Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

That’s fine, fortunately I live somewhere where the streets are not covered in human excrement. I’ve never had anyone trail dog shit through the house either.

I think you’ll find whenever this is raised the majority of posters are the kind of people
to demand visitors remove their shoes. The MN position is in fact in favour of the common.

it’s not ‘common’ to ask people to remove shoes.

As mentioned, many cultures around the world do this.

PeachesForPeaches · 04/09/2024 11:24

If I lived in the countryside or a clean town then it would be different but the city I live in (not in the U.K.) is filthy. It’s not just poo - it’s urine, vomit, spit, bin juice. People automatically take their shoes off at the door, before I have to ask, and I do when I visit other peoples homes, especially if they have babies and children!

as a PP said, many cultures around the world take off their shoes before entering the home. It’s nothing to do with not being ‘posh’ 😂

Mumsnet seem to have such a reaction to this every time it is brought up. Weird.

On the flip side, I live in the countryside and we are insistent about shoes off as there are sheep here!

John Lewis
Afternoon tea
'Sourcing' anything
Designer dog breeds (e.g. cockapoo)
Glamping
Foreign holiday every year or more often
SUVs in town/city location
Island kitchens
Wearing sunglasses when talking (medical reasons excepted)
Garden 'offices' (i.e. sheds)
Hot tubs
Fire pits

Sorry the sunglasses thing has blown my mind. Are they only to be worn in silence?

Tabitha005 · 04/09/2024 12:46

Rolexes - especially 'his & her' versions
Ordering lobster and champagne in a restaurant - well overrated, imho
The Ivy (both the original restaurant and all its iterations)
Cruise holidays

Isn't it funny who well all see things differently, i see the things on your list as common and tacky. Maybe it is just my neck of the woods but it's the drug dealers and wannabes that drive Range rovers and holiday in Dubai. As for miller and carter, it's really just Nando's for beef.

Agree It does depend where you live. Before I moved I would have said Range Rover = dodgy money as how else would they afford one. Different where I am now, and there are loads of them. I had one behind me whilst pulling out of a car park, pulled out in between two of them and there was one coming towards me on the other side of the road. They love them here!

Bear Grylls is an absolute arsehole, this much I know.

A taxi driver who was also a scout leader told myself and a colleague that BG came to his scout group and despite eating everything in his shows recoiled when offered tripe by the troop. Now that may or may not be true......

I used to keep all my books. One day I gave them all to charity. Now I take a book out the library, read it and return it. If I do buy one (very rarely) then it’s in the charity shop once I’ve read it. I find I just don’t need books I’ve already read cluttering up my shelves or anywhere else.

They’re not displayed as trophies; they are resources. A good book should be something you want to dip into more than once.

All deaths are tragic for those who grieve. Mark the passing however you like, but you won’t convince me that horse drawn hearses are posh. That’s all.

Hmm yes, I don't think horses are used to signify a tragic death are they? Is there an animal hierarchy - what would a hearse drawn by a goat signify I wonder?

Rfthyhuj · 04/09/2024 12:53

In what world are driveways and carpets considered posh? They’re entirely run of the mill.

Autumnalove · 04/09/2024 12:59

Jellybeansweets · 04/09/2024 11:34

@Autumnalove not sure where you are but the one and only time I tried parkrun was the Hampstead Heath one.. my god did I feel out of place! Nearly all were posh yummy mummies in top to toe lululemon/sweaty Betty. Was a few years ago now to be fair but I was amazed how a free event was posh central

I've only brought the dc to the junior one.. I don't know about posh but some of the kids are like rockets running the 2k in 7 minutes (not mine🤣)

I think you missed an 's' and the point.

I did, sorry-just in the middle of work and hadn't read thoroughly enough. Have responded since.

Honestly Prosecco can be delicious - it’s just very hard to find the good stuff outside Italy. La Vigna de Sarah produces an amazing one - I was over on a work trip and it was a highlight.

It’s never as complex as really good champagne, I guess because it’s a simpler process, but it’s a different taste and goes better with some things.

Definitely! And I love prosecco (and champagne) but I have never, ever thought of it as 'posh'? Do people really think that? Is it that it is more 'posh' than a pint of lager and a packet of crisps ? But plenty of posh people enjoy lager/beer don't they?
How is prosecco thought of as 'posh'? It's just a sparkling wine, isn't it? Have I missed something?

Lexus, Infiniti, you can even buy a Maserati Ghibli for the price of a sheepmobile.

Have really enjoyed this thread and all the deliberate misunderstandings. Vair hilair. Even the earnest wailings have been quite amusing.

Parkrun?!!! Parkrun is free, junior parkrun is free. How can it be seen as posh, literally anyone can go if there's one locally!

There was a thread a couple of years ago about parkrun being middle class. It probably is, largely.

I don't think you can describe it as posh, though.

Wearing sunglasses as much as you can is a really good idea to avoid cataracts (or at least postpone their onset).

Maybe I used the wrong phrase fair enough but people on here do use it for those they feel are beneath them see also a bit council.

"a bit council" 🙈 this is the thread that keeps on giving!

That's the real Italian stuff, not the sugary crap sold in most of our UK supermarkets. A conversation I had in Florence with a horrified waiter concluded thus:

'They sell it in Marks and Spencer? Issssss NOOO Prosecco!'

Why would they assume that Italian prosecco can't be exported to the UK and sold in M&S? Much like their other wines. Or indeed, champagne or cremant.

Someone hasn’t read the memo on ‘fast’ fashion (or fast bedding).

You aren’t buying the right stuff if you can dispose of it in that manner.

Well Hampstead Heath is Poshville isn't it?

Is wearing Lulelemon posh though? Or just what affluent yummy mummies wear? Lululemon is expensive, but that doesn't mean it's posh.

Sweaty Betty definitely isn't posh. I think the name is quite downmarket. Ladies don't sweat, they glow!

What is this magical unicorn of a car that isn’t common then?
