Feel so ill I’m scared

Daffodils9 · 01/09/2024 18:18

Started Tues just gone. Can’t type much as so exhausted but frightened now. I’ve been seriously ill (hospital) twice before in my life and this feels like that but I can’t point to why exactly.
Fever, chills, intermittent muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, sore chest, breathlessness, cough, nausea and vomiting. Vomiting had stopped after the first couple of days but has come back today even though I’ve eaten virtually nothing for five days (handful of dry cereal, a cracker, etc.)
So completely exhausted and weak. Can’t sit up.

I’ve done three covid tests and they’re all negative. I’m vaxxed and boosted. The constant fever is worrying me - it comes down to 38/37.9 with paracetamol but never lower and never for more than half an hour so I am raging with it day and night.

I feel utterly desperate. We decided not to ring 111 today as I simply couldn’t cope with travelling an hour to our out of hours. We live rurally. I’m trying to make it to morning and hoping more local gp can see me.

Husband is worried and he doesn’t get worried by stuff like this usually. I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this. If flu how long before there is some respite? If not that then what? I am wondering about pneumonia or something?

Call 111. If you can make it till morning you can get to A&E if needed.

Spatchula · 01/09/2024 18:21

Call 999 and let them triage you.

Pigeonqueen · 01/09/2024 18:24

I’d be worried you have sepsis if you feel this unwell. Ring 111 urgently.

You're worried about sepsis and advise 111? 999 is more appropriate. They're perfectly capable of triaging people and can dispatch an ambulance faster than 111. If the op is so unwell she can't travel to an ooh GP 999 is 100% appropriate.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/09/2024 18:26

I would ring 111. It sounds like a nasty flu, and there isn't much they can do but it is an absolute fact that the moment I crack and seek medical advice, my symptoms start to improve. I hope the same may happen for you 🤞.

fuffymeloncauli · 01/09/2024 18:26

We decided not to ring 111 today as I simply couldn’t cope with travelling an hour to our out of hours then I would suggest you are ill enough to bed 111

FloatyBoaty · 01/09/2024 18:28

It could be flu or similar- but that feeling of fear you’re talking about is a red flag for sepsis.

I would ring 111 personally. I know you feel too ill to travel- but its BECAUSE you feel that ill, that you need to take this seriously.

Coconutter24 · 01/09/2024 18:29

Sounds like the flu or something similar. I’d personally give it a few more days to see how you get on

Cosycover · 01/09/2024 18:30

Please phone 111. I know the thought of travelling must be awful but you don't want to regret this if its serious.

ArizonaRobbinss · 01/09/2024 18:31

I don't want to scare you but this was me a year ago
I had life threatening sepsis

ArizonaRobbinss · 01/09/2024 18:31

Going to hospital saved my life

Mabelface · 01/09/2024 18:33

You need medical attention. With the vomiting and lack of food for so long, your potassium levels could be way too low and this can be problematic, besides making you feel terrible. You could also potentially be septic. Call 111, they'll triage you and send an ambulance if needed. Don't play down your symptoms with them.

DeCaray · 01/09/2024 18:35

Gastric flu which your body is succumbing to and my lead to pneumonia or sepsis?

Get yourself seen to promptly before you rapidly go downhill.

Spatchula · 01/09/2024 18:42

You're all concerned about sepsis so why are you encouraging the op to call 111 which can have wait times of over an hour. If you were genuinely worried about sepsis you would be advising 999, which is the advice the 111 website gives.

tattygrl · 01/09/2024 18:45

Call 999 OP.

The feeling of dread/doom can be related to sepsis.

You might not be septic, of course, but let's not take that risk. If 999 deem you not at risk, they'll triage you. Let them be the judges of that.

tattygrl · 01/09/2024 18:47

And as a PP said, don't downplay your symptoms to whomever you speak. Describe them as they are at their worst.

invisiblecat · 01/09/2024 18:49

I think 999 would be the best option too. You have chest pain and breathlessness, and they are key symptoms to treat as an emergency. If you're vomiting again you could be dehydrated as well. You're too ill to get out of bed, so they need to come to you.

cathcath2 · 01/09/2024 18:52

Do 111 online if nothing else.

SpanielPaws · 01/09/2024 18:58

I would try some oral rehydration sachets if you've got them, or make a drink with salt/sugar in (you can find the quantities online). Last time I had norovirus, I was just as you are describing and it lasted for about 6 days before I started to feel human again. Everything hurts because of the amount of vomiting.

PoopedAndScooped · 01/09/2024 19:04

What did 111 say?

I was ill afew years ago, partner rang 111
Afew back and fourths with different doctors, noone could decide if i needed an appoitment

I just wanted to sleep, In the End, Partner dragged me to the car and took me to hospital about 11pm

Hospital said if i had gone to sleep that night i would of died

111 rang me back at 5am , left a msg, saying they didnt think i needed an appoitment and to see a gp

Sounds like you need fluids and blood tests as a minimum. I would got to A&E

Genuine question, why sepsis? My ds (21) was like this and he said himself that he couldn’t stand it, that we might have to go to the hospital. He usually doesn’t complain when he is ill.

Newsenmum · 01/09/2024 19:13

If you’re so unwell you think you can’t go anywhere then you kind of need to go in.

Suma2021 · 01/09/2024 19:24

Hello, I would strongly suggest getting your partner/family member to take you to A&E and just get tests. I had very similar symptoms, and was so exhausted/weak I initially just stayed and tried to tough it out, until I eventually got a GP appointment, (not wanting to "make a fuss" and take myself to A&E) they sent me straight to A&E for suspected appendicitis but it turns out my appendix had actually perforated and I ended up having emergency surgery that same day.
Just go to A&E and get the tests. Better to know and reassure yourself if it just a horrendous bout of flu that will pass.
Hope you're ok and got the advice you need from the medical professionals.

Rory17384949 · 01/09/2024 19:34

A feeling of doom is a sign of sepsis , I think you should be seen asap, I know it's daunting but you should call 111

Hoppingblackbird · 01/09/2024 19:11

Genuine question, why sepsis? My ds (21) was like this and he said himself that he couldn’t stand it, that we might have to go to the hospital. He usually doesn’t complain when he is ill.

In my view, for these particular reasons:

Muscle and joint pain, breathlessness, fever, chills, physical weakness; the fact that these are persistent; and importantly, combined with the feeling of fear (OP hasn't used the word "doom" or like she's going to die, so I might be inaccurate in that, but I took note that she emphasises how scared she feels) which is characteristic of sepsis.
