Her experiences make interesting reading........

https://members.parliament.uk/member/4990/experience

Her spoken contributions in Parliament make interesting reading too, she has contributed more than Kempsell, and on issues affecting women.

The thing is, even if she turns out to be brilliant we should have some indication of why she’s been provided with a job on £64k a year for life. It’s not about whether she’ll be a good peer, but about why she is one at all.

Good for her, maybe she can speak out on why she received her peerage next.

You seem to avoid that issue, do you not want to know?

Why is this arguing style feeling ... familiar ?

Is there a special technique you use to propagate cats?

Bittersweet cat story

Cat makes surprise return home four days after being ‘cremated’

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/sep/06/cat-makes-surprise-return-home-four-days-after-cremation

'Not Dead Ted" 🤣

Reminds me of another article I saw a while back. Bloke's cat goes missing. He's worried sick and goes out looking for him. Eventually finds him and brings him home. Cat is traumatised and hides and it takes a week of so for him to get back to normal. He's sat with his cat when he hears the catflap and in stroles HIS cat. He'd catnapped someone else's cat which was identical to his.

I would imagine it's because she's an ally of Boris Johnson, same as Ross Kempsell. Do I think that they both should have been nominated, no but until the system changes there's not much that can be done.

I would rather Charlotte Owen than Nadine Dorries.

SerendipityJane · 06/09/2024 18:14

I would rather Charlotte Owen than Nadine Dorries.

So did Boris.

BustingBaoBun · 06/09/2024 18:39

IF Charlotte Owen attends lots, votes, makes speeches, and really as a young person, tries to make a difference to women and those of her generation, I will applaud it.

At least it's not like Lebedev, son of a KGB Agent, one of Johnson's 'choices', who has made 3 contributions in over 3 years, has no voting record, no focus areas, and no experience.

newnamethanks · 06/09/2024 18:52

Let's not forget brother Lord Joe Johnson albeit he's a serious politician and I've never heard a word against him. But. Brother of Bojo.

So you don't mind not knowing what she has done to deserve the peerage?

Kempsell, Dorries, at least they are known of. Ally of Johnson by itself isn't enough.

Plenty of dodgy peerages given out but Owen takes it to a different level.

He votes, and makes speeches a huge amount. Unlike Lord Lebedev of Siberia 😁

We will probably see more appearances from Starmer's Siberian cat Grin

A gift is a gift. I'm not complaining about Joe Johnson. I am complaining about the system that allowed his peerage to be in the gift of his brother. I feel it's unseemly, to say the least, to hand them out like Christmas tips to the milkman, particularly to close friends and relatives,

Sorry, I am a technological dunce.

Does anyone have access to the Telegraph articles? I'd like to read this.

I gave my opinion on why I thought she was given her peerage. The same reason that Kempsell was given his. I just think she's being given a hard time and not sure whether that is because she's a woman and seen as an easy target.

I agreed that being an ally wasn't enough.

It's sad but a bit overblown - Dorries being her normal clumsy worded self. Not sure what the Torygraph are up to.

Notonthestairs · 06/09/2024 19:20

He had a vast array of allies. Admittedly he probably burnt through a lot of them by the end. But there must have been dozens of experienced people that he could have chosen. She was relatively lowly (not a criticism - we all work our way up). But it does make the nomination very much outside of the standard run.

This has been posted before

https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/63063/if-youre-not-upset-by-charlotte-owen-you-should-be

She sits as a member of the legislature, making and revising laws for the rest of us until the end of her days and we pay £361 a day every time she steps foot inside the House of Lords, plus travel expenses and subsidised food

The article claims that Charlotte Owen had no voting record - but she had voted over 20 times at the time of publication (15 September 2023) and much of the period in question (July-September) Parliament would have been in recess anyway.

Ah, thanks cassie. That's very helpful. A terrible story. Those poor young men. Thank heavens Mrs Leahy campaigned as she did although it shouldn't be left to the parents.

pointythings · 06/09/2024 19:27

Clav, the argument is now more about WHY we are not allowed to know the reason why Charlotte Owens got her peerage. If she was so great and did such great things, we surely are allowed to know? And if she didn't, and didn't earn her peerage by her work... then we have even more reason for needing to know.
