Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

Hi op, sorry not read the full thread. I'm ex cabin crew for a flag carrier so worked first class. Wear what you're comfortable in (no bikinis or anything offensive) and be showered etc you'll be fine. I used to find the people who dressed for first were the ones who were doing it as a one off for a special event.

Don't forget to take the amenity kit! Some of the products you can get are fantastic. Enjoy every minute.

thursdaymurderclub · 04/09/2024 21:00

oh you poor thing, it must be devastating for you! you've paid for the ticket, i assume it didn't come with a dress code? wear what you like.. no one will really care! enjoy your flight!

Do I need to go and put some effort in?! Only to have a wash and wear comfortable clothes tomorrow.

After a nine hour flight plus lead time at the airport (inclluding lounge time) you'll feel dire at the end of the trip. From the time you drop your bags and go to the lounge few (see below) will judge what you're wearing or whether your nails are done.

I do fly in Business or First occasionally. Even when freshly dressed I'm a bit of a scruff, and at times I've had staff at the airport call "madam, madam! That's the queue for First/Business!" to which I say "yes it is ... and that includes me".

Enjoy your flight.

ZwarteZwaan · 04/09/2024 21:15

Oh no I see you’ve already had your nails done OP. I was going to say leave it as you should be able to get one on your flight. Very relaxing. Enjoy your experience.

Granted I've only flown first/business a handful of times but do they really have manicurists aboard giving free treatments?

pambeesleyhalpert · 04/09/2024 21:34

Maybe her husband booked it as a treat knowing they could afford it but that OP would be intimidated but ultimately enjoy it.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/09/2024 21:39

'Honestly I’ve know millionaires who liked to carry things around in plastic bags instead of just getting a briefcase.'

this. I worked for multi millionaire for years and this was the case

chill and be nice to the people looking after you on the plane, a lot of people aren’t

They used to have masseurs on Virgin! Long gone :(

snowlady4 · 04/09/2024 22:10

Ooh lucky you!
Stop worrying and enjoy the experience.
Remember- most people in first haven't actually paid for it!-business expenses for most!
Wear your usual travel clothes, be comfortable and enjoy the little bit of luxury! Say yes to everything!

overgrowntoddler · 04/09/2024 22:18

Where are you going on which airline OP.

I hope it's long haul!

I loved flying club or first but don't forget you probably get lounge access and fast track security.

It well worth it!

Clean hair and nails moisturise. Clean clothes, plain colours are betters. I wore black loose joggers (Tesco) and a grey vest tops and a primark cardigan and Nike trainers

My mum always fly first class and it is long haul flight. Very expensive. And she dressed always in jogger and sweater 😂. she said it was her flight uniform. No one cares. People who have money they dont try to impressed others.

when i’m still single i flight first class too with my family and i dressed comfortably. Now i’m married and independent sometimes i flight business sometimes economy and still dressed comfortably. Usually jumper and joggers in the same colour, socks and crocs. I love my crocs for flight.

MellersSmellers · 04/09/2024 22:50

I bet they'll think you're REALLY wealthy if you turn up looking super scraggy! Really rich people have nothing to prove! Just be yourself.

Overtheatlantic · 04/09/2024 08:51

Can you afford to buy a couple of dresses for daytime wear? I would do that and put your hair up in a bun. Otherwise just enjoy the experience!

You are joking?

thecrossIambearing · 04/09/2024 22:57

I recall the days when Virgin had the fabulous lounge at Terminal 3 where you could get your hair done at Cowshed , a massage etc if you booked ahead. Slots were always difficult to get. At one point they did have on board technicians as well. Haven't flown them in years now as use other airlines now.

Nottogetapenny · 04/09/2024 23:35

I’ve flown first class with Emirates, just wear comfortable clothing. Trousers, t-shirt/ top and a long sleeve cardigan or cover up.
I had an individual cabin, lovely comfortable and really private! Enjoy the experience and don’t worry, it’s not about how you look, just be yourself.

HotHotChilli · 05/09/2024 02:52

So OP, you still have not said which airline and to where?

Many posters have asked inc me, as this could help you with what to expect on this journey be it the lounge or perhaps on board, or even to help you find the menu for you flight for food and drink and so on. All adds to the excitement dont you think?

Seat sale! First class is often the same price as business, so around £1000. Economy can be £500-700 long haul. So not always ridiculously extravagant.

I’ve only flown first class once, when we were emigrating with a small baby, and given the extra baggage allowance it was better value than business.

I don't think so. Where can you fly First Class for 1K?
Business Class (cheapest) tends to be 2.5 to 3 times the price of Economy.
First Class tends to be 6 times the price of Economy.
I fly First and usually wear a loosely fitted dress and trainers. Don't like waist bands digging in so no trousers.
I like BA. I think the in flight food is brilliant.

Perzival · 05/09/2024 07:13

We were always told that first class pays for the flight (if full and all rev pax) and everyone else is profit.

Misthios · 05/09/2024 07:51

My friend works for BA, quite senior in a back-office function, not cabin crew. He regularly flies to the US on business, usually standby and then gets the best seat available. He flies first a lot, lovely guy but not polished in the slightest. He is a jeans and t-shirt (M&S or Zara, not Prada or Versace).

I'm currently looking at flights to a conference in the US next year - three legs of Scotland - London - US - regional destination in US. Just looked this morning, the outbound leg is showing at £1828 in business and £2076 in first.

I have seen this happen sometimes on long haul flights, specially if we are looking for last minute tickets.

Have a great time! I remember in one First Class lounge I asked the staff for champagne and he responded “Which one?” So I was torn between Veuve and Moët. Went with the Veuve
