Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Lexus, Infiniti, you can even buy a Maserati Ghibli for the price of a sheepmobile.

This was in reply to @Birdahoy .

it’s not ‘common’ to ask people to remove shoes.

As mentioned, many cultures around the world do this.

But those cultures have different ways of status signaling, e.g. skiing has a different status in Austria where ~35-40% of population goes skiing regularly than in the UK.

@Lwrenn BHS Christmas specials ( not posh)

Sorry I didn't see this! now, I was as a child desperate to go inside a BHS or a tammy girl.

I didn't because clothes in my house came from only the local market (I had some amazing outfits from there. I had magenta army pants I wore with a fake Tommy hillfiger crop top with white platforms)

But BHS seemed like harrods to me. I eventually went to one in the Trafford centre in my 20s and bought some lovely bedding and then it flipping closed down 😂

Sorry the sunglasses thing has blown my mind. Are they only to be worn in silence?

Removed when talking so you can maintain eye contact

"a bit council" 🙈 this is the thread that keeps on giving!

I've seen it used often on here. Not my opinion. I live on an estate and don't feel the need to pretend I'm something I'm not.

At Uni I shared a flat with someone who insisted on buying the world cheapest loo roll in the joint household shop. My bum likes the finer things in life so I had a secret stash of quilted loo roll for for myself.

I do not care if its not posh 😀

When I did a Uni exchange in Poland back in the day they had a BHS and it was consisted super posh.

I will have to google if it is still there as because sometimes just because it has gone out of business in UK it can still exist elsewhere.

I still love you C and A in Belgium and Holland.

Hmm yes, I don't think horses are used to signify a tragic death are they? Is there an animal hierarchy - what would a hearse drawn by a goat signify I wonder?

Goats definitely would not cooperate. A hearse drawn by oxen, or camels, would really impress.

ChanelBoucle · 04/09/2024 14:26

Mulberry bags since 2010.

Ah I’ve a lazy eye when tired so I like them to remain on when sunny. Now I’ve lost the point of the thread now. Is it that I think I’m posh leaving them on whereas really it’s common? Leaving aside the eye issue.

That is true although army regiments have goats don’t they as a mascot. Oxen are quite sombre animals though so I agree that’s a good shout.

(Light hearted) this relates to another recent thread that I won't replay here but TLDR is that there was a discussion about whether it was rude or not to take off sunglasses when initially meeting someone (not for the whole meeting, sorry).

afreshbouquetofpencils · 04/09/2024 14:54

This thread is brilliant and I’m only halfway through.

Lots already covered like Dubai and Designer logos.

Has anyone mentioned profiteroles on Christmas Day?

Also new clothes to wear on Christmas Day/Easter

Thebellofstclements · 04/09/2024 14:57

Rainbow1901 · 04/09/2024 09:16

Not necessarily - there are a few words developed from 'backronyms'!

Another one being legal jargon of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - I'm sure there are a few other kicking around. It's how languages develop over time.

"fuck" and other un/popular 4-letter words come from Anglo Saxon, they didn't start as legal acronyms 😂

My Mum was Icelandic and we always got new clothes for Christmas Eve otherwise the giant Christmas cat who eats children would gobble is up. 😂 my daughter always gets new clothes for Christmas Eve - can’t be too careful

friendlycat · 04/09/2024 15:19

I'm still giggling that anybody would think Miller & Carter is "posh".
But in the sense of fair play, I suppose if one frequents a Wetherspoons it may be deemed as such.

Honestly Prosecco can be delicious - it’s just very hard to find the good stuff outside Italy. La Vigna de Sarah produces an amazing one - I was over on a work trip and it was a highlight.

It’s never as complex as really good champagne, I guess because it’s a simpler process, but it’s a different taste and goes better with some things.

Ok! I think I have been scarred by thhe 'live, love, prosecco' posters!
I will try it again

We have this ice cream in Australia, called VIENETTA
Its log shaped, really really soft vanilla ice cream, with a base of crisp chocolate, layers of chocolate through it, then crisp chocolate drizzled over the top.
I grew up thinking it was very Posh. Special occasions only.
then, same when my children were young.
I have now introduced it to my grand children, and they are in awe.
It only costs about $8 a box. But I’m so happy it continues the tradition of being Posh.

AUD$8!! That must be posh - it was less than GBP£2 when I bought it for an ‘80s themed supper. Or should that be dinner..? Definitely not tea, anyway 😂

CherryVanillaPie · 04/09/2024 15:31

Classic FM, Gardeners World and Bake Off are lovely. If they're low class, I'm happy to be low class.

Yes sorry @Dymaxion you've missed the point. This thread isn't about the dreadful things we do. It's about having a good old laugh at the dreadfully common things dreadfully common people do.

I'm beginning to think not everyone on the thread is Our Sort.

Wearing sunglasses as much as you can is a really good idea to avoid cataracts (or at least postpone their onset).

Yeah but you do need to take them off when you’re saying hello (medical reasons accepted).

Yeah but class indicators are culturally based. In the UK it’s c**m.

A taxi driver who was also a scout leader told myself and a colleague that BG came to his scout group and despite eating everything in his shows recoiled when offered tripe by the troop. Now that may or may not be true......

Did he insist they rung out for a pizza after that?! That would indicate Tis true..
