Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

American Style Fridges
Having a tan

Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram

Well Hampstead Heath is Poshville isn't it?

Is wearing Lulelemon posh though? Or just what affluent yummy mummies wear? Lululemon is expensive, but that doesn't mean it's posh.

Sweaty Betty definitely isn't posh. I think the name is quite downmarket. Ladies don't sweat, they glow!

Well said!

Not necessarily - there are a few words developed from 'backronyms'!

Another one being legal jargon of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - I'm sure there are a few other kicking around. It's how languages develop over time.

Are you seriously suggesting that's where the word 'fuck' comes from, or have I misread your post? It's of 16th century Germanic origin, it's not a backronym.

Apples
Cheddar

Have really enjoyed this thread and all the deliberate misunderstandings. Vair hilair. Even the earnest wailings have been quite amusing.

Who do you know who thinks apples and cheddar are posh?

Apples literally fall off the tree in my garden and you can buy cheddar everywhere....

Tackiest of all:

'Old' money acquired through ancestral exploitation and enslavement of other people.

Belief in national superiority

Not understanding that the essence of politeness is putting other people at their ease and not classifying their consumer or sartorial choices in minute detail as posh or tacky

Totally agree, could not have read a truer word on this thread.

Thank you

Range rovers and DUBAI AND VEGAS

@JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit I bet though that your Ferrero Rocher cake was the best in the world. I wish I had thought of that back when we got married; i would have given the professional fruit cake to the guests and eaten the Ferrero Rocher one with DH. Damn, our 20th is coming up. I'm going to enquire! ❤️

My mum doesn't need to know jack! She can get on with pleasing family and friends while I enjoy my cake! 🍰

I'm still giggling that anybody would think Miller & Carter is "posh".
But in the sense of fair play, I suppose if one frequents a Wetherspoons it may be deemed as such.

But anything can seem
posh if it’s not normal to go to/have/use/own etc and is expensive to you. Giggling because some people think Miller and Carter is posh sounds very condescending. You sound a right snob.

Like the op who, as a child, thought having kitchen roll was posh, I thought houses that had downstairs loos as well as upstairs were posh. I assume blonde women who wear gilets and hunters wellies are posh (or want to be).

A trifle is a trifle…what other word would you use?

No idea but it was part of a list of “common” words. I’ve only ever seen trifle at children’s birthday parties so I’m struggling to work out how it fits into that list!

DeanElderberry · 04/09/2024 19:46

I love trifle but can't imagine anyone thinking it was posh unless they'd done the Elizabeth David thing (ratafia biscuits, marsala and syllabub I think, but am prepared to be corrected). In which case it would be posh and very uncommon.

Yeah I thought the kitchen roll anecdote wasn’t very sweet. And it goes to show ( as does this thread) that the whole businesss is really a bit pointless anyway because people clearly have totally different concepts of posh.

  • Kids in top-to-toe designer labels, especially if the brand name is emblazoned across it.
  • Dubai
  • Massive 4X4s when you don't even live rurally
  • Buying a ton of merchandise for every minor event, e.g. Valentine's Day gifts for each of your children, spending more on Easter baskets than most people spend on Christmas
  • Overconsumption in general

I have to have an SUV because I can’t bend due to spinal issues (It's not 4x4 though). I've had so many remarks like yours aimed directly at me, simply because my disability isn't visible and I'm under the age of 50....especially as it's brand new (it's a Motability car so it has to be brand new)
therefore I must have it as a status symbol, right?!

twodowntwotogo · 04/09/2024 20:23

In my experience - and I've had a lot - the 'poshest' people I've met (as in titled families who have hereditary wealth over multiple generations, i.e. pre-1850s) were obnoxious, papered over their wealth being derived from exploiting other people, were obsessed with who was related to who to a mind-boggling degree, held on to historic resentment about certain nationalities, were racist, anti-intellectual, anti-Catholic (or completely enthralled by it), tight with money, indulged their own eccentricities often at the expense of other people, and never used the given names of their staff - 'mrs thing' 'nanny' 'her' and so on. So - aspire away. And if your middle class insecurities make you so curtain-twitching that you are continually categorising other people, well that's just sad.

There’s quite a bit of truth in that summary of “ real” poshness.

I think true poshness looks very different from the general perceptions: not a Dubai holiday in sight ….

The one thing I would say is that calling nanny nanny is actually not seen as obnoxious but as a special gesture of being part of the family and it differed from the use of surnames for other staff. Servants were called by surnames for the simple reason that it helps to keep a sense of distance when living under the same roof. Most MNers today would prefer their DH to address the svelte, sexy lady’s maid as Brown not Eliza or Effie.

True but also no more 'obnoxious' than anyone else. Classing a whole swathe/ generations of people as ' obnoxious ' could get you cancelled, who else do you consider ' obnoxious ' 🤨

I read this as large inflatable family photos, for a minute. I thought “wow that does sound a little common” like my uni halls decor, circa 1998 😁

German cars - BMWs, Audis and Mercedes'. The roads are saturated with them. People think they're something special but seem completely unaware of just how common they are. I always assume people who buy them are sheep who have no imagination of their own.

They are all available on the Motability scheme as they (usually) have very large boots and are spacious and lovely to drive. They're also very well built. Those which are Motability vehicles have not been leased because of anything to do with image or lacking in imagination ffs.

My mum on the other hand just loves Audis and has been driving them for almost 60 years now. She couldn't give two hoots hat anyone thinks 🤣
