About time.

pointythings · 18/09/2024 13:12

I am delighted with this bit of news.

BIossomtoes · 18/09/2024 13:13

That’s really good news.

I heard a substantial clip from the John Major interview on the Today programme. It's terrifying to see the gulf in quality between him and the current crop of Tory leadership contenders.

In 1992, after the ERM fiasco & Black Wednesday, no one was saying that about him.

Yes he is correct about the EU but he also helped/part of to destroy coal mining in the UK, without anything to replace it with & took away worker rights and de unionisation of the workplace & why was that done? to make the wealthy wealthier.

He is just like all Tories after Thatcher, self serving.

imho you have to go back to Heath and previous Con leaders before you'll find an anyone who actually cared about the UK and its people.

We hadn’t been treated to 14 years of his successors then. History has been very kind to Major.

That’s really good news.

Why wait six weeks? If a law is passed, details worked out, start immediately. I doubt it needs much training for the police on this.

The difference between John Major and the recent Tory leaders was that he got things done. Not just talk. You may disagree and I did with almost all of his policies (other than on culture and sport), but you have acknowledge he had a clue.

If he had been PM in 2020, deaths would have been much fewer.

I know he cheated on his wife, and I absolutely didn't agree with a lot of his policies, but I never thought of him as corrupt and money grabbing. That sets him apart from the recent Tory leaders imho.

BIossomtoes · 18/09/2024 15:00

I’ve just watched a 45 minute interview with him by Amol Rajan on iPlayer and it’s increased my respect for him. There are some things he said I disagree with but on the whole his views are so measured and so different from the current Tory party.

He was asked how he’d like to be remembered and he replied “Fondly”.

Major was regarded as completely hopeless; the Cones Hotline? Destroyed by his own party bastards.

Badenoch actually weird. I wonder what she is like off the cuff? My guess is very abrasive. I note she rarely does anything unscripted so these Dr Who and working class McDonalds stuff must have been designed to resonate with someone. Who I don’t know

Maybe she would just prefer to be spoken about? Even if not in a positive way?

Notonthestairs · 18/09/2024 15:38

A lot of the work required for the Belfast agreement was done under Major.

Probably. I think she is a marmite choice. My money is on Jenrick to win it

Indeed. Blair finished the job and got all the credit. Major was also responsible for the National Lottery which has apparently now given nearly £50 billion to good causes in the arts and sport.

BustingBaoBun · 18/09/2024 16:24

Jenrick gives so much scope for nicknames

Train drivers have voted to back pay deal - 15% increase over three years - to resolve last remaining conflict between rail operators & unions after more than two years of strikes

That of course will be painted by some as "Labour caving in to the unions".

Naturally. It’s almost as if they hadn’t been complaining about strikes and wanted them to go on for ever.

DuncinToffee · 18/09/2024 19:37

BBC is running a story about Sue Gray being paid more than Keir Starmer.

I am not sure what the angle here is, Gray being paid too much or Starmer too little Confused

Weird

Quite a few people are paid more than the PM Confused
Are they implying some sort of puppetry going on?

bombastix · 18/09/2024 20:12

Comms! What is all chatter that is from some in the Civil Service? That decision had to be approved and was leaked.

Indeed most of the stories about the PM would seem both suspiciously high level and to originate very close to No 10.

They should finish all their appointments toot sweet or this will not stop.

Yup. I believe Simon Case is paid more.

But the real story is civil servant accepts political appointment and this proves all civil servants are evil. (And that Case might just be enjoying stirring the pot after his partygate cick ups).

I can't imagine you might be leaking these stories.
