Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

Honestly, who cares what you look like! Nobody (who matters) is even looking never mind judging. Who are you trying to impress?
All that you owe your other passengers is to be clean and respectful of your space and theirs. Enjoy your flight!
Now for the dilemma- utilise the amazing space to get a brilliant sleep and arrive refreshed, or take full advantage of the fizz and food! (I tend to favour a light meal and a snooze and then a cup of tea while reading before we land.)

Virgin...

WhoOfWhoville · 05/09/2024 10:53

I think you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience if you put a little bit of effort into your appearance instead of sitting there looking at everyone feeling like the poor relation or that you stand out for the wrong reasons.

You can probs get a nice matching set of loungewear pretty inexpensively in Tesco or Sainsbury’s - and perhaps pick up a colour to do your roots. A bit of self tan facial moisturiser always amazes me with how glowy and fresh I look the next morning.

Loubilou23 · 05/09/2024 10:56

I travel business and first a lot - never dress up, just wear nice joggers and top (spanx travel sets usually) and look clean and respectable.

No one else dresses up, most people are in jeans/joggers and same as me, respectable and clean looking but not full on dressed up.

Eh? I’ve never dressed for first class and always travel for comfort. Make up gets in the way too. No one cares what you look like at all.

I recall the days when Virgin had the fabulous lounge at Terminal 3 where you could get your hair done at Cowshed , a massage etc if you booked ahead. Slots were always difficult to get. At one point they did have on board technicians as well. Haven't flown them in years now as use other airlines now.

One of my friends used to be an onboard beautician for virgin. She got to massage and manicure a lot of famous (and non famous) mile-high arms and hands!
I'm not sure if they even offer this service anymore. Still, a fun airline to fly with.

Okay duck, different strokes. Moisturiser isn’t make up though.

Virgin Upper Class is not First Class.
It is a Business Class product and priced as such.

onwardsup4 · 05/09/2024 12:10

If you feel uncomfortable with how you look go and get your hair/nails done and a new outfit. If you are ok with it you will be fine as you are , maybe file your nails 😂

It’s equivalent to BA Club World. It’s fantastic but not first class. I would take it any day as it’s a real treat.

First Class is a limited product these days and only flies on certain routes. A lot of planes are two or three class being economy and business plus premium economy. Four class with first is harder to find.

Agreed.
I was so sad when BA retired all of its 747s, slashing the airline's First Class capacity. Sitting in the nose was always such a treat!

Virgin Upper Class explains then all the price gaps we have been speaking about in various posts.

Harassedevictee · 05/09/2024 12:50

@L0bstersLass sadly I have never made it to first class but have flown business several times. I would love to do the 747 nose section as it looks so cosy and private.

I was fortunate to get in there on a number of occassions. But always due to Avios. I don't have that kind of cash!

HotHotChilli · 05/09/2024 13:06

I was gong to say Upper Class is not in the same league as First on other airlines early on (and its really business, as Virgin are the only ones to have Upper Class as they call it) but I did not want to sound mean.

To the OP just enjoy your journey all the same!

Harassedevictee · 05/09/2024 14:35

@HotHotChilli I think it’s how we express it. Most of us would be thrilled with Upper Class but recognise it’s not First.

The whole Virgin Upper Class experience with lie flat beds for me was such a treat and like the OP I would be so excited to do it again.

Butterworths · 05/09/2024 14:59

I flew First with BA a lot in my teens and 20s as my dad worked for them and these were the good old days when people would upgrade each other as favours. It was so fun! There was a library of films to chose from then they'd come to you on a little tape thing that you played at your seat - this . I remember the food being amazing.

I am too tight to pay for it myself now. I fly business for work which I do enjoy.

TheBossOfMe · 05/09/2024 15:34

I really rate Virgin Upper Class - it’s extremely good and has many of the things that BA only offer in first (proper mattressy thing, decent duvet, PJs). Plus the Clubhouse at LHR is the bomb!

Have fun, OP, lovely cabin and lovely airline.

Rubyupbeat · 05/09/2024 15:38

You get all sorts in first, when my sons were babies we used to travel all over in first, sometimes long haul, I would look a real fright after seeing to them.
even now when just the 2 of us fly, people don't dress up like its a special occasion, just like any type of travel, as long as you are clean and tidy no one cares.

Leedsfan247 · 05/09/2024 17:44

Sadly there are no longer any dress code expectations in First or Business.
Relax and enjoy

Lampzade · 05/09/2024 17:57

Most people in First or Business class are usually dressed very casually
In fact, you can tell the one who don’t travel in first or business class because they are usually dressed up to the nines
