Feel so ill I’m scared

Daffodils9 · 01/09/2024 18:18

Started Tues just gone. Can’t type much as so exhausted but frightened now. I’ve been seriously ill (hospital) twice before in my life and this feels like that but I can’t point to why exactly.
Fever, chills, intermittent muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, sore chest, breathlessness, cough, nausea and vomiting. Vomiting had stopped after the first couple of days but has come back today even though I’ve eaten virtually nothing for five days (handful of dry cereal, a cracker, etc.)
So completely exhausted and weak. Can’t sit up.

I’ve done three covid tests and they’re all negative. I’m vaxxed and boosted. The constant fever is worrying me - it comes down to 38/37.9 with paracetamol but never lower and never for more than half an hour so I am raging with it day and night.

I feel utterly desperate. We decided not to ring 111 today as I simply couldn’t cope with travelling an hour to our out of hours. We live rurally. I’m trying to make it to morning and hoping more local gp can see me.

Husband is worried and he doesn’t get worried by stuff like this usually. I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this. If flu how long before there is some respite? If not that then what? I am wondering about pneumonia or something?

Sorry to leave everyone hanging. After I posted I threw up and then slept for hours. Still not feeling any better I called 111. Spoke to doctor on the phone who said viral, wait it out.
I feel so ill it is unreal. Went to see the same doctor this morning in person who said the same thing and I burst into tears. Went over symptoms again because I was so distraught and he prescribed antibiotics but advised me to think carefully before filling the prescription as he doesn’t think they will be of any benefit.
So I’m back in bed praying for relief.
Thanks for all the concern. Not sepsis it seems but just the most f-ing awful virus of my life. When I asked why I feel so ill he said he thinks the fever is driving everything and that I can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together to get it down.

One really not one to advise taking antibiotics unnecessarily but if you're someone who has only had antibiotics a handful of times in your life I would just take them

OldieButBaddie · 02/09/2024 14:49

If you feel that bad, do go to A&E - I bet if they give you a proper test it will be Covid as it is rife right now, but it sounds like it might need further medical attention, especially if you are breathless. Do you have a pulse oximeter to keep an eye on your sats?

OfCourseItsMe · 02/09/2024 15:34

Oxygen at 96 isn't great though. When I was admitted, I was told if it went below 95 I would be given an oxygen tank.

96% is absolutely fine. The normal range is 95-100%.

creepedoutbyit · 02/09/2024 16:47

I thought it was oxygen levels late 80's that meant you should have oxygen mask?

We've just had a virus op and it was horrendous. D&V and felt like a massive hangover. Body aching, headaches, nausea and then a sore throat so I think it was probably Covid !

IOSTT · 02/09/2024 17:00

Why would a doctor prescribe antibiotics for a VIRAL infection? Antibiotics are for bacterial infections. So much ineptitude today in the NHS unfortunately. Also, as I said in an earlier post, anything containing paracetamol will MASK your high temp, which will then be disguising your symptoms. I would dial 999 and ask for an ambulance, let them triage you. If no luck, a&e. If no luck, Martha’s Law (your right to a second opinion from a different doctor)

95% oxygen saturation for an elderly person is normal

This is terrible advice. Despite having been taking paracetomal and ibuprofen prior to going to hospital when i had sepsis my temp was unmanageable. I was having rigors which were incredibly painful, I was convinced I was cold and trying to pile blankets on top of me when what I actually needed was stripped of those blankets and fans aimed at me. .

Nurses and docs are fully capable of understanding that a temp has been lowered because of paracetamol. Why suffer more than you need to?

Edited

Unfortunately, many patients have died from sepsis because their temperature has been lowered from taking paracetamol - they arrive at a&e in an ambulance, feeling generally very ill, temp taken, docs don’t know what to do with them, few hours later, patient dies from septic shock. Sepsis is one of the biggest killers in this country. Medics do not always get things correct. My DF died from septic shock because of an infection that was not acknowledged or treated.

IOSTT · 02/09/2024 17:17

Ps when I had my first covid vaccine I felt so ill I thought I was going to die - as others are experiencing this with covid, it sounds like the “impending doom” feeling could be related to covid as well as sepsis.

Please dont spread panic

95% oxygen saturation for an elderly person is normal

The OP's SpO2 of 96% is normal for a child, adult, elderly, or whatever.

It's only a worry if she has something like COPD in which case it would be too high.

PoopedAndScooped · 02/09/2024 17:38

That temperature. Mixed with your heart rate and how ill you feel i would honestly go to A&E for some blood tests

There is no way a doctor just looking at you can rule out sepsis

Daffodils9 · 02/09/2024 13:03

I didn’t see what blood pressure was. Temp was 39.1, heart rate 116 bpm, oxygen 96. Heart rate high because of the fever apparently.

My GP sent an ambulance for me for less. Please go to A&E

OfCourseItsMe · 02/09/2024 18:31

I didn't meant to spread panic! That's what I was told at the hospital.
To he fair when it dropped to 95 I felt terrible.

Really wishing you feel better soon op.

tattygrl · 02/09/2024 18:32

Adding to the PPs advising you to go to A&E, OP. Or call for an ambulance. I'm not assuming I know more than a GP, it just isn't worth the risk.

Rockschooldropout · 02/09/2024 19:02

im an ex nurse , I think you should go to A and E .
12 years ago I went to my gp after a cut on my finger caused my hand to balloon and went black , I felt so ill and had a sense that something terrible was happening , but I couldn’t put my finger (excuse the pun) on it … my temp was 40 , gp sent me away with antibiotics . 8 hours later I was rushed to hospital with life threatening sepsis and told if I’d gone to sleep I’d have died in my sleep , I had two surgeries to save my hand and spent a year having appointments and hand physio . My hand was permanently damaged and I have contracture in the finger going into my palm .. I only ended up in an and e because a friend begged me to call 111 , they sent an ambulance .

hellodolly1 · 02/09/2024 19:10

I second get to AE - I had similar HR & Temp recently during my illness . I'm an HCP too and didn't have a sense of impending doom but knew things would get much worse if I wasn't seen .
Are you keeping fluid down and passing urine ?

Apolloneuro · 02/09/2024 19:11

It’s not really flu season is it? I’d put money on it being Covid. I was like this three weeks ago. Tested myself and it was negative. Tested by hospital and I think you never do it to yourself quite as invasively. Positive. Feel shit, even still.

Perhaps you could test yourself again.

Lougle · 02/09/2024 19:17

@Daffodils9 I am concerned for a couple of reasons.

~The GP has not (presumably) done a urine dip, or a blood test. That means that if there is a bacterial infection, they don't know if the antibiotics are the right ones.

~'Viral' is not synonymous with 'minor'. Many viruses can be very serious.

~'keep it until it gets better' is only a good saying if it gets better. You are getting worse.

~You have a significant fever, high heart rate, and we have no idea about blood pressure.

I would not be waiting to see if you got better if you were in my house

Balloonhearts · 02/09/2024 19:18

More red flags than England bunting. You need to go to A&E, be sure that it's not sepsis.

Moriartea · 02/09/2024 20:15

When my Dad phoned 111 with a temp and heart rate like that, they sent an ambulance

He had the start of sepsis

I echo other PP's - go to A&E, you have nothing to lose

IAmTheSockThief · 02/09/2024 20:54

How are you feeling OP?

cannynotsay · 02/09/2024 21:45

Just got back from A&E with my kid she wasn't even that sick, I just need emergency care as she was given an antibiotic that wasn't working! That's what it's for, and now she's running around. Please get checked out better to be safe than sorry

Normallynumb · 03/09/2024 00:32

You're actually feeling worse not even slightly better, I think you do need to go to A&E.
You've not had a blood or urine test.

OfCourseItsMe · 04/09/2024 07:08

How are thing now op?
