You're not wrong, but Starmer should be able to anticipate this and avoid own goals like this.

Absolutely. The judgement is shocking and I’m very disappointed. I really didn’t want to feel like this so early. Hopefully lessons really will be learnt and they’ll knock this stuff on the head.

ilovesooty · 15/09/2024 13:24

PandoraSox · 15/09/2024 12:42

As you said Blossom, it is an avoidable own goal. Two threads running on it now. Tory HQ will be delighted.

I agree. They shouldn't have screwed up like this - avoidable.

countrygirl99 · 15/09/2024 13:25

Surely the sensible strategy is if in doubt declare and if you don't want to declare, don't accept.

Alexandra2001 · 15/09/2024 13:58

cardibach · 15/09/2024 12:15

Fair point. The systems all need to change to prevent the possibility.

Disagree on changing the system.

He simply shouldn't be accepting gifts, let alone for this wife, can you imagine Corbyn doing this.

ATM Very disappointed in the direction of travel so far.

"Lessons may well be learnt" but anyone with any moral standing wouldn't need to be learning lessons, which basically means how to manage the bad PR.

Saucery · 15/09/2024 14:46

Everyone who works for the same County education service as me has to declare gifts over £25. Potential dismissal for gross misconduct if they don’t. If a TA can’t accept a £30 necklace from a Yr6 Leaver and not declare it then why the hell does Keir Starmer’s wife get to be gifted clothes and not meet the declaration deadline? In fact, why does any politician, or their families, get to accept more than a bunch of flowers, a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine? It’s ridiculously unnecessary and makes them look grabby and grasping.
My loathing of backhanders in the form of luxury goods is cross Party btw. I expected better of Labour and I’m pissed off they have let me down on this.

What's frustrating is that it was on trying to look at declaring the gifts it turned out they had left it too late.

I agree, best to not be allowed gifts perhaps. Especially not expensive gaudy wallpaper for the PMs flat.

Saucery · 15/09/2024 14:53

Also, in my previous public service career, we couldn’t accept anything at all. Zip. Not even a box of biscuits for the staffroom. It wasn’t MI5 level public service either, no one would have got preferential treatment for handing over some ginger snaps. Rules set by a <checks notes> Labour council and continued by a Tory one.So fuck off with free clothes, holidays and wallpaper, you freeloading fuckers, when your minimum wage staff had to hand over a box of M&S chocolates or get the sack.

Double standards in public life piss me off, you may have noticed!

Cheguevarahamster · 15/09/2024 15:42

I agree. Freebies should be banned. I am pissed off about this.

PandoraSox · 15/09/2024 15:43

I am also bloody pissed off about this. Get it together Starmer, FFS. You can't afford cock ups like this.

Me too, absolutely no need for freebies totally & utterly pissed of.
another one who wasn’t allowed even a box of biscuits, rightly so as I worked with extremely vulnerable clients.

Changing the system would ensure nobody was able to do it, with whatevere motivation. Why should it be a no. No for one group of politicians and not another? That’s do7ble standards. If it’s bad (which it is) ban it completely. I’ve never looked at Corbyn’s declarations, so I do t know. He did have other jobs though, so who knows? It’s irrelevant though. It’s shouldn’t be allowed. Full stop.

Edit: direction of travel? Not sure what you mean by this in this context.

BestIsWest · 15/09/2024 18:03

I am also pissed off about it. I wouldn’t do it myself. I expect better.

I guess what i mean is i don't want people in power who have to have laws in place to stop their greed but yes on reflection we should have to put these in place but the reality is, they aren't going to place restrictions on their themselves are they?

Direction of Travel? Lab started well, settled the strikes, paid the full pay review amounts but since then, they seem to have sorta ground to a halt.

I certainly don't expect much to change for a while BUT i want to see the plan, the intention, not this "no for NHS money until reform" thats something out of a DM headline.

My DD left the NHS and she would tell you that there is huge demand and not enough staff, no amount of reform is going to change that simple equation and Darcy says this in his report too, Starmer seems to have missed that bit out.

Labour can change how we tax large expensive property but apparently thats too difficult but scrapping WFA isn't...... really? Sweetheart deals firms and individuals cut with HMRC, its not on.

When Carol Vorderman is angry at them and says many voters feel betrayed, Labour need to pull their collective fingers out.

PandoraSox · 15/09/2024 18:58

Well the upside is no one ever again can accuse us all of being uncritical of Starmer/Labour.😡

I am forever moaning about The Times but I thought this was an interesting article -
https://www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/article/early-prisoner-release-labour-tories-0t5smrplf

If its correct then it seems that Alex Chalk (ex SoS for Justice) was very aware of the issues in the system and was trying hard to resolve them but battling indecision further up and that Sunak spent 18 months trying to get additional prisons built but was blocked by planning issues (and possibly their own MPs).

Far too little, too late of course.
The issue of prison places was flagged as far back as 2015 by Theresa May who promised 1000's of additional prison places but then dropped the plans. But it provides a bit more nuance to the issue and as the article says it highlights issues that Labour will have to avoid if they are to succeed.

The other prong to this is the vast number of prisoners on remand due to court delays (be that due to the closure of courts and failure to maintain court estates, and lack of judges and appropriate representation) - more areas which require greater investment.

I read a similar piece in the Telegraph. (It came up on my Apple News).

In the opening paragraph it mentioned how it came because of Tory decisions and how they had already been running a similar scheme since last October.

I had to recheck which outlet I was reading Wink

Alexandra2001 · 15/09/2024 19:41

On prisons, education, decent probation services, rehab and stop sending so many to prison in the first place.

UK sends more per capita then almost any other european country, which is rather worrying as burglary, theft, rape, sexual offences and car crime are rarely prosecuted......

But spending on prisons isn't a vote winner is it.

PandoraSox · 15/09/2024 19:47

Really? In what context?

Apparently criticising a foreign aid policy that sends money to a country which funds a space programme is racist.

PandoraSox · 15/09/2024 20:52

Seems to have been some gunshot in the vicinity of Trump. He is safe, though.

Zonder · 15/09/2024 23:31

I don't understand this latest "assassination attempt". It seems the suspect was on the interstate near the golf course. Nowhere near trump really. What makes them think it was an assassination attempt?

And is Farage on his way over to be in the same country waving at someone who barely recognises him right there offering his shoulder for Trump to lean on?

newnamethanks · 16/09/2024 07:58

I think it was the assault rifle and assorted gun related paraphernalia that gave rise to suspicion that all was not well.
