Not sure if I just saw someone cut off their ankle tag. Do I ring police?

In public toilets, I was washing my hands when someone came out of toilet next to the one I was in and put what I think was an ankle tag in the bin then they left. Very shifty looking person.
I glanced in the bin after they left and saw what looked like a black strap with a small grey box attached to it.
I've googled ankle tags and pretty sure that's what it was.
Do i call the police??

It belongs to EMS - not the police, it will have an ID number on it.
you could hand it into police - but whoever cut it off will be on some type of curfew or GPS monitoring so police or probation will be alerted

GuestFeatu · 07/09/2024 13:30

No 😆 he'll get found out if that's what happened.

ebg · 07/09/2024 13:31

They will get caught anyway when they need to be home and the monitor goes off lol

OhmygodDont · 07/09/2024 13:31

When they are not home by curfew they will know 🤣

I'd call the police personally. By the time the alarm goes off when they don't make the curfew, who knows what they could have done by then!

Pussycatmom · 07/09/2024 13:37

I wouldn’t

Well, yes. Exactly.
This creature who should be under 24 hour monitoring is out there unwatched, he clearly has something unpleasant planned Sad

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/09/2024 13:39

Ems and probation will get a tamper notification, police if it's a Buddi or bail tag there might be an EMS contact number on there. It could be it's a curfew, it might be a GPS trail monitor for a high risk DA perpetrator you don't know what the risks are.
You're not obliged to, but I would call Ems/police

Scentedjasmin · 07/09/2024 13:40

I would definitely call the police/retrieve it and find the number. It could be that he's not allowed near certain areas and he could have a history of something like domestic violence.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 07/09/2024 13:40

I would actually as if it’s a GPS device, they may be intending to enter their exclusion zone to make contact with their victim. If it’s just a curfew or alcohol monitoring tag, EMS will be notified and will (eventually) alert their probation officer and there will be consequences. It could be that it’s simply the last day of having to wear their tag, you’re not meant to cut them off but you can do. Either way, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 07/09/2024 13:49

If she’s left it in the toilet bin, she’s an idiot. Surely the point would be to leave it in a drawer at home so that it looks like she’s always there?

He?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/09/2024 13:55

I assume they as soon as they are removed they will alert the EMS/police to that fact, otherwise people would just remove them and leave them at home.

SquatWeightaMinute · 07/09/2024 13:58

I am fairly sure that whoever monitors them gets an alert if they are tampered with. I wouldn’t get involved with this.

Exactly what I thought! Clearly I have the cop-on to be a career criminal. Then again, this person got caught in the first place, soo…

Put it on a train somewhere

It's Saturday and they probably want to go out past their curfew.

In all seriousness what would you expect the police to do? They'll be notified if the tag has been tampered with, my old neighbour had one and I'm sure if it was that easy to take off he would have done it and left it at home 😂

You don't know why they are tagged, yes it could be for something serious but they also tag people for less serious crimes to avoid overcrowding in prisons.

Mind your business. They will know soon enough.

Are you sure it wasn't a security tag from something? Some of them do look like ankle tags

This.

It would ensure the police are on high alert if there is a particular history or potential threat. The tag SHOULD set off an alarm but it may not. This alarm would probably go to a third party rather than directly to the police. You are the safety backup. This alerts the police who then can check up that an alert definitely has come through and make a risk assessment. It could save time. That time might be vital.

Babbahabba · 07/09/2024 14:32

It'll get found out soon enough and he'll get recalled to prison. More fool him.

What I thought.

I'm sure if the OP posts a photo of it, it'll be more clear.

WinterMorn · 07/09/2024 14:38

Ex- probation officer here. Call the Police. For starters, cutting off the tag would be criminal damage. Secondly, this will be a breach of a licence or whatever order they may be on.
