretty sad, tbh. What material difference will it make to your day to day life to know that they're called James and Olivia (other names are available)?

Presumably after doing so, he gave more thought to the issue and changed his mind.

Hallamlass · 08/09/2024 11:42

I know, pointless and unpleasant.

Araminta1003 · 08/09/2024 11:42

@saraclara - I completely agree. But it is not going to happen because of what is going on around the politcs of private schools. And this is exactly why he should have never done that deal with the far left ideologists in his party. That was his choice.

You can choose to be offended for sure. But punching down and saying it’s the choice of the person whether they find that offensive is a bit of a get-out from unpleasant behaviour isn’t it?

Araminta1003 · 08/09/2024 11:45

Maybe we need some more specific laws surrounding the privacy of children of public figures.

Nope

I have a stoma. It's funny.

I'll carry on having a sense of humour about life rather than make the choice to find everything offensive and making my life miserable.

Why on earth do you want to know what two secondary aged children are up to??
