Just noticed Christmas chocolates in the supermarket today. Every year I hear people say it's in the shops too early, but I also get that some
People want to start buying ahead of time

For me 1st November would be ok

i am shocked to see huge boxes of quality street near the front of the shops in September

HelenWheels · 05/09/2024 06:31

shops are chaos anyway

Edingril · 05/09/2024 06:35

Whenever,, I only buy it when I feel in the mood

April! Having to wait til August means my Christmas lists are basically guesswork until I get confirmation stuff is on the shelves 😂 This thread reminds me actually I need to go browse the ASDA Christmas aisles, they start with the best stuff and sell out fast 👀

(And yes, it's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me)

Me too!

I've already started buying gifts & decorations 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/09/2024 07:12

Preferably after Halloween and Bonfire Night, but it doesn’t bother me to see it all sooner. I don’t usually buy anything 🎄 until November.

reluctantbrit · 05/09/2024 07:16

End of October. I don't like Halloween, so I could happily cut that out and make space.

Advent is too late as I need to get things in beforehand. I also like the anticipation and that makes it easier for me to survive the dark evenings and crap weather.

Laserwho · 05/09/2024 07:18

After Halloween and bonfire night so second week of November. Our Asda has been stocking Christmas chocolate for 3 weeks and mince pies just arrived 🙄

rzb · 05/09/2024 07:20

Hmm...

I like to be able to plan and buy ahead, when I have the time and opportunity to do so, but not have to walk amongst oodles of xmas stuff in shops for a third of the year.

On Planet Rzb, there would year-round availability of xmas products online. Ads for xmas products would only be permitted to run in December. Bricks and mortar shops would be permitted to sell xmas products, and play endless xmas music, from mid December. Outdoor xmas markets would run from mid-November, comprising food and drink stalls arranged around a skating rink, and opening at sunset each day. The craft/gift/whatever stalls join them from December. School xmas activities happen only on the last day of term. A single day in December is nominated for all after school clubs to hold their xmas parties, and children have to choose which one they want to attend.

There is no tinsel on Planet Rzb.

Disabledmomma · 05/09/2024 07:32

Post rememberance day for me.

AuntieMarys · 05/09/2024 07:34

November. Not that I buy any of it.
We ignore the whole thing

Mintyt · 05/09/2024 07:36

Now, mid November, but when my three children were younger the earlier the better as could add little bits into the weekly shop and put away for Christmas.

itispersonal · 05/09/2024 07:37

After bonfire night!

Can't cope with it being in the shops from end of August , same with Halloween stuff it just brings an abrupt end to summer and although I like autumn I always want summer to be a bit longer.

Phase2 · 05/09/2024 07:45

1st December. I'm sick of being forced from one consumer opportunity to another. Might encourage people to spend less and simplify.

isthereaway · 05/09/2024 07:58

AuntieStella · 04/09/2024 18:33

The weekend of Advent Sunday

But if people really can't hold off, then at least not before Remembrance Day

I agree entirely.

MiddleAgedDread · 05/09/2024 08:03

November
i was in home bargains at weekend and there’s summer garden / holiday stuff, Halloween stuff and xmas stuff in consecutive aisles, they might as well just get the Easter stuff out too!

Nagatha · 05/09/2024 08:04

It bothers me more that they start displaying Easter chocolate on Boxing Day. I have zero willpower and end up eating mini eggs all day for months

socks1107 · 05/09/2024 08:09

End of October ( it used to be like this)

Misthios · 05/09/2024 08:10

People who are buying mince pies NOW are not stocking up for Christmas, because the shelf life of mince pies isn't long enough to last to Christmas. Personally I like the German lebkuchen which Aldi do and will be happy to see them back in stock but would also happily buy those all year round as they are tasty and not particularly festive in my head.

And then you get to the idea of "spreading the cost" and many people only feel they have to do that because they buy into the idea of needing all the huge quantities and food which retailers push. DD and I were in The Range yesterday buying her notebooks to go back to Uni and the amount of absolute christmas SHITE they had, like a £129 cooking Santa statue (wtf?) so I suppose if you see that sort of shite as Christmas essentials rather than wasteful shite, you do need to spread the cost of acquiring it.

Whale80ne · 05/09/2024 08:17

It's faintly depressing seeing Christmas products for sale at the start of September, it's not of earth shattering importance but I'd rather confine overtly "Christmas" marketing/ products and especially music to December/ advent if it starts in the last week of November.

It's just depressing because of the feeling of winter pressing in. I feel the same about all the "back to school" marketing when schools have barely broken up for the holidays. A faint sense of things looming.

I'm not really a Christmas fan and like the relaxed, long days of the summer holiday season even though I have to work!

Overtly Christmasy stuff is usually tat and processed food anyway - buying presents ahead of time is nothing to do with filling the shops with jangling tat and marketing processed sugar.

Whale80ne · 05/09/2024 08:19

oops double post

footgoldcycle · 05/09/2024 08:21

I will say. It always makes me happy when the Christmas sandwich's come into the shops. I always enjoy them

Needmorelego · 05/09/2024 08:39

@MiddleAgedDread there seems to be a lot more summer stuff left over this year than there usually is (not the greatest summer weather wise?).
The shops will be keeping it out on the shelves because they want it to be gone as they will have little space in the stock room to store it.
The Halloween and Christmas stock is coming into the stores but again no space in stockrooms so it has to go on the shelf.
So you end up with a mix.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/09/2024 08:41

After Halloween. However I am happy to be able to buy Christmas things online well before that! I already have my Christmas wrapping paper and have bought and wrapped the presents for my youngest grandchild and my husband.

Needmorelego · 05/09/2024 08:42

Anything that's in the "Christmas Aisle" doesn't have to be bought just for Christmas though.
I almost bought a nightlight from B+M yesterday simply because I thought it was cute and I actually need a nightlight.
I will probably go back later today or tomorrow and get one.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/09/2024 08:44

@footgoldcycle the hospital where I work buys in sandwich fillings and makes them to order. I love it when the Christmas Mix filling appears! It isn't usually available until the beginning of December though....
