When would you be happy to see Christmas stuff in the shops

Just noticed Christmas chocolates in the supermarket today. Every year I hear people say it's in the shops too early, but I also get that some
People want to start buying ahead of time

For me 1st November would be ok

Mid December, and I would ban Halloween or at least the selling and display of hideous tat.

Happy for others to disagree.

@BerthaFlapjack why do you want Halloween banned??

Endica1 · 04/09/2024 20:45

End November

Andoutcomethewolves · 04/09/2024 20:50

Probably mid November so that advent calendars, decorations etc can be bought in time for December 1st. Would prefer no actual Christmassy stuff (markets, events, putting up the tree & decorations etc) to happen until 1 Dec. For me it makes it so much less special for the shops to be filled with Christmas stuff etc from late August, as they were round here - that's still summer!!!

BerthaFlapjack · 04/09/2024 20:54

YeahComeOnThen Halloween as a concept is ok, but ask any bunch of marauding teenagers what the true meaning is and they haven't a clue. Ditto small children out on a sugar hunt.

It is all the cheap tat, generally made by underpaid workers in China, then shipped here, which is the issue. Some of it is hideous, offensive and completely unnecessary.

I just roll my eyes, refuse to do trick or treat, and avoid going to the shops as far as possible. Ditto Christmas.

Penguinhippo · 04/09/2024 21:06

1st November.

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2024 21:13

Yea after Halloween. Clear the shelves of spooky tat and replace with Christmas cheer!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/09/2024 21:15

November

RabbitsRock · 04/09/2024 21:15

After Bonfire Night. I work in a large store & we have had Christmas stuff in since mid August. The main tree usually goes up around now. I do love Christmas but Aug/Sep is way too early!

CapitanSandy · 04/09/2024 21:16

Mid November

ploppingalong · 04/09/2024 21:18

It's only 3 paydays away so although it seems really early, for people with lots to buy for or
Parents with small children it's time to start buying.

Werweisswohin · 04/09/2024 21:18

I'm not big on Christmas tbh, so perhaps end Nov at the earliest.

Fundays12 · 04/09/2024 21:19

Mid November for me

ScottishSheepie · 04/09/2024 21:20

After Halloween

HandShoe · 04/09/2024 21:22

Beginning of December (Advent calendars allowed earlier of course) ideally. But if it must be earlier can we at least have it later on than bonfire night - I want to feel we get some autumn and not straight from summer school holidays to mince pies.

DappledThings · 04/09/2024 21:23

First day of Advent. Which this year is actually 1 December. Last year was not until 3 December and next year will be 30 November.

ploppingalong · 04/09/2024 21:23

Doggymummar · 04/09/2024 20:07

Mid august. Some of us like to spread the cost. I already got my Bailey's and Tia Maria and quality streets.

I did this last year. I can't remember how many times I had to replace it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/09/2024 22:13

Just to add to other posts earlier in the thread - I'm not a Christmas hater at all. I really do enjoy it. But the fact that it seeps into 3 or 4 months of the year according to the shops and TV (and blooming Mumsnet) just dilutes and distorts the pleasure of it for me.

Babbahabba · 04/09/2024 22:47

I really don't care. I don't have to buy it and it doesn't affect me in anyway, like all the other things for sale that I choose not to buy. I don't know why people get so wound up about it. Just ignore!

gaininginsight · 04/09/2024 23:30

Needmorelego · 04/09/2024 18:58

I used to work in retail.
We used to sell loads and loads of the Christmas stock.
If it was on the shelf - it sold and was then replenished and sold again.....and repeat until the big day!
The more sales the better otherwise retailers go bust.
Don't want to buy it yet - don't buy it and just ignore it.

Agree. From a business point of view retailers need to start early. They can't wait until November as they wouldn't have enough space in stockrooms or shops floor shelves to sell all that stock over a short window of time. Even if they could the two months would be absolute mayhem, more so than it is already so it's catering to the early buyers who prefer getting it done before the madness, but also having that continual stock supply over a few months that is manageable for them. They would not have enough staff to cover shops if Christmas stock was only out for 2 months.

MidwichCuckoo · 05/09/2024 00:07

If people weren't buying it now they wouldn't put it out.

SnowFrogJelly · 05/09/2024 01:39

Xmas eve

DappledThings · 05/09/2024 06:06

MidwichCuckoo · 05/09/2024 00:07

If people weren't buying it now they wouldn't put it out.

Which is why I refuse to buy anything until Advent as a pointless one-woman protest. If everyone stopped buying into the shops insisting we need to think about Christmas early then they would stop stocking it early and we could all chill out.

MoveItOnUp · 05/09/2024 06:07

I've seen mince pies already!

HelenWheels · 05/09/2024 06:12

December
i have family birthdays in november and HATE seeing christmas things before their birthdays, mid november.

so i will allow at a push 25th November.

Willoo · 05/09/2024 06:27

There’s no way it should be toward the end of November of December. Could you imagine the chaos at the shops? October/beginning of November for me although I don’t care if I see stuff now. I don’t get why people care? That’s not many pay days for people who get paid monthly.
